  1. Give this a look and see what you think. http://www.thesoundbroker.com/CHAIRS.htm Soundbroker is a forum member - so nice to thow him some business if they fit your needs. I do not currently have these seats, nor have I seen them in person, but it looks promising to me based on looking in my local area. Please post back with your other thoughts and options as I too am looking for seats as my room finishes off.
  2. acoustical panels are high on my list, but to date I have not looked into them at all. What is the ball park of pricing for what you did in your room? BTW I agree with the others great looking room - Very nice!
  3. Ha ha >>who cares about a bulb when you have a movie screen for a tv.how cool is that? Well said, too funny, that should be your new signature. I like my projector so much right now I would gladly buy a bulb a month. I also agree on the light issue. I have 8 recessed lights that I use in the room when it is not in "Theater Mode" and sconces with a dimmer for movie veiwing. Even with all the lights on and doors opened to other rooms is is still viewable by my standards.
  4. My $0.02, if you are trying to make it "theater like" then you want the screen as big as you can properly view it. A 40/50/60 inch CRT/RPTV/Plasma seems big when you are used to viewing a 35 inch TV but even on the small side you can have a 70 inch front projection screen. A lot of factors come into play. Lighting is for sure a big one. CRTs and Plasmas are going to look a lot better in a brightly lit room but again if you are going for the theater experience how is every commercial theater set up? As a windowless room that is dimly lit with a projector in the back and a huge screen in the front. I just completed my HT with a 2:35 to 1 screen and could not be happier, but it is in my basement and I can control all the light. Currently I am dragging my satellite receiver back and forth between the HT and my bedroom because I have not gotten around to getting another one. I have watched a fair amount of TV as well as several movies and concert DVDs. I tell ya from my point of view I cant see having anything else in my dedicated room. That said, I am not going to stop using my standard CRT TV in my living room. It is just not practical to tote my corn flakes down a flight of stairs to watch 10 minutes of the Today Show in the morning when I am getting ready for work. But I do see my self watching a show like The West Wing which I regularly do anyway on my projector. One because they broadcast it in HD and the sound is good and two because like you said you dont want to have something you only use once in a while. Finally bulb life might have to factor into your cost equation if you plan on using the projector a ton. If you watched roughly 5.5 hours of projector content a day you would go through a bulb a year. At 200 dollars or more it might add up. Personally I easily waste 200 bucks a year on worse things related to Audio/Video so I dont think a bulb a year is unreasonable and I doubt you would watch 5.5 hours of projected TV ever day for 365 days.
  5. dblue, very nice...great picture on the tv. How does the X-Box look when it is nice and big?
  6. Wow, cool thanks for the quick reply. I will give him a shout.
  7. Anyone out there live at all close to Vestal, New York (Binghamton) that would be willing to give a set of Fortes a listen and a quick look over? I see a sort of beat up pair on ebay with no risers and scuffed up wood. Makes me think they might be abused, but if not I would love to give them a home between my Chorus fronts and Forte II rears in a 6.1 set up. I have been kicking around the idea of a veneer job and this might fit the bill. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5752560397&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT If anyone runs into a similar situation in the Baltimore, MD area I will give any Klipsch speaker a look and a listen for you. Thanks, Rich
  8. Hey flannj welcome! I have spent the last few months building out my basement and just last weekend watched my first movie in the mostly finished room with my new electronics. I have a very similar set up to you with Chorus/Academy/Chorus up front. During the rough construction I would drag my equipment back into the room and test it in various configurations trying mixes of Chorus, Academy, Forte, and Heresy. My favorite so far was Chorus/Forte/Chorus up front, so I think long term I will end up there or if the right set up circumstances pop up three Choruses up front (anyone out there have a chorus or two they are looking to rid themselves of). At any rate I think you will be in great shape to start out with your current line up of Klipsch speakers. As for the electronics I have been a long time Carver fan when coupled to what ever Klipsch speakers I had at the time. Since I already had separate Carver amps and preamp I went with a Sunfire Theater Grand IV. I would give this a long hard look if you are at all considering Sunfire. I absolutely love it. Build quality is great, the