  1. Henry, Im so glad you like the unit. I am amazed at the quality and sound of the vintage gear. There is warmth to old Fisher, Scott , and Mac gear that is unlike anything I hear today - maybe its becaude my ears are 50 years old, or maybe it because its the gear that I wanted when I couldnt afford it- who knows! I still have a fisher 400 exactly like the one I sold you that i use in the bedroom. I rotate it with a NOSVALVES 299a. I run them through a pair of warfedale w-70s with a thorens TD165 . A very cool sounding and looking vintage system. Exactly like i would have bought if I could have afforded it it back in the day. josh
  2. The project is a nice tt as is the MM. But take your time. I think that the resurgance of vinyl means that the prices will come down! In the mean time you are more than welcome to use the DUAL until your B - day. Really its just sitting on my workbench, I would be happy to have you use it for as long as you would like. Josh
  3. Thats fine with me. Give it a go and if you upgrade send it back no worries. Josh
  4. Hey T, Before you spend dough on a fancy tt you should find out if you really are going to go throught the hassle (fun) of dealing with vinyl. Ill send you, free, a very nice DUAL 1009 with a sure m55e cartridge, with a brand new stylus. say the word and Ill ship it off. If your not familiar with DUAL, they were a fine maker of turntables back in the day. Im sure many of the older forum members remember, at the age of 13 lusting after a DUAL 1009! Just email or private message me with your address etc and Ill send it off. Then you can go look for a 200 or Eicho! happy New Year josh
  5. Lets see.. If Chris can count the release of Blood on the Tracks as a new release than I can add the SACD releases of Blonde on Blonde, Planet Waves ( an underappreciated great album), Nashville Skyline, and the rest of the Dylan catalogue that has been released on SACD. A great job on all of them. You cant beat the performance and the sound and the mixes on SACD are top notch. I will also include the new Mellencamp CD. Although I am very disappointed that he recorded this with old mics on 8 track reel to reel, did numerous interviews stating that after going back to this old gear.. I cant believe we have forgotten how much better this stuff sounds! and still the recording is not on vinyl or SACD (to my knowledge) Additionally Gram Parsons Another Side of this Life ( LP) The lost recordings from 1965 to 1966 - Sundazed records. Just the original county rocker by himself with an acoustic guitar. Very poignant very very good. Its not new but the record is! Dusty Springfield Dusty in Memphis (LP) (4 Men with Beards records) another reissue that counts as a new record. You want to get laid put this on. Enough said. Maria Muldaur Richland Woman Blues (LP) stoney plain records. Great LP Great acoustic picking from some of the best playing blues from the 20s and 30s Rosanne Cash Rules of Travel (CD) Great Great release from one of our most underrated performers. Its good to have her back after years of voice problems. Listen to the duet with her late father, September When it comes, knowing that he died in September. Very moving. Nina Simone Little Girl Blue. ( LP) Re Release on Get Back records. Another cheater because it was originally recorded in 1958 but the reissue is a wonderful sounding pressing of a wonderful performance. Im sure Ill think of more and hopefully theyll actually be new recordings so they could truly qualify as best of 2003!!! josh
  6. Those look sweet!! I bet they sound sweet too! Good Job. josh
  7. I received a somewhat belated Christmas present today. Annie Leibovitz's book of photos called "American Music" It truly is a wonderful page-turner. Two hundred and some odd pages of photos of the best in American roots music. Mostly personalities from Delta Blues, Country, and Bluegrass but it also include a number of what I would call roots jazz artists as well. Examples include George Jones, Duane Eddy, Lucinda Williams, Irma Thomas, Etta James, and Anita O'Day. A real cornucopia of spectacular, only in America, personalities. The cover is a great shot of a Dual 1225 spinning a Monument Recording Studios test pressing of "The Stamps" It also includes essays from a range of artists including Patti Smith, Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash. Very very Cool. The only thing that has me puzzled is how the Dixie Chicks made it in the book! Check it Out josh
  8. The Cayin that looks intreging to me is the TA 30 integrated. It can apparently be used as a push pull or a SET see http://www.cayinusa.com/ I would get it from Bizzy Bee audio as he offers a auricap upgrade as well as some other stuff. The ability to run as a 4 watt SET or a 30 watt PP should appeal to a lot of folks on the forum that way they can argue with themselves!!! Josh

The Garrott seems to like it more than the MM section of the Holfi (my regular phono stage which is an excellent match for the Rohmann (MC)). So if you are interested in combining a great tuner, phono section and preamp in one chassis, follow Allan's advice(!)........ and Merry Christmas to everybody . Wolfram thanks Wolfram, After living with the MC225 for just a day ( alright I played music until 230am last night and virtually all day today. The Beach boys Christmas Lp is blasting away as I type) I am virtually sure that i will be selling my Cary equipment. So looking for a C-22 is not completely out of the question. One of the benefits of getting the MX-110 is that I can still think abouut upgrading at some point! josh ----------------
  10. Thanks for all the notes. I paid 950 for it. Probably could have gone lower but 950 is a great buy. Yes its true what everyone says about Macs and Klipsch a very nice ( at least to my ears and in my room with my music so far) combo indeed. I look forward to tube rolling once I get used to the sound as it is now. I would love some preamp input. I see a lot of the MX110s in systems. How does it compare with other Mac tube preamps. I would be interested in you perspectives. Happy Christmas Josh
  11. Here is my new Mac. It looks even better in person! I dont want to tell what I paid! suffice it to say it was a good deal. Anyway its warming up. Ill get back to you with some listening notes!!! Josh

