  1. Linksys is about 4 years old. Has two antenna's. House is 1978 so it's all wood studs...very little metal. Single floor, ranch style. Router at one end of the house and dining room at other end of the house. Like I said...laptop picks up great (even out in the yard) but Netbook doesn't seem to have as strong a receiver (probably to conserve battery power).
  2. I bought my wife an Eee netbook for Christmas and although it works great, it doesn't pick up my wi-fi signal near as well as my laptop does. I'm looking for an inexpensive signal boost for my Linksys router. I don't need to boost it down the neighborhood. I just need another 20 feet or so of signal strength to get me to the dining room. You folks have any inexpensive recommendations that you know work? It's waaaay too much trouble to move the router. I'm not up for any attic work when all I need is about 20 feet. I was hoping to find something for $50 or less.
  3. "Strange Brew" with Bob and Doug Mckenzie! Nothin like a comedy cult classic eh!!!
  4. Time to drink the Kool-Aid with the rest of you. Ordered the 880 this morning! Now I'm looking forward to my package.
  5. Hey DoubleJ, I assume you just found the same model battery's on ebay that are in the remote but what model charger did you buy? You guys are really tempting me to pull the plug and just buy the thing!!!!!
  6. In case some of you who own subs haven't got off your tails to try their sub in various areas of your home theater room (or family room), let me just say that I was one of those until yesterday. I bought my sub 12 about 6 moths ago, plopped it down next to my mains and never moved it again. It sounded great (or so I thought). Yesterday, I stayed home from work since I had a nasty head cold and while I was sitting in my favorite listening position, I thought I'd move my sub around the room to see how it sounded. Holy crap what a difference!!!! Once I found it's sweet spot, IT WAS LIKE TURNING A LIGHT SWITCH ON! I can't believe how much of a difference placement made in the room! I tried 5 different places and it went from non-existent bass to so much bass that I had to turn the gain down. Who knew my wife's desire to NOT have the sub up in the front of the room would eventually lead to better sounding bass in my house. The best position ended up being the left side of my recliner/sofa (where I sit) with the sub firing towards the wall. I've now been enlightened!
  7. I'm ready to drop the cash and buy a Universal remote to clean my system up so my wife and the baby-sitter can actually watch what they want without having to play with 10 remote controls. The Harmony 880 is on Amazon right now for around $130 which sounds like a good deal. My concern is with some of the comments of folks that have had it for a few years say that the charging station and buttons may quit working and the warranty is out by then. Are those comments few and far between? What's your takes? Is it worth the money or should I look at somethine else???? There's other models for around $100 but the 880 sounds like a good deal for $30 more IF it doesn't break on me. My budget stops at the $130 mark. I'm not paying more than that for a remote. Thanks!
  8. Need some quick recommendations here... My buddy is turning his bonus room into a multi-use room with home theater (very large 1080p projection screen). It's 16x20 with vaulted ceiling. Not sure what Denon receiver he's got but he said it's 90 wpc so it sounds like it will do whatever he needs. He wanted to put the HD 500 speaker system in and I told him he wouldn't get the punch he's looking for with that system in that size room. I'd like to tell him to get a 5.0 speaker package (Similar to Quintet stuff) and then add a used 12" sub. He's looking to spend $600 for the HD 500 so he might be prodded to up that to $1k (and thus I'd be looking for a used 12" sub). He's not the type of guy to go think, analyze, listen, return, etc... He wants to plop $1K or less down, plug it in and watch movies. Recommendations? Amazon had the Quintet SL system on for $399+free shipping but I don't know anything about those types of packages. I'm a large speaker guy myself with my Chorus II's. Thanks for the help.
  9. Yellowstone huh? So...if someone wanted to plan a trip to Yellowstone from sayyyy Florida, where's the best place to fly into that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I've always wanted to go there but it's too hard to get to.
  10. Excellent Input! I knew I could count on you guys. Our plan is to review a lot of what's been said here and sit down with the appropriate professional and make sure we're dotting all the T's and crossing all the i's. In my view, simpler is better. The business she is doing would be more to the likes of graphic designer and therefore lawsuits are not a major concern. She's been with the company for 25 years and knows them very well. In this economy, there's not a lot of leverage left so we are not being greedy. If it ever beomes more trouble than it's worth, she just quits. This is additional income to the family and the intent from day one for dropping from full time to part time was to stay at home with the kids...which is priority #1.
  11. You guys are exactly the right bunch to ask this question so let me throw it out there... I live in Florida and my wife is being asked to stop working as an employee and come back as a contractor. Since we had kids, she quit working full time for them and she's now been working part time with this company for the last 3 years (about 12 hours per week) and will be putting in the same amount of time per week. The company is trying to cut their costs which is understandable but they still need her specialized services. We like the company and are not trying be greedy. We just want to make the best decision going forward. Almost all of her work can be done over the internet and from home however, she will need to go into the office a few hours per week for face to face meetings. Since we live 5 miles away, there's no real travel expenses. Cell phone and internet are the main expenses. Oh yeah...the nature of this business means there's virtually no way to get sued. So...why would I go to the trouble of "incorporating" versus not? Cost of incorporating versus cost of NOT incorporating? Other risks? Tax issues? Easy versus hard? Thoughts anyone?????