look fit and finish are first rate, very well laid out, simple to use and oh yea by the way I think it sounds fantastic. I also picked up a new DVD player to go with the TGIV. I went with a Denon 3910. So far I am very happy with it. I cant help you out much in the TV department I went with a projector and screen. If you have that option (reasonable light control, etc.) give that some thought. One word of advice, take you time and consider all your options during the construction. I went back and forth between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1. The room gets a lot smaller as the framing/drywall/trim/carpet/furniture works its way in. I did wire for 7.1 just because you never know and it is a lot easier now then later. Good luck, Rich
  9. Edwardre, Sorry I did not see this post earlier as I was working on my room all weekend. Too bad you did not get that speaker. I am 99.999% sure that was one of the 3 Academys I recently bought as a set back in December. Even with professional packing it was damaged in shipping. That corner was smashed upbut that was the only problem. The speaker sounded fine. I paid 1800 for all three and UPS was very responsive at inspecting the package and admitting fault. The seller worked with UPS to get the refund and I got 100% of my purchase price back. That is, I got 600 of the 1800 bucks back in my paypal account through a refund. No fees or anything taken. I would have rather had 300 bucks and the damaged speakerbut that was not an option from UPSs standpoint. I am sure it is my speaker because UPS picked it up at my house as part of the claim. It was going back to AZ I noticedand this was sold in AZ. It is also the same corner that was damaged, and it did not have the Klipsch badge on the grill. Not sure why it left my house without the badge as it had it when I received itwe will call that payment for my pain and suffering. I was so worried that from an insurance stand point UPS would just write the thing off and it would end up in a landfill that I contemplated keeping the cross over and speakers out of the box. My thinking was that there had to be a forum member out there that could build a cabinet for it and that would give one more person a coveted Academy. UPS had requested the Speaker Cabinet to return in order to process the claim. The devil inside of me said that all they wanted was the speaker cabinet so I was technically not in the wrong. In the end I knew that was really not right, so I sent the whole thing back. I am just happy that somebody got a good deal and that the darn thing did not go to waste since they are in such high demand. So, did a forum member beat you out? Come on guys fess upwho got it?
  10. Exactly my point above. If you have a projector and screen set up then space is not an issue, if you have a more standard TV, they a floor standing speaker complicates things. Forte/Quartet plus making it fit might cost more then an academy in furniture or agravation. Good luck, Rich
  11. I have used an academy with my Forte IIs since purchased new. It is a fantastic center channel. If space is not an issue another Forte or Quartet would work nicely. That said if you dont have the room or want that look, then I personally would bite the bullet and seek out an academy. Yea it is ludicrous to pay 500-700 dollars for a speaker that cost 400 over 10 years ago, but then lots of people are paying that so it has to tell you something right? In the grand scheme of things is several hundred dollars really a show stopper? How much do you have in cables, DVDs, racks/furniture, etc.? What price can you put on the enjoyment you get out of watching movies at home? If you are getting by with your current set up then that is great, just keep an eye out for an academy close to you or in the finish you want and wait it out. People pay 700+ for them, but I have also seen nice ones go for under 300. There is a forum member here (Frzninvt ) selling his black one for 500 and from what I can tell he is an outstanding community forum member. So at the very least the purchase would give you a higher comfort level then blindly buying from a unknown entity on ebay. FWIW I recently paid 1800 for three Academys. That price included fantastic professional shipping from ½ way across the country (over $150). Typically you are going to pay shipping/insurance on top of they buying price so I thought the convenience of getting them all in one shot for roughly 550 each (1800-150 shipping) was fair for both parties. My plan was to use those three plus my one I have had forever and use all 4 in a 7.1 set up with Chours/Forte/Chours up front. That is how much I like the Academy. Room size shrunk as things came together and I ended up with 6.1 not 7.1 So I will keep my original one in my more mundane TV area and go with Chorus/Academy/Chorus up front and Forte/Academy/Forte in the rear of my dedicated HT. Sorry for the long winded rantbut I think it helps illustrate at least my passion for that particular speaker. Yes I think it is that good.
