The R-112SW also has the WA-2 port. In fact it appears they have the exact same plate amp and driver. The SPL-120 looks to be a superficial change to the R-112SW cabinet. The RP Series RP-1200SW re-introduced the cabinet styling of the R-112SW, so maybe they wanted to separate the lines by styling.

Very possible, my SPL-120 hits way better than the R-120SW it replaced, my wife actually worries if we are pissing off the neighbors at times with it.  I keep the levels down after hours.  Not using the WA-2 feature now, but nice to have it later when I am no longer in an apartment.  Containing ultra low frequency response would be difficult.

Well, I'm curious if there was an issue?

The consensus is they have been known to inject things at times to steer those into other brands especially after they started going with a paid subscriber model.   No one that owns Cinema 800's I spoke with understands what they posted.   It is true that Atmos gets mixed to the the left and right mains due to not having dedicated Atmos speakers like the Cinema 1200's, but the mains do indeed play discrete when they are supposed to.   My son loves the setup (I added an unused R120-SW to it, but not the surround speakers).

I used a UMIK-1 with REW to determine the bass room correction at the main listening position for my Heritage Jubilee system.  In my smallish room, there was way too much bass room gain.  Luckily, my processor has a built-in multichannel parametric EQ that is supported by REW.

In REW you can turn that down.  It's not simple to work with it and many fail at it.

  4. From Delray Beach here :)

Being you are from here, we have been having some major storms lately.  For a client we lost two firewalls and an AP.   A couple years ago my Vizio TV got zapped.  I have surge protectors and all that, didn't bother putting in a claim.  Also our power for the most part is terrible at time with fluxuations up and down (terrible for electronics).

Check eBay, a lot of times people are selling the soundbars only.   Did you contact Klipsch to see about options?   They are closing out a lot of things now and they may have a mismatched soundbar laying around.

  5. Been reading up a lot on this subject and while Audyssey was 'the way' a decade or so ago, now with software we can do our own Audyssey and be more accurate and even far better in sampling multiple conditions.  I have XT32 and I have not been impressed with it, I did my own measurements and entered them and it sounded more balanced right off the bat.

This video really inspired me to give it a go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ-Voqr4b0Y

He talks about Accourate and it's a bit more advanced and can get far more accuracy, but it's a $500 application (I am not sure if the 14 day trial they offer allows full access to all aspects of the program).

I bought a UMIK-1 (the 2 model is really not needed for just room correction), I had a tripod and downloaded the REW software and the extras the above video recommended.   I am going to have to plan a weekend to do this and hopefully don't drive my neighbors/family mad with all the chirping it will need.

If anyone has any advice if Ratbuddyessy would make the above easier let me know.

Anyone gone down this road, care to comment?

  6. Format is in the speaker type, (what I think the crossover should be), and then what the speaker is rated +/-3dB to.  I have been told to put all speakers at the "small" setting.   Not sure if my front stage is better left full range/LFE+Main.   I have been reading and see that a crossover should be set around where the speaker is -3 to -6 dB.  I want to get it to some baseline and then play with the UMIK-1 and REW I just picked up.  Mostly just going to room correction/level matching as I have nothing I can upload a correction file to.

    My room measurements are:

    9' TV dist

    8.5' seat to center

    9' main speaker width

    10x12 room

    Low Pass

    Chorus II (full-range or 40) 39Hz
    Academy (60 or 80) 65Hz
RP-500SA (150 Klipsch recommended) not listed
    RP-250S (60 or 80) 58Hz

    High Pass

    SPL-120 (125Hz) 24-125Hz

  7. This is a good thread with some answers: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/costco-exclusive-klipsch-reference-cinema-system-with-dolby-atmos-5-1-4.3219069/

What to upgrade really depends on a lot of things.   For most they go with better subs, those that can hit below 20Hz...but if you live in an apartment that could be an issue.   Then they will upgrade mains/center, but if you don't have the room then that's an impossible upgrade.   For $400 that is a steal though.  I just snagged a Cinema 800 for $399 and this system will smoke that, sure you need a receiver but that is low-hanging fruit.

I always check accessories4less.com for receivers.   They are one of the best bang for bucks and you get a warranty (unlike ebay).  You can pick up a RX-V385 there for only $199.  For a $300 budget you can get either the RX-V585 or RX-V680.  I used to run Yamaha, but now I run Denon.  If you can push the budget $99 you can get into a RX-V685 which brings more especially better YPAO RSC and another $100 can get you into a RX-A2A which offers more including HDR10+ as well as part of their premium lineup so all the electronics inside will be better.

They have your reference system for $100 more than you paid though, like I said that was a really good purchase if those fill your needs and if you just wanted something to start out with will sound great as you upgrade and in the end you are not out a lot of money.

