  1. oliverweagle's first photo shows the serial numbers - 17S230 which makes these Walnut lacquer Cornwalls (C-WL) 1978 vintage. Very nice looking Cornwalls!
  2. I have used Terry Dewick to service some of my Mac Gear, he is indeed very knowledgeable and very reasonably priced. He does good work and does it quickly. I have no experience with the guys at www.artsrestoration.com but it sure looks like that would be a good place to go at least for cosmetic work. Thanks for the link, it may just come in handy!
  3. Welcome to the forum scottielover! This thread may be the thread to which Frzninvt is referring.
  4. When I said: "My current tube amps are able to drive my Klipschorns above 90dB and sound pleasant to me (and to everyone else who has heard them)." I should have said my current 2A3 amps, my Moondogs sounded great also. I would have loved to be able to keep both sets of SETs but I just don't have that kind of dough.
  5. Hi Trader, FWIW, I have tried many tube amps and a few SS amps with my Klipsch speakers. Of the tube amps, one of my favorites is the 6BQ5, I've owned 2 6BQ5 based amps, one single ended and one push pull. I also really like the KT66 type tube, I have a pair of KT66 monoblock amps that I have been listening to for the last few weeks, they are my newest amps and I am currently on the lookout for a quad of 350B tubes to try in the amps as they are supposed to be excellent. My favorite tube is the 2A3 though, I have had two different designs of 2A3 SET monoblocks and they are my favorite. I would love to hear a pair of 2A3 PP amps also, but I'll always own a pair of 2A3 SET amps. As always, YMMV, but these are my favorites at this point in time.

It sounds horrible that way and would make anyone want to leave the room. But it's not because of the volume level, it's the distortion level. Playing something 90dB on Klipschorns sounds pleasant. ---------------- "Playing something 90dB on Klipschorns sounds pleasant" is another opinion. I have had tube amps driving my K-horns that did not sound pleasant (to me) at 90dB. My current tube amps are able to drive my Klipschorns above 90dB and sound pleasant to me (and to everyone else who has heard them). YMMV of course.

Then, if you try to listen at a decent volume, not extremely loud by any means, just decent, you'll be into compression and clipping. ---------------- Decent volume, extremely loud (or not) are entirely subjective...IOW a matter of opinion. My wife often asks me to turn the music down because it is too loud, this is in her opinion of course, not mine!
  8. 3dzapper, what was the issue preventing you connecting here?
  9. I don't understand either, Mike. I probably shouldn't have posted what I did, but all of a sudden Erik can't connect to this site. I really hope Erik can't log on here for some other reason, IMHO he was a valued contributor and definitely not here to exploit the forum members, as some have intimated.
  10. Erik seems to be a casualty of Klipsch sifting out the 'chaff' from the other posters at the forum. Erik can't seem to log into the BB anymore. I'm guessing it was his cavalier attitude toward helping others by trying to line his pockets...by doing stuff for forum friends for free. Or maybe it is because I actually offered to pay him for repair work that he has done for me. I did pass on your comments to Erik, Leo, and is happy that you are confirming what he has heard in his amps.

