  1. Saturday audio exchange has a handful of speakers for sale. KSP 300 KSF S5 KSF C5 KG 1.2 Cornwalls www.saturdayaudio.com
  2. Keep in mind that the power that enters your home has been reduced from a much higher voltage that was used to transmit that power over long distances of cable. This makes it possible that the last few feet of cable to your equipment may very well make a difference. I converted my entire house to vintage cotton wrapped cable suspended on wall mounted spools. I sourced the cable from old condemned houses in the area. I don't think there is a piece of wire in the house that isn't at least 65 years old. If you try this yourself make sure you don't use wire from the World War II era which is aluminum and try to find glass spools they work better than porcelian. The sound system sounds great.
  3. How much power do you need? Do you need a phono input? Which means more to your project, appearance or performance? Can you build from scratch with just a chassis box, do you have the necessary tools? Finally, I assume you intend to use the equipment after it's graded, what music do you prefer?
  4. Dave, I really think a few people at the Scott forum received part of a bad batch because I have never had a problem with the Sovtek 7199. I also think back when these Russian companies were breaking into the open market there quality control was pretty bad and has improved a ton since. The Sovtek 5AR4 has proven this to me. Craig ---------------- Craig, Excellent point about the quality control coming around from the Russian manufacturers. About 6 years ago I put a Sovtek 5AR4 in my 299 and the thing started arcing within a week. Thinking it was just a bad sample I installed another that didn't last 5 days. I plunked down the big money for a Mullard that is still in service to this day with at least 5000 hours on it. When I finally bought the Welborne Labs Laurels I had always dreamed of a couple of months ago they came with Sovtek 5AR4s and I was mortified to say the least. I decided to leave them in place and use the stock tubes (RCA 6AC7, JAN Philips 6SL7, TJ meshplate 300B) to burn the amps in. After at least 500 hours there hasn't been a problem with either amp though I do have a pair of Mullards on standby . I just bought another 299A and when it arrives I'll try the new version Sovtek in my old 299 and see if it holds up there, the 299 is harder on the rectifier than the Laurels are I'm sure. Regarding this thread and the bickering reminded me of a joke I heard years ago. If you have a sense of humor keep reading. What's the difference between a porcupine and an audiophiles listening room? A porcupine has its pricks on the outside.

Give me a break. Maggies? With 250w/ch? & a 500watt sub? LMFAO Are you sure you're on the right Forum? Anyone who thinks that setup is the "WOW" system compared to a 2A3/Klipsch (preferably Khorn, Belle or LaScala) has their head stuck up their a$$. Seriously. Mike Sanders, founder & owner of Quicksilver Audio has been making low powered tube amps for years. He used be an engineer at Magnepan. I'll give you ONE guess what speakers he's been using the last 20+ years. (hint: it ain't Maggies) ---------------- Artto, Maybe I didn't make myself clear. My choice is SETs and though I'm new to horns, Forte IIs for less than a month, I like the sound level the combo is capable of. My point was that most visitors to my home enjoy the sound of the SET Forte setup but they almost always prefer the high powered SS, Maggie, subwoofer combo. Keep in mind that these people almost always have some kind of surround reciever and almost never listen to music other than background music. Most of their listening is DVD video soundtracks and perhaps they can better relate to the SS home theatre setup rather than the SETs and vinyl. It's all a matter of perspective.

With a 2A3 SET Paramours I rarely witnessed peaks above 2 watts if you like your music very relaxed I would say SET is definitely the way to go ! Its all subjective like everything else in this hobby. Me I want my music to be reproduced honestly like the artist attended the recording to do not with some magical mystique that I will never hear at a live event ! Craig ---------------- It's all a matter of perspective. Though the Mark IIIs may be outputting 1 watt with peaks reaching 10 watts for your normal listening the 2A3s are probably pushing .2 watts with 2 watt peaks. The headroom is the same and the more efficeint speakers required by the 2A3s compensates for the low output. Musical reproduction will always be subjective and everyone has an opinion as to which method sounds the best. I personally love the sound of my SETs, actually most SETs, but when it comes down to filling a room with sound I fire up the Maggies with 250 watts/channel of clean solid state and a 500 watt sub. Everyone that's listened likes the sound of the SETs and is usually impressed with the soundstage, ambience and the "I can see the band" clarity but when the same track is played on the Maggies with light dimming power the response is "WOW". Like I said at the start, perspective.
  8. Tony, There is a guy that posts on Audio Asylum that has a website devoted to DIY cables and various other tweaks. I have personally used the speaker cable instructions with excellent results. The website address is www.geocities.com/jonrisch/index.htm Good luck.
  9. What I'm thinking about selling is a pair of Scott 220A monoblocs. One with the matching 120A preamp and one without. Both are rebuilt with quality components and I've been using them on a daily basis for over a year with no problems, they sound great. The problem is they don't sell often, especially as pairs and I'm having a problem coming up with a price that's fair to all. Any suggestions?
  10. Is it permissible to offer items for sale on the forum?
  11. Brian, The best way to audition speakers is to take them home to your own room. That way you are using your own equipment and the speaker placement your room requires. If your dealer won't loan them to you perhaps they offer a money back gaurantee if your not happy. Regards, Joe

My problem is this I have a Pioneer elite Cd Changer (pd-f27) for some reason every time i change the channel on my Tv (pioneer 53 hdtv) through the Sat receiver (DTC 100) my cd changer pauses. IT seems that something is happening to the laser reading the CD during these channel changes. It happens every time. I think it must be a shielding issue can anyone give me advice on fixing this. thanks Gene ---------------- Gene, I had a similar problem when I was using an old Shure Bros. processor. When I would change the sattelite channel the processor would mute. It was because the infrared coding were the same between the 2 remotes but only for the 1 particular button. Try changing the channel manually at the receiver and see if the problem doesn't go away. I don't think there is any way to correct the problem short of changing components. Joe

I expect the improved dynamics are what have you turning the volume down. leok ---------------- They do seem to go quite well together. Where I was listening at the 12:00 position with the Vandersteens I only need 9:00 with the Forte II. These are my first horns and so far I'm quite happy.
