  1. Gary, I've been on the Internet. I'll be logging off in a few minutes if you want to call me; I'll be home the rest of the day. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  2. Gary, You're quite welcome for the referral. Ken is a great guy and one of my best friends. He is also incredibly knowledgable about audio. I would try to sell my Cornwalls through the Forum, but I don't know that a potential buyer would understand that I will not ship them; they would have to be picked up. If you know of any potential buyers, please let me know. I think that I posted pictures of them earlier this year with the help of a fellow Forum member, but I don't remember which thread it was. Good luck with your new Cornwalls. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  3. Gary, Congratulations on your sale of the Altecs. Do I get a finders fee? Since your buying another pair of Cornwalls, I guess that you won't be interested in my 1976 Decorator Cornwalls then. On to Audiogon they will go. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  4. The instructions in my owners manual for my recently acquired VAC Avatar Special Edition tube amplifier, suggests that you try connecting your speakers, no matter what their nominal impedance is, to both the 4 ohm and 8 ohm taps that are on the amplifier. I connected my Cornwalls to both the 4 and 8 ohm taps, and greatly preferred the sound of the Cornwalls connected to the 4 ohm taps. There seems to be a much better bass sound and weight to the music, without losing any imaging. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  5. I also suggest using tube amplification with your Cornwalls. I've used a NOSValves Scott 299-D to drive my Cornwalls with nice results, but I'm now using a VAC Avatar Special Edition integrated tube amplifer with even better results. IMO, your Cornwalls will love tube amplification. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  6. Gary, If you don't already have it, I suggest that you pick up the SACD of Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way". If you are a fan of Miles' fusion period, I think that you would really appreciate the sound of the SACD. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  7. "How about The Stones greatest hits in a sort of octagonal shaped lp? Anyone have that? It's got a tribute to recently deceased Brian Jones on the inside cover." Gary, The Rolling Stones LP that you refer to is "Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits, Volume 2)", which was the band's second US hits compilation, following "Big Hits (High Tides And Green Grass)". Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  8. Chris, I'm sorry that the pictures on my last post did not take. I have an internet link to 19 pictures of the speakers taken by the previous owner, but I'm not very good at downloading pictures. If you send me your e-mail address, I can forward you an internet link to the pictures, and you will be able to see them, and hopefully download them if you like. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  9. Chris, Thanks for the compliment on my Cornwalls. Attached are 2 more pictures of the speakers individually. Again, these were taken by the previous owner. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  10. Gary/GRB, Thanks for the compliments on my Cornwalls. It would definitely be nice to get together sometime in the near future. Take Care, Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  11. Here is a picture of my 1976 Decorator Cornwalls taken by their previous owner. I believe that they look even better in person. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  12. Gary, Congratulations on getting your 555ES back, and in working order. If you like the "Gaucho" SACD, you'll be happy to know that in June 2004, Universal Music plans to release Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill", "Countdown To Ecstasy", "Pretzel Logic", "Katy Lied", "Royal Scam" and "Aja" on SACD. This is great news for Steely Dan fans with SACD playback capability. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  13. ---------------- On 2/7/2004 11:49:48 PM garymd wrote: I also have the Carole King SACD. I've always liked her music but the SACD doesn't seem all that great to me. Not even sure which version I have (I only do 2-channel). Volume seems to be out of sync a little. Voice to low sometimes, other wierd volume changes. Just checked and it's multi-channel. ---------------- Gary, The original 2-channel SACD of "Tapestry" contains the original LP mix and sounds excellent to me, while the 2-channel mix on the Multi-channel "Tapestry" SACD has been remixed, and to me doesn't sound nearly as good as the original 2-channel SACD. I know that it used to sound great on the 555ES player. This is one of my favorite SACDs. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  14. "I got the XA777ES, mint cond, sssssssssounds ggggggggreat, both redbook and sacd!!!!" Smilin', Congratulations on your purchase of an XA777ES. If you picked it up for $1000, you got an absolutely incredible deal. I paid $1500 for mine, and I think that I got an excellent deal. I'm glad that you're happy with the sound of the unit; now you know why I am so content with mine, as are most other XA777ES owners that I know. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  15. "Ed, When are you selling your 777?" Gary, No time soon, I'm very content with it. I'm glad that you're happy with the 555ES. By the way, did you ever get your second one fixed? Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  16. "Ed, I read your thoughts and than I boughts I have the XA777CE in the car, waiting to SNEEK it into my house when my wife takes my daughter to dance in about an hour heh heh heh. He gave me great interconnects and sacd's too." Congratulations on your purchase!! By the way, your message shown above shows XA777CE, but I'm guessing that you mean an XA777ES?? Anyway, enjoy your machine and let everyone what you think of it, and whether or not you think that it needs to be modded. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  17. "Ed, Thank-you for your opinion, so far in this thread I have recieved a lot of opibions from those who have not HEARD the players in question. In reading more reviews last night about this cdp, I found out a couple NEW things about the 777 and cdp-1, most are being modified with a superclock, and better mechanicals, also some have seen problems with clicking noise. I was hoping to get some feedback and opinions on the clicking, and mods. Smilin" Smilin, You're quite welcome. I have not yet experienced any problems with clicking noises on my XA777ES and I'm very content with it. Previously, I owned a 555ES, and although that is a very, very nice unit, the XA777ES is much better on both redbooks and SACDs, as well it should be, considering the price difference of the units. Again, I am very content with my XA777ES and have no intentions of having it modded. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  18. I own a Sony XA777ES SACD player and think that it sounds excellent on both redbooks and SACDs. In my system, a NOSValves upgraded Scott 299-D and '76 Cornwalls, the XA777ES sounds very smooth and warm, with a nice laid back sound. Both well mastered redbooks and SACDs can sound amazing on this machine. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  19. "Parchman Farm" As far as I know, Humble Pie never recorded Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm". However, Cactus recorded it on their first self-titled LP, and maybe that's the version that you are referring to. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  20. Gary, Other Humble Pie recommendations besides the already mentioned "Rockin' The Fillmore", would be their third self-titled LP "Humble Pie" and it's follow-up ,"Rock On", which was available as an original silver MFSL CD, which sounds incredible. FYI, "As Safe As Yesterday Is" and "Town And Country" are the band's first two LPs. All of the LPs mentioned above include Peter Frampton, who left after "Rockin' The Fillmore". Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  21. I'm very happy with my Scott 299-D, recently upgraded by Craig. It drives my Cornwalls fine, with no need for a sub-woofer. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  22. Kudret, To me, the XA777ES has a more laid back sound than the 555ES, without losing any of the imaging or the detail that the 555ES has. In a way, it sounds more analog and warmer than the 555ES. In comparison, the sound of the 555ES seems to be more upfront and in your face, but not in a bad way. By no means am I putting down the 555ES; it is definitely an excellent sounding machine, but the XA777ES just sounds better overall to me, as it should, considering the price difference. By the way, it does sound even better since I just got my Scott 299-D refurbished by Craig. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  23. I can vouch for the excellent 2 channel sound of the 555ES because I used to own one, before selling it to a fellow forum member. The only reason that I sold it was because I stumbled across a nice deal on a Sony XA777ES player. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  24. "How bout Carol King Tapestry Cat Stevens Tea for The Tillerman Cream Cream" I don't mean to keep being a pain, but here are a few more corrections: Carole King's 1st release was "Writer", "Tapestry" was her 2nd; "Matthew And Son" was Cat Stevens' 1st LP, and "Tea For The Tillerman" was his 4th, and 2nd on A&M, just after "Mona Bone Jakon". Also, Cream's debut LP was entitled "Fresh Cream". Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
  25. "IIRC Steve Winwood did indeed play all the instruments on one or more of his later solo albums (e.g., Arc of a Diver)." Mark, You are correct, Steve Winwood does play all of the instruments on "Arc Of A Diver". Also, he plays most of the instruments on Traffic's "John Barleycorn", which was intended to be his first solo LP, until late in the recording sessions, at which time he brought in Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, which turned it into a Traffic release.
