What are the main differences between these two DVD Players? What makes the DVP-S9000ES worth twice the price of the DVP-NS900?

I think that the 9000 is an older model and will be replaced soon. My read is that it is not worth the extra although it may have more "audiophile" components in it than the 900.

I am fairly sure that the 900 has a more advanced video DAC than the 9000 (54 Mhz as opposed to 27).

Unless you get a serious discount on the 9000 I would avoid it.

But the European version of the DVP-NS900 does not have progressive scan.

Kain,

True, the European version does not have progressive scan, but it is a lot less expensive than the US version.

The question is, do you need progressive scan? Remember it only works with NTSC (region 1) DVD's and as far as I understand, only really makes a difference on large screens.

Certainly the NS900 (European Version) produces the best picture I have seen to date on my 32 inch Sony TV.

Yes, I will have a very large screen. I will be using the Sony VPL-VW11HT LCD projector on a 80-90 inch 16:9 screen.

But I heard that you do not need a progressive scan capable DVD player with the Sony VPL-VW11HT as its own deinterlacing is better the DVP-S9000ES's. They say that the picture is better when running the S9000ES in interlace mode rather than progressive mode.

According to Sony's ES brochure, the differences are these:

The 900 plays CD-R/CD-RW, has multi-channel SACD output, Dolby 5.1 decoder on-board, adaptive 480p output, dual laser pick-ups, a better D/A, different construction and an optical digital out for CD. These are all features not found on the 9000. The 900 is the better machine.

Secondly, I don't even need progressive scan because my Sony VPL-VW11HT LCD projector does a better job of deinterlacing than the Sony DVP-S9000ES and mostly all other progressive scan DVD players. All reviewers said that the picture was better when running the DVP-S9000ES in interlace mode rather than progressive mode, and this is for all other progressive scan DVD players too. They said that the VPL-VW11HT does a better job of deinterlacing than all top-of-the-line progressive scan DVD players. Smile.gif

Jim and others- I beg to differ. The 900 has more features (CD/CDRW, multichannel SACD) but if you compare the video quality, there is no contest. the 9000es is far better. the video quality of the 900 is as good and your everyday $299 progressive scan players. the 9000es is the reference...

Ditto,

dearlv is right. While the 900 offers more formats, the video is better on the 9000ES. I spoke to a number of Sony tech support guy's on several different occasions prior to my 9000ES purchase and they said the same thing.

I am always very concerned when manufacturers scale down units in weight from in this instance 28Lbs to about 11Lbs (900), some stuff must have been taken out. Most of this I am sure is the copper isolation they use in the chassis design. The 9000ES has the ability to shutdown audio and video circuits to improve the quality of what you are viewing and listening to.
