  1. Riddle me this, Batman . Does anyone think that a switching power supply would benefit a DAC, or is that a standard feature now? In lab, we used small, lightweight transformers, switched on and off by a transistor 28,000 times per second. It made for an incredibly smooth DC, even before filtering. The higher frequency eliminate 60Hz passing through the circuit. These compact supplies are much more tolerant of mains drops. We typically saw voltage had to dip 60% before before the quality of the DC failed. General purpose switch-mode power supplies are not designed for high current, but it seems that if you needed rock solid DC below one amp, these are the most efficient supply.
  2. I can't believe there is someone else in the world who owned a JBL 380!! I still have mine, had it re-coned about 3 years ago. I also purchased the specially designed JBL crossover. total cost $555 for both. The Steamroller never sounded so good! Every time I went to Mainz-Kastel, I heard the Infinity Referance Standard cranking out the War of 1812 (every 23 minutes). I forget what amps were powering those towers, but Telarc's digital cannons never cracked once.
  3. This may simply mark my ignorance, but what are the fundamental differances between today's DACs and those made 10 years ago (I'm not talking about a DACMAN)? Burr-Brown was making DSPs 10 years ago, they just didn't have the higher bit places. Would the average stereo buff hear a differance between mid-range DACs, separated by a generation?
  4. Borrow the technology of Cesium 133 with an excitation of 9,192,631,770 cps. It would use the excitation rate of 9 billion-plus cycles per second applied to diamond molecule chain in a vacuum chamber to create super heated plasma conduit. Just like electro-surgery knives are blunt, but can cut with focused RF energy, a shaped plasma arc would be able to cut through most items. not so much a light sabre, but an energy saber. I am sure you could look at with an ND filter, tho
  5. I purchased my Synergy speakers for two reasons: great sound at a great price. To my ears, they were the best sounding bookshelf speakers I had heard in 20 years. Recently, my home was vandalized, and of all the items taken, my Klipsch speakers are the most missed. I plan on replacing them with a something from the Referance series. In my experience, Mr. Phillips' statement concerning the Synergy line is right on target. ---------------- On 7/2/2004 3:08:17 PM Stephen Phillips wrote: Our Synergy line is designed for customers who desire excellent performance at a value price. Our Reference products make up our premium line, designed and engineered with the most expensive materials for consumers that demand the utmost performance, and are willing to pay a slight premium to achieve that additional performance. Klipsch offers a product line for most, if not all bugets. ----------------
  6. I think you were right to trust your ears. When you say the bass was weak, do you mean to say that it was weak compared to what you have now, or was the bass weak compared to other Heresys? We all know that the 'horn vs cone' is going to produce a bright midrange, but I've never known Heresys to be lacking in the low end. There might have been something amiss with that system which the speakers were simply allowing you to hear.
  7. The year that Mr. Klipsch came to Ramstein AB was either late 1984 or 85. I had arrived on station in July of 84, but it took some time for me to meet the wife of a co-worker who was an employee at the main BX. She worked in the stereo department, so she told her husband, he told me, etc. There were more than 100 customers lined up to see Mr. Klipsch, he never complained about being surrounded by a horde.
  8. I apologize. The button hidden under Mr. Klipsch's collar, the one he flashed from time-to-time in response to detractors (or possibly, sales reps), had one descriptive term boldly emblazoned upon it. It said simply, "Bull****" .
  9. I once met the Man at Ramstein AB, Germany, during a massive product promotion. He was personally signing every pair of speakers purchased by military members at the base exchange. He wore a button under his shirt-collar, that he could flash at a moment's notice. At the time I was a lowly mesquito-winger that couldn't afford to purchase a pair of Heresys, but Mr. Klipsch didn't hold that against me. He answered all the questions, but had one special message that he held in reserve for 'smart' folks. That message was printed on the button. I may not have had the money to earn his signature that day, but I did witness the button in action, and to this day I smile about it when I think about Klipsch speakers. Rest In Pease, Mr. Klipsch.
  10. Thank you Bill H. These appear to be exactly what I am looking for. BTW, How is that Creek amp? I once auditioned their preamp, it was very quiet, and allowed me to hear new detail. If I had not had previous repair-access difficulties with British products, I might have purchased it.
  11. Thank you for the reply. I have been searching around for replacements, but have not seen any (complete) KSB 3.1 series for sale. Some have offered their SB for sale, but not their KSB. To me, this speaks volumes of the quality of sound from these small cabinets. I wonder if someone from Klipsch would list the 'suitable sub' for the KSBs.
  12. I absolutely loved my KSB 3.1s. I ran them on a Crown DC150 amp for many years, and their full range response was so impressive, that I rarely bothered to run my JBL 15" subwoofer along with them. It wasn't needed. A jerk broke in and stole them, along with other light weight components of my system. What couldn't be carried away, was my crown amp and sub cabinet. I really miss the clean, detailed, full range sound of my 3.1s. They were the biggest sounding small speakers I had ever owned, and I would like to replace them with a similar product. What is available to replace them, with similar sound, size, and price? Thank you
