  1. I can certainly understand the utility of a wide dispersal technology in a 5.1 environment, where the surrounds have to provide 270' of ambient coverage (each speaker 270/2=135'). But it seems that in a 7.1 environment (with two side and two rear surrounds) the sound from each speaker can be (should be?) more localized (each speaker 270/4=68'). Thoughts?
  2. I just wonder why the computer type connection wouldn't be better. Perhaps it's cheaper and neater to accomplish the same thing. ---------------- The 'high-density' VGA connector like nearly all computer monitors use is component video. The three colors come through three different wires. It's just a different form and should look just as good as the component video input with the three RCA connectors (red blue and green). To get a little more technical, there are actually *five* signals, including vertical and horizontal synch. In the 3-wire version they are piggy-backed on two color wires. In the computer version they have separate wires. No big deal.
  3. I've got the Forte's and an Academy up front. I'm migrating (slowly) from 2-ch to HT. My "surrounds" are Quintets, which provide ambience, but not much else. (They do sound a *lot* better than the cheesy little KLHs that were my first try.) The LW (lusty wench) has agreed to do a room re-orientation for the HT. (We were set up sideways. Now the TV will go on a short wall.) That means that I have a place for rear surrounds, so I have to buy at least 2 new speakers. Might as well make it four. What wall-mounted surrounds are a decent sonic match to the Forte's and Academy?
  4. I hesitate to mention these because they're "well used", but the price is right! LA SCALA SPEAKERS ARE WHITE OUTSIDE AND BLACK INSIDE, HANDLES AND WHEELS FOR EASY MOBILITY! RETAIL $1000.00 FOR PAIR ASKING 500.00 The guy is in Ohio and doesn't want to ship. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2573154951
  5. double post. I'm apparently hitting some wrong key while editting the Subject line. Sorry.
  6. I'm interested too. The front cover on these Forte's is getting a little long in the tooth.
  7. Relisted. Reserve is $600 the pair. IMO well worth it.

    Finding Nemo!

One question: WHO WROTE THE LAW THAT SAYS, ANIMATION IS FOR KIDS ??? "I know it's for kids, but..." "I got it to show to my niece..." "Is it too much for my sister's unborn child?" What's wrong with you people? Can't you just enjoy a movie without apologizing? If it's for anybody, 'Finding Nemo' is for parents. It was written by a parent to speak to parents about the pressures and emotions that all parents feel. And quite beside its merit as a movie, the DVD is simply amazing! (And if you want forewarning of another ADULT animated movie, check the previews on the second disk for 'The Incredibles'. )

    Phono pre-amps?

Anyone use a Rane? (Pro gear) It's also got a balanced output.

    Phono pre-amps?

  18. Considering acquiring a real pre/pro. (Outlaw? Lexicon MC-1?) It looks like I'm going to have to resign myself to units with no phono stage. I can't live without my table (and vinyl library); it's going to have to be a phono pre-amp. Recomendations? Caveats?
  19. Welcome to the forum. I'm in the area, but don't have anything to trade. Good luck.
  20. I know nothing about the DD, and there's precious little info on this site. You should ask over in the Promedia DD-5.1 forum.
  21. ---------------- Allowing cats to go outside results in reducing their life expectancy by about %75. 3-4 years as opposed to 10-12. ---------------- Nonsense! Two of my older cats recently died. Both were in/out cats. One was 25, the other 22.
  22. ---------------- Either way you go - good luck................Have your cats/cat being DECLAWED? When I had cats, it was the best 75.00 bucks I ever spent. ---------------- That's BARBARIC! I would give the cat away before cutting off its fingertips.
  23. I'm starting to notice that some of the high-end pre/recv have both unbalance and balanced inputs and line-level outs. Can someone please explain what the practical difference is them and when using a balanced i/f is appropriate?
  24. Actually, I think the Ultra 5.1s are a good place to start. Normally I would advise starting out by acquiring more speaker than you can afford because everything else in the system will be limited by the quality of the speakers. But that advice isn't quite so good when a) you already have acceptable speakers, there's so dang many channels it may be tough to afford better all at once, c) there is the rest of the system capability to acquire. With stereo the system capability was relatively inexpensive. Receiver and an alternate source (probably phono). With that small investment and a good set of speakers you have a listenable system. With HT you have put a LOT more into the system just to make it listenable (and viewable). IMO, you'd do well to acquire a decent AV receiver next, use the pre-outs to drive the Ultras, then acquire some decent sources and video. Later plan on an upgrade first replacing the entire Ultra system (by that time you'll know a lot more about speaker options) and plug the new system into the receiver's amps (that you hadn't been using). By then it might be time to start upgrading electronics, but you're well on your way. Ciao!