  12. Excellent idea no the power strips, switched and unswitched is a very nice to have as well. Thanks a ton!
  13. Based on reading other threads on here I purchased a Furman, rack mountable power conditioner. http://www.furmansound.com/pro/pwr_cond_seq/cond/Series%202.a.htm I ran a dedicated 20 amp line to my rack of equipment where the Furman now plugs into. I also have romex run back form my projector mount and sub power outlet which in effect makes an extension cord back to the Furman conditioner. This gives me every component running off of that single 20 amp circuit with no other items such as lights, outlets (other then sub), vacuum cleaner, popcorn maker, etc. running off of that circuit to cause issues. My problem is that I am short two outlets on the Furman to give each piece of equipment its own power source. Is it safe and reasonable to utilize the outlets, switched or unswitched, on the back of my pre amp? My gut tells me that if the preamp is plugged into the conditioner and the other items are plugged into the preamp all should be well. However, I am no electrical engineer so I could be totally off the mark. So what is the deal, do I need to drop another $250+ dollars on a second Furman set up or is utilizing the preamps outlets ok? Thanks, Rich
  14. tigerwoodKhorns, Yea I am looking for a Walnut one first but would consider an Oak. I don't really need another one and am thinking of trying to put some new veneer on my black one. A while back I had a potential trade working as a guy here had a walnut academy but had black chorus or fortes so the black Academy would have worked for him, but that did not work out. I have my original box and packing and would send mine out for inspection first so the other guy does not go without a speaker. I would sell my black one if I could come to terms with you...how much you want?
  15. I gave this one some thought but I'm gonna pass. BIN of 400. My trade off of paying your shipping and sending you my Black one first is still good if anyone out there has a Walnut or Oak. If your looking at this one on ebay be sure and give the pic of the back a long look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5750337878 No interest in the auction on my part, just passing on info.
  16. Thanks for the info on the right name for the parts, Michael. I got the serial numbers they are 139X407 and 139X544
  17. Heading home, will get you the serial numbers soon. I do recall an X in the middle of the numbers and to clear things up the mids were/are mounted from the back. The new replacement horns are plastic 701s and would not fit. I simply removed the "junk" (please tell me correct terms for said junk) on the back of the horn with 4 screws and bolted the new junk on. Metal horns had metal cone thingie and other parts seperate, plastic ones seemed to have that all built in one piece of the plastic. I now have metal horns and associated cone/etc. with auction "junk" mounted on them. Same size and bolt pattern. Are my one good and one bad old drivers worth anything? Are the plastic horns worth anything? Thanks for the info and education...I really appreciate it. Rich
  18. In general I am happy with them. They sound a heck of a lot better then they did with the broken magnet. I am just thinking the sound engineers at Klipsch know a thing or two more then me and maybe I should have found the correct replacement parts My biggest concern is that there might be some matching going on between a particular speaker set and the crossover. But then I don't know much about the science of speakers, just like to listen to the music.
  19. I have swapped out my K52s in my heresy for K53s. Have I done anything wrong or bad? Original post was to the technical board. Can you all give this a read and let me know what you think? http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=61019&pageNo=1&num=30&sessionID={1B1A039D-3088-4651-B56C-517211A55B04} Many, many thanks, Rich
  20. Thanks for the quick reply. I cant really say if I like them better. I never heard them correctly before. I purchased form a forum member who said they were working fine when he shipped them. I guess the magnet got jarred loose in transit as the one sounded terrible as soon as I hooked it up. I did have a brief back and forth with Bob C. but he did not have the right diaphragm for me. Very nice and helpful guy, given my lack of knowledge about all things internal to a speaker. I was in the process of finishing up my HT when I bought them, so naturally I was anxious to round out my line up. Probably should have taken more time in getting them done right, but I read so much about modifying various speakers with different crossovers and the like figured the worse that could happen was that I would be out my time and money. I gave them a good work out with 2 channel music over the weekend and was quite happy. Then put my Chorus back in place and thought, hmmmm maybe these Heresys are just not quite right. I know it is not reasonable to expect the same sound out of two totally different speakers, but I just melted when I heard my Chorus hooked back up. The heresys really rock for such a small package and think they will find a place in my HT for surrounds or possible 2 channel in a different room. Just second guessing my decision to change them from original and wondering if I did anything to help or hurt the sound.
