Jay Registrar
I am looking at a pair of Industrial Herseys (They have built in handles)? At any rate, the owner says he was using as PA speakers, but now when he turns the volume up the speakers "crackle". I have not seen or heard yet, so I am asking for help from my fellow forum members before I make a trip to see. What might be the problem? What kind of things should I do to test when there? Etc., etc., etc. In addition, what might they be worth? Thank you in advance for your help!
billybob
Wonder if both cabs/speakers sets crackling.
Jay Registrar
I don't know, but I'm wondering if he didn't over power (too much volume), and damage the woofers. To me, they don't require a great deal of volume. I forgot whether that means they are high or low efficiency, but the herseys I had, and the Cornwalls I got sound good at low volume. Daddy Dee
I'd think the most likely thing would be damaged woofers, scraping voice coil or something. With the tweeter and the squawker, if those diaphragms fail, they'd just quit. Don't think they'd be making any sound at all.
colterphoto1
Clipping amp usually takes out tweeter first, but crackling sound could be midrange or woofer. Best to block the output of each and give a listen. Stuff towel in the horns one at a time, put big magazine over the woofer. Block each driver and listen to the others. Pushing in gently on the woofer cone (NOT the central dome) will usually result in a crunchy or scraping sound if the woofer is toasty.