  8. Ideally you want timbre matched speakers...they don't have to be the same form-factor.   Also with things like DIRAC and Audessy, things can be a bit more lax.   My setup is pretty mixed, but sounds excellent for movies.   People actually ask about what I have and how they can duplicate it.   The Chorus II's and academy are still amazing today, sadly most don't want to pay the prices they are getting.   There is a new in box set of Chorus II's on ebay for $7500 free pickup in Central Square, NY.  They are matching serials in oiled Oak.

  9. I picked up some Momentus 4's from Senn. for a good price and they sound decent and have amazing battery life.  I was using Soundcore Liberty 2 and 3 pros.  I like the liberty 2's the best, but they don't charge half the time and when they do charge I can't get through a whole night of listening (mostly just youtube videos).

You can actually use the included sub along with the R-120.  The sub that comes with the soundbar connects via Bluetooth and you’d wire the R-120 to the soundbar’s RCA sub out as you stated.

Might as well give it a shot.  Hopefully they’ll play well together.  You’ll probably have to mess around with the output levels on both subs and possibly the phase adjustment on the R-120 but if it were me I’d at least try it.

Thanks Wuz, the problem is there isn't enough room I think.   I am going to set it up though and then figure out if we can add the surrounds (Klipsch 3's not sure if the 5's can work).

    Yes

I know the R-120SW isn't a great sub, but since I am stuck with it it's good to know I can upgrade the Cinema 800 for my kids.  I wanted a Samsung 9x0 setup, but when I found the Cinema 800 new open box for $399 shipped, it's a helluva deal.  It's also only for a bedroom.  If I could do it over, I'd order them the SPL-120 like I ended up with.

I was shopping Amazon for subs and was "saving items" for later because of Prime Day coming up.  Somehow I did a buy it now on the R-120SW.

  12. I contacted DeanG, but he hasn't answered.   I am interested if he can do the Academy like the K-Stack.   Mr. Crites did a good job, but like many have mentioned it's more a OEM update than a full upgrade.  My brother could probably build something for me as he is an electronics expert, but he just doesn't have the time.

Howdy, Know of at least 1 at this second doing the Academy with Chorus2 front which has been  @Mikekid.

Member likes his setup with no rears as recall.

Can see no reason not to pursue this line of thinking with your setup, space.

Some prefer 3 fronts alike. You may want more input though. I would...

    @archdukeobvious

I am also pairing my Academy (originally paired with Quartets) with Chorus II's and it's impressive.   My full system is in my sig.

It's not all Heritage, but I didn't have room for all Heritage and people really enjoy watching movies here.   They will mention movement and how dynamic it is.   Even before I added a sub recently.

  14. Is Rtings review correct?

    Sound Rating: 5.4

    Dolby Atmos Supported
    Dolby Digital Incorrect Implementation
    Dolby Digital Plus Incorrect Implementation
    Dolby TrueHD Supported
    DTS Not Supported
    DTS:X Not Supported
    DTS-HD MA Not Supported
    PCM Channels Up To 7.1

This soundbar has amazing audio format support via ARC. It supports Dolby Digital, which is the most common surround sound format. It can also play lossless and object-based surround sound formats like Dolby Atmos and has eARC support. However, unlike the Sony HT-A3000, it doesn't support DTS content. Also, when you play Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus content, any dedicated left or right audio plays on both channels simultaneously. This is also true with the left and right surround channels, meaning that sound effects aren't as accurately localized within the soundstage. For example, a voice meant to come from the left seems like it's coming from the left and right simultaneously, which doesn't give you the same life-like feel.

yes it will   ,  as we speak ,  the O.P  is realising that his  Chorus II  do  not sound  like  klipsch Chorus II because the networks or capacitors are aftermarkets  ,  he can install  new klipsch  parts  to restore the klipsch sound   or he can  purchase a used set of   Chorus II crossovers

Not exactly the reason, just that most speakers today even high end are different form factor.   I love the sound of mine setup.   However; I have heard Crities was more a stock rebuild, but DeanG puts higher quality components and some other tricks in (like the Popbumpers did).

  16. I recently picked up a new open box Cinema 800 for $399 to replace the kid's Yamaha YAS-209.   I had ordered a Klipsch R-120SW which is not worth returning for the costs (they did credit me $35 bringing my total for it $250).

Would this be a better sub than the included 10" sub, I would connect it via RCA?

    Thanks

  17. Older topic, but still relative.   The SPL-120 can use the WA-2 for wireless ability.  Based on what I have read in blind testing you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.   I just picked up a SPL-120 for $399.   Most of the reviews that compare it to other brands "not much more" are out-dated.   Most of it's competition is now $300-500 more (like the KEF Kube 12b and SVS options).
