  1. My rear surrounds, which suck and need to go, also produce audible "popping". It seems to almost always occur as the receiver is chaning sound modes. For example when I pop a DVD in and all the intro nonsense is playing they will pop, then when the movie starts and the receiver switches to digital, they pop again. Are they on their way out? I have them set to "large" for the receiver, with a crossover of 80hz. Should I set them to "small"/100hz and see if that helps? Any other ideas?
  2. My surrounds are crappy bookshelf speakers, bought at Best Buy 10 years ago. My previous receiver, a Sony Pro-Logic bought at the same time, did not produce much noise in the rear surrounds. (To be fair, it didn't produce much real sound either) My HK 325 produces audible noise in the rears. See my sig for all my gear. I'm guessing some noise is unavoidable. I'm also guessing that a distance of two feet, at exact ear level, is a little close for speakers so the noise is more audible than it should be? Anyone have thoughts on my noise issue?
  3. Don't forget about the Dolby Digital 5.1 in Doom3. Will HL3 have that?
  4. As far as your Yamaha versus HK question: I listened to HK, Yamaha, and Denon. Denon and Yamaha are a little bit bright with Klipsch speakers in my opinion, and I have seen others on the forum express the same concerns. Yamaha is not quite as bright as Denon depending on what room you are listening in. Thats why I went with the HK,it is just right for my taste. Go listen to these systems if you can, and bring some demo material with piercing "highs" with you.
  5. In the up to $800 range you can get the Denon AVR2803 or the Harman Kardon AVR 325, both of which are pretty awesome receivers. What surround format are you using with speakers in the ceiling?
  6. Make sure you get something that will fit in your ceiling, in between floor tresses and all.
  7. I belive it was only myself and j-m from the forums. There are quite a few other people in SE Wisconsin but many (all) of them didn't show up.
  8. jzoz01 have you seen these? Does the sound actually work? Digital sound?

    DD vs. DTS

Why DTS (sorry didn't search) ? The main advantage I've heard is the lack of compression, but I read recently that that technology is only in their theater system.
  10. Like I said, once you go back in time more than once it gets way too comlicated. Every movie with time travel in it except maybe the Back to the Future series has arguments like this
  11. I didn't realize they still made K-horns. I thought you said something along those lines last night John? I have no room so its RF-5s for now. When I get the next house though...
  12. I was hoping he'd see this thread and chime in with his gear. He has 3 or more McIntosh amplifiers, two SVS Ultra + subwoofers, lexicon preproccessor, more than I remember. I didn't take pics, its not my stuff
  13. SE Wisconsin people who didn't come really missed out. His room setup, the speakers and gear are just awesome. Now I have the upgrade bug again already. The problem is do they even make anything these days that compares with the Klipschhorns? I don't even know if RF-7s would get close to a sound this BIG. If I had the room, I'd want the horns.
  14. Go listen to them and see. For me, the RF-5s were "enough." You barely gain any bass benefit by going up to the RF-7 but some people say they have a much different sound than the 5s. YMMV, go audition them with a recording you're very familiar with.
  15. I am eagerly awaiting Doom 3. I grew up playing the original wolfenstein and doom games and this game is a big deal to me. The nostalgia alone will be worth it, but as a long time graphics geek I just cannot wait to see what this game looks like. This engine moves us a lot closer to real time rendering that is as real as "Finding Nemo". I like Gothic/Horror stuff as well and this game is just going to be a better environment for me than Half Life 2. That said, I feel _most people will like HL2 better.
  16. Does anyone know anything about this? My Google searches turn up a lot of nonsense.
  17. I thought it was somewhat cheesy. There were a lot of corny one liners from Arnold. However, I didn't go into the film expecting much so I enjoyed it. I will say the whole concept is getting tired. How many times can you keep going back in time? I don't remember the sound being anything special, it was not in THX or DTS as far as I remember.
  18. For music I like my favorite Opera on DVD, Mozarts "Die Zauberflote" conducted by James Levine... But then again watching DVD Opeara on a HT system isn't a popular pasttime from what I can tell so YMMV
  19. I have heard a B&W Nautilus home theater owned by a person who calibrates MarcusTheaters for a living. They sounded good but I just prefer to Klipsch sound. Speaker people often aren't 100% objective, we like what we like.
  20. Many, many thanks. I do have some college physics background and can handle math. My research kick started when I was looking at the relationship between high power amps versus high volatage amps, speaker impedence, etc.
  21. Hello! Being the tech junkie that I am I've been looking for a good book on all the physics involved in reproducing sound. I'm talking both soundwave/reflection stuff as well as the electrostatics of speakers and receivers and whatnot. I spent some quality time with Amazon.com and didn't find anything. Can anyone recommend a good title?
  22. If you enjoy cynical and sarcastic humor, as I do, check out "Mr. Cranky" movie reviews. He tears everything up in very thoughtful ways: http://www.mrcranky.com/thisweek.html
  23. Well, I don't know if you're looking for better than Monster Cable, but I think they make a wire that is supposedly meant for in-wall applications. I couldn't find it on their site but I swear I've seen it at local retailers.
  24. I've read such awesome reviews of the RC-7, I never considered getting another RF-5 for the center. I'm wondering if I will have issues buying a single speaker? I will probably change the Amp. After looking at the total price tag, another several hundred bucks over the Outlaw isn't going to kill me.
  25. I've heard a RX-35 setup. I did't feel the floorstanding speakers were able to reproduce bass very well, they distorted at high volumes. If you're getting that setup be sure to get a sub. Mids and highs sounded good, they sound like Klipsch speakers.