  21. Hey everyone, I typically hang out in the HT form but figured here was a better place for this question. I have an older pair of heresys that had a bad for lack of a better term midrange. It sounded like a wet blanket was over the speaker. Tweeter and woofer sounded fine as did all three pieces of the other speaker. I opened it up to look inside and found the magnet was actually loose from the rest of thedriver, I think you call it that. As you can tell I am not the most adept at the innards of a speaker. Anyway the horn attaches to the thing that has tightly wound wires in it and concave shape. I can see these wires only because the magnet is unglued. I know there is a diaphragm somewhere in the mix so maybe that is it. Back to the problem and my fix. The magnet came unglued from the rest of the contraption that was bolted to the horn. Being magnetic it was very hard to get it perfectly centered while using some A/B epoxy to try and put it back in place. Eventually this worked but still the sound was less then stellar. So I went looking for another midrange. I could not find any that matched my particular type. K52H and 575216 was in blue ink on the back of the magnet. I saw and purchased these on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5742300955&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT Thinking that if I got two of the same type I could swap them both out and all should be well in Heresy land. The look of the driver was identical to mine, not like some I have seen was a gray housing around it. So I get the replacements and the horns wont bolt into the cabinet. The actual horn is a tad larger and wont fit between the woofer and tweeter. Also of note these new horns are some sort of plastic and say 701. My originals are heavy, metal, and say 700. So to make it all work I unbolted the stuff and swapped it out. I now have my newly purchased good stuff bolted to my old metal horns. It sounds decent to memuch better then the original one with loose magnet. Also of interest is that on my original set up there were all sorts of separate things once unbolted like a cone shaped gizmo and cork gaskets. The plastic k53-R versions were much more one-piece-ish. So have I Frankenstein-ed my speakers? Are the purists crawling in their skin? Do I have any concerns for the full range of sound? Are different components meant to work all as one and I am now screwed? Is one horn material preferred over another? For what it is worth the crossovers say E on them in red, but then there is a number 2 stamped on them (not in red but stamped into the metal plate). I have seen mention of E2 crossovers and seen them on ebay that are all red. Maybe I have a heresy set that was made during some transition period??? I probably should have asked these questions before purchase but what is done is done. I bet serial numbers would help; I will post them later as I am not where the speakers are right now. Sorry for the long rambling post and lack of technical vocabulary. Please let me know any and all thoughts on this. Thanks a ton, Rich
  22. Audio Flynn, What is the model number
  23. Conrwalls are the one older Klipsch speaker that I have never heard. Currently I have Chorus/Forte II/Acadaemy/Heresy/Heresy II so I dont really see a need for thembut you never know. Anyway, based on this guys auction requirements I think he might be limiting his buyers. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61378&item=5749395433&rd=1 I dont really need themnot even sure if I want them, but if I have the chance to snag them at a good price what is that price? The reason I ask is that my parents live about 15 minutes from that city and they will be traveling to my neck of the woods (Baltimore, MD) soon, so I could have door to door delivery with caring hands for free!
  24. Thanks Russ You say "if you have a choice - use the balanced connectors (XLR)" Are you saying that in a general sense: Given the choice between XLR to XLR and RCA to RCA choose the balanced connectors or are you saying that in my particular set up use the balanced output from my Pre/Pro to my amps even though I would need custom cables built to go XLR on the Pre/Pro side to RCA on the Amps? As far as I am concerned it would be a no brainier to go XLR to XLR if I in fact had that option, because what the heck I already have a fair amount of money in the darn system, what is a few more cables. But since I don't have the luxury of XRL on the amps, I am wondering if I lose the benefit of "Balanced Outputs" with the RCA termination end of the cable. In which case I am just wasting my money on a stronger connection. Not trying to split hairs here just wanting to get a full understanding.
  25. I have a new pre/pro on the way but still have my three older 2 channel amps. I was wondering if there is any sonic benefit in getting interconnects with XLR connections on one end and RCAs on the other. Most of what I have been able to dig up says that the benefits of XLR cables are noise reduction, ruggedness, and a connection that wont get yanked out. If I dont have any noise issues (at least I dont think I do) is there any reason to go with new cables? Also what it meant by the term Balanced as it relates to processors with balanced outputs? Thanks, Rich
