  1. If you will check my initial post, I listed Ozzy as my number 1 pick! I have 15 Ozzy CDs and several Black Sabaths as well. I have been listening to Michael Ozborn since he was with Black Sabath, back in the 8-track, cassette days! Roger What is your favorite Black Sabbath album?
  2. My list changes all the time, but as of right now: 1. The Rolling Stones 2. The Doors 3. Paul Butterfield 4. The Who 5. Buddy Holly, or Love, or Big Brother, or SRV, or ....
  3. I always like the Spirit of America over the Blue Flame.
  4. Is your favorite on the list from Popular Mechanics? Two of mine were for sure, the Chaparral and Mario Andretti's turbine car. 11 of the Greatest American Race Cars of All Time http://flip.it/oZ4Dc

  6. I think that model works great for you. You are educated and intelligent enough to be disciplined about checking your levels, and keeping up with a medically developed and effective treatment. Most people are not. They do not keep up, or quit taking their medicine, or are not sophisticated enough to become aware of known better advancements. Or, worse, they go to a quack thinking they are fine. The late great BB King used to do PSA television spots to remind them to get screened, to monitor, and take shots as directed.
  7. I believe 38 states have enacted "tort reform" on medical malpractice cases by implementing damage award caps and other measures. I believe the following states do NOT have any types of caps, either because their state constitution forbids it or because their courts have struck down such limits as unconstitutional: AL,AZ,AR,GA,IL,KY,NH,MO,OH,PA,WA,and WY. There is an excellent law review article on this subject you can locate by google by searching for new York law review unintended consequences of malpractice damages. It was written in 2005 but has an excellent history and discussion of how it evolved and what the effects have been. It is free to download from the NYU Law Review site. There are in fact bad apples in every occupation and profession. There is outright fraud and mistreatment as in the case of the doctor the subject of this post. There are also people who were once great but for whatever reason have become incompetent and should not be practicing, or sometimes, as with any human endeavor, there arr people make mistakes that are found to be below a certain standard. Unfortunately, in medicine, such mistakes can be catastrophic. But giving people chemo for the treatment of a form of carcinoma they didn't even have is beyond the pale. Travis
  8. It is an imaginary conveyor belt. The coefficient if friction of the bearings is all that matters, the contact point/patch of the tires are irrelevant because the coefficient of the bearings/wheels is significantly less than the tires, just as it is with every automobile. The contact point of the tires would only be relevant if it were an exercise in braking, which it isn't. The thrust generated by the propeller acts on the plane every bit the same as attaching a cable to the front of a vehicle in neutral and pulling it with a winch. Both are pulling the vehicle in a horizontal direction from a source independent of the treadmill. The fact that one is generating pull from a fixed point, and the other is oulling through a fluid does not matter, they pull forward, accelerate, and do so regardless if the speed of the treadmill.
  9. It is only in our "art" movie theaters here in Austin, one showing. I was kind of surprised,
  10. Where was that? Best I have ever seen, almost too good. Is it real?

