Thanks Dean!
  4. I just won the auction for my first tube......a Scott 299D. I had won another 299D two weeks ago on the Bay, but the seller did not package it properly. Well, that's an understatement, just ask Craig. It was severely damaged in transit to Craig at NOSValves. I am hoping the seller is going to refund me the money as he said he would? We'll see. I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank Tom Mobley of the Forum who was also bidding on the same amp. He respectfully backed off so I could win it. Thanks again Tom for your hospitality. Much apprecited. I am looking forward to my first venture into the tube world!

I would also like to know which HT amps will provide the best performance as a 2 channel setups as well (I don't have the resources for a standalone 2 channel system. I have heard that Denon, H/K and Outlaw makes some nice, mellow sounding amps. Any "real life" experiences that can be shared? Thanks! I have never seen a pair go on eBay for less that $650 plus shipping. Buy any decent pair of CW's for $500. That is a steal. They go for more everyday!

But without serial numbers and knowing what's inside the cabinets, who knows?? And, I am not willing to pay a 22.5% buyers premium. That's ridiculous. Has anyone here done one of the eBay live auctions before? If so, how'd it go? Was it really worth the 22.5% on top of the auction price?

(Seller started off with too high a first bid). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3062264817&category=14993 ---------------- Bill, No, I don't want Cornwall II's. I would love to buy some nice CW alnico's for $600 though. But as most here would agree, that's wishful thinking. My experience is that the later model CW's go for around $750, and the older (and more desirable to me) CW's generally go for a bit more $800-900 on eBay. Condition dependent of course.

I don't think that the Cornwalls will actually fit where he has his current speakers, but nonetheless, the question stands. Both speakers are in generally the same shape. The Cornwalls have the actual metal horns in them and the KLFs are about 4-5 years old. They are both $500. I will need to get rid of his Infinity SM 122s, so if you have an idea for what these would be worth, please include it. I believe he paid around $600 for them. They look to be dark walnut. Cornwalls all the way! They are a fantastic speaker. I paid $750 for my latest set, and I think I got a great deal. David ----------------

  12. http://www.audioweb.com/Ad/AdInfo.asp?adid=139098 No wonder these are still unsold two months later. They have definitely seen better days that's for sure. All I can think about is the abuse they have gone through. How sad. And they have a lot of nerve ffering these at $600

I have an opportunity to acquire a pair of late 70's Klipschorns locally. I love big speakers and the Tannoy Ardens I have now are great, but in my 17 by 20 foot living room they need at least 75-100 watts to come to life. Currently I'm driving them with a Mac MC275, and the combination works pretty well. The problem is that I love the sound of low-powered tube amps, and would love to find a big, dynamic speaker that can run on 8-15 watts. So here's the question: do Klipschorns actually need to be positioned in room corners, or can they sound as good standing out in the open (2-3 feet from the rear wall in the case of my room?) Also, how big does a room have to be for K-horns to work optimally? I don't have the corners available, so would I be better off with a Cornwall? I've never actually heard a K-horn, but am going on their reputation (despite audiophiles who tend to frown on Klipsch). I know they sound different from vintage Tannoys but I'm hopeful they would work. Any help would be much appreciated. Alex ---------------- Audiophiles tend to frown on Klipsch???? Huh? This is news to me. Bose for sure. But Klipsch? Say it ain't so!

  15. I like a lot of others take the weather here in So Cal for granted. I was reminded how good I have it after I spent Thanksgiving week in Utah in sub 25 degree weather. How sweet today was at 75-80 degrees.

The MC products are a proprietary setup that is called unity coupled very different from any other Push Pull design. MC had some very creative engineers! Push Pull in general means there are 2 tubes per channel that are handed 1/2 the wave form that is separated by the proceeding tube called the phase splitter. The signal is amplified by each to and reunited with its partner in the output transformer. This all has to be done with precision to alleviate distortion. All this was perfected back in the 50's and 60's so distortion in a properly rebuilt and working vintage amp is not audible to the normal human ear. SET uses one tube per channel and is what’s called Directly Heated Triode or DHT for short. In general less power is the norm but a sweeter pull you into the 3D sound is how it is described for the most part.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Craig ---------------- Thanks Craig. 22. I can't wait to see my 299D tubes glowing once I get it back from Craig at NOSValves. If everything goes right it will truly be a Merry Christmas at my home this year. And the neighbors, like it or not, will ring in the New Year in style with my Corns a blarin!
