Toshbia 9200 vs. a "True" CD player

I currently have a Toshiba 9200 it does sound nice but I keep reading that you can't get good CD playback from a DVD player. Is that true? What are some "Good" CD players in the 1,000.00 range?

Thanks for the input,

Jeff

What are you reading!! Check this out.

Noticed immediate improvement over my Denon DCM-370. With feature such as DVD-Audio, HDCD, and 24/192, you cannot beat this unit. And its built like a bricksh*t house.

Bought mine at

dynadirect

Got great service, a nice change.

Those reviews sound really good.

I will check into one for myself. My wife says we should get into the hi def video thing in the next few months with a progressive scan dvd player. I have a 2 year old Sony I would use as a CD player in the bedroom in the future.

"Sensible Sound" generally perceives CD players as equivilant. I cannnot see spending alot of money on exotic transports; if you have a good DVD player.

You could pick up a MSB Link DAC used for $ 250 perhaps to try something for a tweak. I cannot contemplate ever getting rid of mine.

Rob,

I love my Toshiba 9200 it's a great DVD player and sounds very good on CD's. I looking at the next level up in sound. Isn't that what will do? The quest to get just a little better sound? So don't be upset. I don't like the fact that you can't get anything over 16/48k through the bitstream.

Anyway I'm glad your happy with the 9200 I'm with you that it is a great DVD/cd player. Take a look at this review...

Jeff, here's the audio spec(s)(from Toshiba):

- 24-Bit 192kHz PCM Audio Compatibility

- DVD-Audio Decoding and Playback via 6 Channel Analog Outputs

- HDCD® Precision Filtering and Decoding

- Built-In Dolby® Digital Decoding with 5.1 Channel Analog Outputs

- 3-D Digital Noise Reduction

- Optical Digital Audio Output

- Direct Audio Mode

The player has multi-output settings which the user can select: a) Bitstream B) PCM c)2-channel analog d)6-channel analog.

How is this player limited to 16/48 "bitstream" when the specs list 24-Bit 192kHz PCM Audio Compatibility?

How is the bitsteam lower? Why the difference from PCM?

Any ways, if I had the bucks, I'd own kick arse CDP like Anthem CD-1 as well as the Toshiba. Read the reviews man - WOW!!! Definitely high-end reference gear.

Rob,

Thanks for the specs. I find this subject some what confusing. Look on page 43 at the table of audio conversions. "DVD Video" through the bitstream will only output a digital stream at 16 bit/48khz. You are correct that using the analog out both 2 channel and 6 channel you can decode 24 bit up to 96 kHz. You can decode DVD Audio discs at 24/196kHz. The HDCD is not transmitted through the bit stream at all. It's kind of a strange arrangement.

Even with all these oddities, I'm with you, it is a very impressive unit. By the way I can't afford a CD-1 either. Wish I could.

Have a nice night,

Jeff

Mobile,

I know I have taken a dark path.

I have been having thoughts I should go all analog in the living room.

LaScalas

SET

Rega Planar 25 with Grado Gold cartrige

VPI record cleaner

The record cleaner may put my wife over the edge. I have become very comfortable with her in the past 19 years, I do not want to push her too far. She kinda likes those little shiny disks.

It will not be easy coming back to the Light.

I read Sensible Sound(SS) primarily for the music reviews.

I also read The Absolute Sound primarily for the music reviews.

They are on opposite sides of the "Twilight Zone".

And I am not sure Listener and Stereophile are in the middle either.

SS reviews a $79 CD player; my buddie has a Linn CD player. It is darn near tricycles versus Ferraris.

System tweaking and the associated educational process will take a lifetime.

This is the best darn indoor hobby next to nooky!