  12. Hey Seti, Those things you are showing in brass(I think) look like the inserts we use here in Florida for attaching hurricane panels to the wood framing/siding in our house. I think I bought mine from Ace Hardware but you might check McMaster Carr to see if they have what your looking for. If you've never used them, they sell to anyone with a credit card as far as I know. http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-inserts/=255a78
  13. Hey gang. I had this worded badly in technical questions so it didn't get much air time so I'm trying it over here. I got a good deal on a used Sub-12 this weekend and need to wire it up to my Harman Kardon 7200. I did a quick check with short wires to make sure it works and it seems to work very well. WOW...very well!!! Anyway...The easiest place for me to put this is behind my couch near the listener position. Since I'll be running my wiring thru the attic, it will be easy for me to snake the wiring down the wall along the Romex leading to the elecrical outlet that I would be plugging it into for power however, my common sense just says NOT to run the speaker wire right next to the 120V. It would really make my life easy though. Also...it would be a 25 to 30 foot run from my receiver to the speaker. What type of wire (with RCA jacks) do I need? Think cheap but good quality here. I'm already over my allowance with the purchase of the Sub-12...ha! It sounds awesome with my Chorus II's. Wuzzzer replied and said to get some shielded RCA wires but what's the difference in the $4 shielded wire verses the $50 sheilded wire (standard vs premium as they call it)? I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get to play with it more.
  14. Hey gang, I got a good deal on a used Sub-12 this weekend (and the wifey was okay with it) and need to wire it up to my Harman Kardon 7200. 15. I'm a "do it yourselfer" so when the time comes, I think I'll go down to my local Sherwin Williams and follow Thebe's advice. I'm all about painting once in a decade if I can do it!!!! Those are good odds!!!
  16. I gotta say Thebe's it sounds like you know what your talking about so I may have to follow your directions. I wanted a brick house but it just wasn't in the cards when it came time to buy. Based on your roller recommendation, you never mentioned renting (or buying) a good sprayer. Is spraying stain out of the question? There's at least 300 vertical firring strips around my house and brushing them is going to be a major pain! I never expected this thread to go this far so hopefully it's helped someone out other than just me. Thanks a bunch!
  17. I'm in West Melbourne which is about half-way between Jacksonville and Miami. The CWF actually sounds pretty good as I'm sure it protects the wood but my house is already stained a dark brownish red and my wife wants to change the color to something a little lighter...and we all know who's going to win that argument. Is the CWF only to be used on bare wood? It's a good size house (about 3500 square feet TOTAL under roof) so it's going to take quite a bit of paint.
  18. Okay Thebes...here's the goods. I remembered to read the side of the paint can. The house has been painted/stained with: Behr, Plus10, Solid Color, House Fence Stain, Oil-Latex Formula, Water Clean-up, Made for Vertical Surfaces, 10 year warranty. What's the recommended product to paint or stain over it (that won't break a bank)? The stuff you listed above sounds pretty expensive to me since I'll probably have to put at least 2 coats on (we're going to a lighter color). Would it be cheaper for me to buy some type of cheaper primer and then coat it with good stuff?????
  19. Thanks Thebes... That should show you my ignorance when it comes to paint quality. I thought Behr was the good stuff. I'll check the can tonight when I get home from work and see what it is.
  20. Not sure exactly what you mean by your first question but it was previously stained with Behr brand stain with a dark reddish brown tint added. I can get the exact type (just not right now) because we still have the cans from the previous owners. The siding is cedar vertical plywood that looks like rough cut lumber. There are vertical firring strips every 16 inches to cover the vertical seams between the plywood and also to add cosmetic texture. The existing stain job still looks good but it's getting sun-worn on the South side of the house and since we live in a humid/hurricane environment, we don't want to wait until we have problems before we paint/stain. Someone kept this looking nice for the last 31 years and I don't want to destroy it with my first painting effort.
  21. Looking for some good house painters out there... I live in Florida and we bought a 1978 house with cedar siding about 3 years ago. It's nearing time to paint(or stain) the exterior. As far as we can tell, the house has been STAINED since it was built so my question is whether I should PAINT or STAIN it this time? Which is better for a Florida environment? Since there is STAIN on it, should I stay with STAIN or can I PAINT over it? If I PAINT over it, what type of PAINT should I use? The exterior is in excellent condition so my tendancy is to stay with what's working which is STAIN. The house is a darker reddish brown and we're going to go with a slightly lighter color. How many coats should I expect to need? We're going to rent or buy a sprayer. Thanks!
  22. All this is good but what internally makes them a nearfield or farfield or whatever? Is it a crossover change? Physical differences in the cone? What?
  23. This has bugged me for a while... What's the difference (in general) between a "speaker" like I would use at home and a "monitor" like folks use at a studio? Is it like a violin and a fiddle or is there really a difference?
  24. My 5 year old is about to get to the age where I'll actually let him use the remotes for the TV and stuff (supervised of course). My concern though is how quickly my Harmon Kardon can launch my Chorus II's up to volume levels that will bust ears as well as speakers. I know there's parental controls on remotes for channels but does anyone have any suggestions to limit volumes? It's kind of like a governer for the go-kart. I want my kid to learn how to drive it at 5 miles per hour before I let him wreck at 40 miles per hour....
  25. hmmmm...that does seem odd. The Angel food truck for our area delivers the food to us early Saturday morning and we repackage it for the individual ordres and have it ready to be passed out by 10am Saturday mornings. The process works unbelievably well. We have enough volunteers to do the repackaging and passing out of food (and maintaining order with that many folks).