I also think there will be at least two more people who switch from hi-pow to lo-pow amps. Everyone's situation is different. Each should be able to determine for themselves what they like best in their system without ruling out a topology simply because someone else tells them it won't work. For some reason, some folks actually like both! Imagine that!
  12. I am not trying to intimate that you are, 3dzapper. I'm just bowing out of the 'competition' voluntarily...I'd rather not be considered.
  13. Sorry I'll try to be more specific: ---------------- On 7/22/2004 6:09:51 PM paulparrot wrote: What kind of whim would be satisfied by playing something through an underpowered and distortion-laden amp? 15. I would like to withdraw my request and rationale for acquiring the AVVTs. I will gladly pass the timing of my PM (especially if I was first) to 3dzapper.
  16. I have to agree with Dean, try out as much gear as you can. Buying used allowed me to sample many different amp topologies and I was always able to resell the amps that didn't float my boat without losing much money (if any). I tried SET last because I just couldn't believe 3.5 watts could be anywhere near enough power. Also, now that I have my settled on the SET amps I like best, I am back auditioning higher power again too (if 30wpc could be considered high power) for a second system.
  17. Heres my Meltons story, sorry it is so long: When I first moved to Atlanta Meltons was recommended to me as a stereo shop where I could get some equipment to set up a small home theater. My wife wanted Bose speakers (bless her heart) and Meltons carried them. We got our little HT setup and pretty much forgot about Meltons. Many years later, spring of 2001, I was driving down Jimmy Carter Blvd. and noticed that Meltons had moved their store location. I went in and while looking around I discovered that they carried Klipsch speakers! Kewl! I had an all Klipsch HT by that time (finally talked some sense into my lovely wife) and I also had my 2 channel rig in the basement. At that time I had Cornwalls and Belles and I really wanted a pair of K-horns. Meltons had all the reference speakers and a pair of Heresys. I knew the other Heritage were coming back into production at that time and asked the owner if he was getting any in. He stated that he had ordered 1 pair of every Heritage speakers coming back into production from the new K-horns to the new Cornwalls. I mentioned hat I didnt believe the Cornwall was coming back into production but he assured me it was (I argued with him for a bit but he insisted his Klipsch salesman had said it so it was true). I told him I would be back to check out the K-horns when he got them in. I went back later that summer but no new Heritage. The first sales person I spoke to that visit said they didnt carry Klipsch, but I took him to the room where they were located, a separate room that was mostly set up to demo HT stuff. I did know Klipsch was behind in production at that time so I said Id be back. I went back again about a year later, (this was the summer of 2002, I had purchased my 78 K-horns about that time), to see what Heritage he had in stock. He still only had a pair of Heresys. Mr. Melton explained to me that the Heritage speakers were not back into production yet. I told him they were, and that I knew some folks who had received shipment of them. He didnt believe me. I went back again last summer but was informed that the Heritage line was being phased out and Mr. Meltons Heritage order had been cancelled by Klipsch LLC.
  18. Hi redtop, I have a pair of Heresys you could come over to listen to. I won't be able to do it for a couple of weeks, but send me a PM or an email through the BB and we can set something up. There is a dealer in Atlanta, Melton's Pro Sound on Jimmy Carter Blvd., that did carry some Klipsch Heritage speakers. I haven't been in their shop in a couple of years, but they had a pair of Heresys in stock last time I was there. The owner is a blowhard IMHO, but that is another story.

I know allot of Dynaco PAS preamps go up for sale quite often BUT 1. Many were made over many years 2. Phono section is lifeless What are the reasons some of these are sold off at an obvious loss of serious cash? ---------------- I think my Moondogs were the best sounding amps that I have had in my system. I used them on both Belles and later with K-horns. When I say the Moondogs were best sounding, I am not claiming they could drive my speakers louder than any of the other amps I tried, but that they sound the best to me in my room (now I think the Horus are better). I have tried quite a few higher and lower powered amps, both tube and SS. There are a few other amps that I had in my system I would still like to own, all higher powered than 2A3s, but I simply can't afford that much gear (especially when it would be laying around unused most of the time). I sold my Moondogs to upgrade to JF Lessard Horus monoblocks. I wish I could have kept the Moondogs also, but I simply couldn't afford both. I did not lose 'serious cash' when I sold them, in fact I sold them for about what I paid for them (the benefit of buying used). Actually, I don't agree with the premise of this thread - I don't think that Moondogs and Wrights come up for sale all that frequently. I waited over 6 months for a pair of either to come up for sale before I bought my Moondogs.
  20. Hi Tony, I wasn't trying to find fault with what you posted, just that it is natural to comment positively on your current product. Ron did a bang up job with the 'old' kits and I am sure he worked hard to improve on them with his new product. IMHO the Moondogs especially achieved a kind of 'cult' status. I'm sure Ron's intention is to improve on his former product and from what many have said he has done that. I would love to audition a pair of the DRD 2A3 monoblocks in my system to compare them with my JF Lessard Horus monoblocks!

The DRDs have a little more resolution and dimensionality than the Moondogs. More top end extension too. Ron" another comment from his web site rE: drd vs laurels: "DRD 300B versus the Laurels: This is tough one, because the Laurels are very nice sounding 300Bs, but based upon my listening experiences I'd have to give the nod to the DRDs. And I do this for two reasons. For one; the Laurels and DRDs are really very similar sounding designs but the DRD 300Bs have a little bit better detail and more dimensionality. Secondly; the DRD design equals or beats the Laurels in sonics and does it for about two thirds of the cost" regards, tony ---------------- I'd be very surprised to hear Ron not say the DRDs are better than the models they replaced...he would be shooting himself in the foot if he did!
  22. I have to agree that I wouldn't ship my "good stuff" around the country for others to sample, but several forum members have come here to have a listen. I did ship a spare amp (Monarchy SM-70) to several forum members to see what a 25wpc SS class A amp could do in their system. Of course the Monarchy is very durable, basically one big piece of metal and not easily damaged in shipping.
  23. You will have to type the closing } in the url above to get the page to load. For some reason the BB always leaves the closing } off. Or you can click here to go to that thread.
  24. You should have seen the auctions for Quintets ~3-4 years ago.
