  1. Here is a jig I use to make the 3''x 13'' cut out in the K-Horn motor board. The square hole in the template is done on the table saw. The template is cut out of 1/2'' mdf. Let's see if this picture posts.
  2. Travis I called Tarheel last night about your idea about your idea of exchanging reei to reel tapes. ( He doesn't have a computer at home yet) Tarheel's all for the idea and so am I. He should be posting this morning sometime. Don
  3. Check this out. I've been recording Jazz and Blues CD's onto my friend's X-2000 from his Jolida tube output player and playing them back at home on my Pioneer RT-909 reel to reel. The sound is amazing. I've just about quit spinning vinyl in favor of listening to tapes.
  4. The interior parts of Klipschorn bass bins have always been constructed from 1/2 inch material. The way I understand it they used to use marine grade plywood but now MDF is used because it is absolutly void free and can be had at a fraction of the cost. Another thing that guys want to make a big deal about is that old K-Horn bass bins were glued and screwed together. The only reason they used screws was because they didn't have nail guns. The glue is what gives the joint it's strength.
  5. Jorjen: I've built several Klipschorn bass bins using 1/2 inch mdf. How many have you built?
  6. That's right Jay. Plus you can you can get veneered MDF at a fraction of the cost of of marine grade plywood. It's foolish to use anything else for speaker cabinet construction.
  7. 900.00 for the 2505 and C-26 is a pretty good deal considering that's what I paid for mine three years ago and mine came without the case. Plus I had to replace the front glass on the C-26 because it was cracked. That alone cost over 100.00. That being said , the Macs are disconected now in favor of a Fisher X-100 integrated tube amp. I can't decide which I like better. Both set-ups sound great with the big ole horns.
  8. I built the bass bins. Klipsch does not offer bass bins for sale.
  9. Speakerfritz, The bass bins are sitting in my shop waiting for a home. By the way, I've got a pair of new K-33's I can install in the cabinets for an extra 250.00. The price empty is 800.00 plus shipping. Don
  10. Tom, How would you go about porting and adjusting the the volume of the La Scala bass bin? The only modification to the stock plan that I was planning on was building the shell out of 1'' MDF instead of 3/4'' like on the new Klipsh model. This in itself is supposed to enhance bass performance. Don
  11. Well, apparently I can't figure out how to use the input device correctly. Tom, what I want to do is build a pair of super La Scalas using 511 horns with 902 or 802 drivers in a 3 way system. By the way Tom, if you're interested I have a pair of K-Horn bass bins for sale.
  12. If I understand this correctly it sounds like a corner loaded bass bin (perhaps a Klipschorn, Jubilee, etc) combined with a 511 & 902 would make a nice 2-way system. I agree that if it extends to to 17kHz (I assume this is a half power point), this would be enough bandwidth Spinning through the idea: 1) 2 way cabinet, with 2) electronic crossover for a 3) steep crossover, and 4) time alignment and the benefit of 5) bi-amping. This would be a very nice and affordable project. Have I forgotten anything? Good Luck, -Tom
  13. What is the difference between Altec 902 and 802 mid range drivers in terms of where they can be crossed?
  14. Bill, There you go. If a pair of 1973 S-3s went for 400 bucks then you would have to think 800 bucks for a set of K-Horn bass bins in 2006 would have to a bargin. I doubt if a DIYer building hybrid K-Horns is worried about re-sale value. So what difference does it make if it's a Genuine Klipsch cabinet? Don
  15. If you want to improve the sound of Speakerlab bass horn get rid of the 3/4 motor board that the woofer is attached to and screw the woofer directly to the front panel that has the 3x13 slot cut in it. The bass sound has more punch using this set up.
  16. That's why I'm building them. How much do you think Klipsch would charge if they did offer unloaded bass bins?
  17. I've toyed with the idea of shipping kits. I think that dealing with problems with buyers who run into assembly issues would be too much to keep up with. I'd just as soon send assembled units. I just shipped a pair to a Forum member in Clleveland using FedEx frieght for 200.00.
  18. Thanks for compliments guys. I've got a couple pairs of these bass bins ready to go. I guess if nobody is interested here I'll go ahead and list them on ebay.
  19. Here's one of my K-horns. The front panel and top section are made from Purpleheart a South American hardwood.
  20. Yes, it's MDF. I guess I'll have to fire the typist. It is not particle board. It is a very dense absolutly void free material witch makes it perfect for speaker building. I've built several sets of these now and they perform great. The pictures are just some random shots during constuction. These units are the perfect starting point for the DIYer who wants to build hybrid K-Horns at a fraction of the cost of buying new. My speakers at home use these bass horns with Altec 511 horns and 902 drivers,Beyma tweeters,ALK networks and K-33s from Bob Crites.