  16. Correct. Now, however, add a jet-pack to your back and give it some thrust. Then, what happens? Here are a few examples.
  17. A person on a treadmill doesn't move forward relative to the tread and therefore doesn't feel air movement across their face. They run in a fixed place. Their mode of propulsion is directly linked to the tread. With the hypothetical, a treadmill long enough for an airplane to achieve flight, with propulsion independant of the tread, will begin to move down the tread, accelarate, and take off. If the airplane has a normal takeoff length of 500 feet, it will require a tread 510 feet long (usable length, topside) and it will accelerate down the tread and take off just slighty over 500 feet down the tread. If it has a normal take off length 2000 feet, it wilo require a tread of 2010 feet, and it will in fact begin to fly just over 2000 feet from the starting point on the tread. The tread doesn't change anything about the length required to take off. It doesn't shorten it, and it doesn't extend it by but a foot or two. Super-high power to weight ratio, short wings, long wings, is all irrelevant. Whatever that plane's normal takeoff length off a normal runway will be nearly identical on a tread. It can be a man powered Gossamer Albertross, a stunt plane like a Pitts Special, a 747. If the tread is longer than the normal takeoff length for that particular configuration. This is why the initial inquiry is whether the plane will move forward or not. If it stays stationary like a car or a person does on a treadmill, it would never fly. But an airplane, or any vehicle, with free spinning wheels AND a means of thrust independent of the treadmill, such as a propeller or jet propulsion, will move forward down along the length of the tread. The demo in the you tube video can be done with any type if RC model you want, if it will move forward on the ground, it will m8ve forward on the treadmill. Then it only becomes a question if you can find a long enough treadmill.
  18. I hope you're not assuming the force generated by the a fixed position winch system is in anyway similar to the force exerted by the prop / turbine / squirrel powered engine. The plane's engine is directly connected to, and part of the plane. The winch is not part of the plane, since one end of that system is (either the winches motor or the cable end) and must be fixed or stationary...... UNLESS the force acting on your cable is due to the conveyors' movement (this concept might be interesting, but I doubt it's where you were going). And I'm sorry to inform you that there's nothing hypothetical about the conveyor supporting the plane. The weight of the plane is directly supported by the conveyor, same your house is directly supported by the foundation system. There's nothing remotely complicated about the concept of friction for this problem, and it is a constant value for both conditions, i.e. at the contact patch and at the bearings. It could be argued that friction acting on the bearings is not constant, but I don't think anyone is interested in getting that deep into the subject, besides, the change would be marginal. There are other forces at work, but I think we can ignore all of them since they are independent and of the conveyor system. Good luck with the youtube videos. Ditch the cable and winch from the car. Disconnect driveshaft from rear differential. Mount propeller on front of car, get power to it from engine in whichever way you chose, and vehicle will move forward from fixed point as you apply power. The belt can go in reverse at the same speed as the car, twice the speed of the car, whatever. The thrust of the propeller moves the car forward towards the end of the conveyor belt because the wheels are free spinning. Put a skateboard on the same conveyor belt, stand on skateboard, strap a large industrial fan on your back, flip it on and you will move forward regardless of the rearward speed of the conveyor belt/treadmill. Get a swamp boat, air driven, mount 4 free spinning wheels on the bottom of it, put it on conveyor belt or giant treadmill, it will move forward regardless of the rearward speed of the tread, same speed as forward movement, 2X, 3X. It will move forward and accelerate as if no treadmill is there. If the vehicle happens to have wings, and the treadmill is longer than the minimum take off length for that particular configuration, it will, in fact, fly. Travis

  20. Here is a guy who figured out a way to demonstrate the friction of the wheels. As you can see the conveyor belt supports the plane, it supports it on initial roll, and supports it as it accelerates up to take off speed, V1.
  21. Nope, not at all. But it is the simplest analogy to use for explaining why it won't fly. Why don't you explain how friction decreases with the rotational speed of the wheels. If you do the math, correctly at least, you'll find out that it doesn't. Not-at-all. Questions: For the given problem, please answer the following, 1.) Is the conveyor necessary to support the plane while it remains stationary? 2.) Does the conveyor support the plane during initial roll? 3.) Does the conveyor support the plane at forward airspeeds less than the design takeoff speed? 4.) You're wrong if your response is "No" to any of the above. You're right, the design of the plane is completely unaffected by the presence of the conveyor. The conveyor only affects the planes ability to gain forward airspeed, relative to the mechanical runway that supports it. It is no different than a car on a conveyor belt and is pulled by a cable while in neutral. The hypothetical assumes it supports the airplane.
  22. The conveyor belt has no effect on being able to fly, one way or the other. It neither aids or hinders the plane's ability to take off.
  23. I am really bummed. I was heart broken when he and Al Davis got into it over money. They trashed each othwr in the media. He was an awesome player. All would seem lost in a game and them he would go deep and Fred would make some unbelievable catch and George would kick the extra point. Thanks for the memories, RIP