  13. Another shot as picture. I m not sure how to upload more than 1. j
  14. Here is a photo of the Unit. The tubes in the front end as well as the Multiplex are all telefunken 12ax7s either branded as such or as Fishers made in West Germany. The outputs are Fisher made in US - I dont know who made the Fisher tubes in the US. The unit is perfect in every way and the only reason I am selling is because I hve two of these. And having just aquired a MC225 I am bit oversocked at the moment! Any questions let me know.
  15. So far the knobs take the cake. I didnt think that anything could top speaker wire stands but I now satnd corrected. "A fool and his money are soon parted" remains a trueism in the world of audio!!! Josh

But I thought that spending more than 50 bucks was a joke until i heard some home brew from a local stereo store. I am now convinced that the interconnects make a huge if not paramount difference. Until I hear something i will not ;laugh!!! josh
  17. Yes it does. Not only does it have a very fine phono stage, it is also a great reciever, with a radio shack antinae it picks up more stations and hold em than just about any tuner I have tried. If you want you can try it and if you dont like it return it and all you are out is shipping. It really is a fine unit . Ill post pics tomoorow, Josh
  18. Thanks Dave and Allan, I am going to get it. Should be hooked up on tuesday!. Dave - Ill email you before I come to town- probably after the the new year and we can explore vintage vinyl or have a bud or three. Allan thanks for your thoughts - now get Chris excited about vinage Mac!!!!. josh
  19. thanks for the advice. Actually the unit has just been retubed, Input tubes are all NOS RCA and the out outs are brand Audio Harmonics. anout 200 bucks worth of tubes s I think Im in good shape. BTW where are you in St L. I get there about once a month. GREAT town!!! I love it there. I have an office in soulard near the brewery but get around the town a fair bit. Vintage Vinyl on the loop has a great deal of my money!!! Josh
  20. I am about to pull the trigger on a MC225. It is in absolute perfect-almost showroom condition. I think I will be able to get it for 900 to 1000.00 - from a very reliable local - no shipping sourse. My question is .. Is this a "good " example of Mcintosh tube equipment. I know that I will be able to re coup my purchase price but Id rather not go throught the hassle if its just considered "OK: Mac stuff. josh
  21. Hello all, In the tradition of offering items for sale here first. I have a perfect fisher 400 for sale. It includes the walnut case (in perfect condition) as well as copies of the service manual and owners manual. This receiver is a perfect example of the great Fisher tube equipment (even if it does look like a radio to quote Craig!) I happen to have two of these so I am selling one much to my chagrin. The chassis is spectacular no pitting no rust its dead on perfect. This unit has been gone through and the caps have been replaced and upgraded with the basic Vacuum tube Valley rebuild kit. I am asking 500 bucks. again including the case. Let me know as Ill put it on eBay in a week or so. As soon as my cameras battery recharges Ill take a few shots and post em. And also let you know what the tube set is. Thanks josh

It would be like getting a free upgrade more or less. I would NEVER pay the price for the real upgrades for VPI. BEsides, the new Scout is probably an even better buy when you think about it. STill, if I had a Jr and I wanted an upgrade, I would buy that Mk III and sell my Jr. for almost the same amount. That is lower than most Mk III sell for which is why I listed it. On the other hand, I lived around a VPI HW-19 Jr. for three years and they arent that bad. But the Mk III platter and the arm board are a big upgrade. The Linn LP-12 has more life to it.... but the VPI Jr. sounded at least "good" all the time. The Linn could sometimes sound terribly wrong or at least pedestrian. But when good, it sounded more real and involving than the VPI. But I consider that Mk III a great deal. You could sell if again for the same amount. The tonearm is the weakest part...but still ok. That Incognito Rega is DAMN GOOD. And can handle MC cartridges. That AR ES-1 is a good deal too. That Incognito Rega is more than the table! kh ---------------- I was thinking the exact same thing, so I bought the Mk lll, I will install my Audioquest arm and sell my 19 jr with the Sumiko arm. All in all I am getting the upgrades for less than a hundred bucks. Josh
  23. The other benefit of the VPI is that there are upgrades easily ( not cheaply) available. I have the HW19 jr which i am debating in my mind if I should spend the dough o upgrade to the mark 3. At 750 the VPI that Kelly pointed you to is a pretty good buy. When you consider the cost of the parts to make a 19 jr into a Mark 3 is $690.00 josh
