  1. hello cant help myself. "jdm" YOU DO KNOW THIS WAS A ROCK CONCERT RIGHT i wont assume you have been to a concert as your comment makes no sense. they should turn down the volume? what about the poor souls at the back of the line that get the cheap seats, or the little dude that cant push his way to the front to listen and watch, ther is a forgotten bit of intellect in this country and others its called COMMON SENSE, let me say thaat again COMMON SENSE, get the picture stop whineing and blameing everybody else on the planet for your ignorance you bought your ticket at free will and chose to stand close enough to the sound system to have it blasting in your ear i can say from experience and a fair amount of hearing loss taht if you have those problems after a concert you knew the music was loud because it HURTS WHEN YOU ARE THERE LISTENING AT THAT LEVEL. the problem today with all these lawsuits is way to many bleeding hearts. ooooh we feel your pain, it has to be somebody elses fault, lets make them pay because you were to DUMP to plug your ears or move away from the source in my day and upbringing that is called ignorance and you dont get paid for it, you suffer for it and are supposed to learn from it. not trying to offend anyone just hate to hear this type trype Joe
  2. well she finally arrived yesterday and aftera marathon session i can say it beats my phase linear 2000 pretty handily, volume is infinately louder, sound is much clearer, i have heard that tubes sound muddy? not so with this pre-amp, listened to some elo, joe walsh the confessor, even some mike auldridge dobro on lp, and some queen and clapton unplugged on the cd, everything was much clearer and the volume on the cds is unbeleiveable cant take the knob past the 7 oclock posistion, for albums the volume can go around the 9 oclock and be at a decent level, i have to admit i didnt find the sound any more mellow as is always touted with tubes, just cleaner and LOUDER all in all i would say this is a great little pre for the money and if your on a budget like me (check to check) you wont be dissapointed Joe
  3. i have my system set up as follows tha 2 phase linear 400 amps both run into the vtp101, and each amp supplies a set of speakers one amp to the heresys, the other amp to the cornwalls, who is george and does he sell these to just anyone or only if you buy his gear, how about a contact#, web address, or phisical there are no gain controls on the pre just a mute and that cuts the sound completely thanks Joe
  4. yes yes yes, finally shows up, but sat out in the cold a couple hours waiting on me to get home(crap!!! now i have to let it set and come to temp, before hooking it up), OK thats done and all hooked up put in a cd "OUCH THATS LOUD" this thing really makes a HUGE difference in volume i mean jesus this gets loud FAST, with a cd in turn the volume knob to almost 7 oclock(3 little clicks)and get out the ear plugs what a difference. put on an album and the sound is SWEET (joe walsh confessor) the needles on my vu meters dont even move at a normal volume level and just 2 more clicks on that knob its louder than my ears can take, vu meters barley moveing have 2 solid state amps(phase linear 400 200wpc) hooked up to the sound valve(tube) pre-amp, and the change in volume is incrediable, from my solid state pre(phase 2000)the sound seems cleaner but i havent seen the more mellow sound i keep reading about or does that just come with tube amps, it would be hard to beat this sound with ss amps and a tube pre(IMO), the only problem i see is theres no inbetween its either loud or to soft, any one know of a way to solve this at 3 clicks on the volume knob its just a little low for my tastes but 1 more click and its way to LOUD, thanks Joe
  5. i recently rediscovered vinyl myself, i have been buy crazy with album collections to the point of 1500 albums now, i had approx 300 cd's before i started vinyl again and i will say except for a very few cd's i have i listen to vinyl more, on my klipsch corns and heresy's the vinyl just sounds better hands down, i use a fairly high quality cd player(IMO) and with my current setup i like the vinyl better, not to mention you can get a ton of the older music at a huge saveings over the cost of cd's, a guy in jersey just had 900 albums up for sale 399.00, try to find that with cd's
  6. never stop trying to improve thats my motto, i plan on keeping my thorens, it has a great sound but i thought i might be missing something so i found this little gem and decided i really cant lose, as they bring good $ on the bay, i have yet to receive my tube pre-amp, supposed to be here tomarrow, getting all fidgity cant wait to hear that sound, the pat 4 was a bust but the seller was a good fella in the end as he gave me a refund(and didnt want the pre back) so tomarrow i will get to try my FIRST TUBE EXPERIENCE, and see what that is like if all is well i will donate the pat-4 to the forum member that said they could fix it, sell my phase linear 2000 crapper and try to be a happy camper for at least a day, of course you know next to go will probably be my 2 mint phase linear 400 amps both with walnut cases and look awsome, and look into a couple tube amps, then the real fun starts trying to get all the info i will need on that to hook up my 4 klipsch(2 corns, 2 heresy's) and run that safely without blowing the speaks im kinda timid when it comes to tubes as i heard if a tube melts down it can take everything with it> anyway onward and upward for me thanks for the reply Joe
  7. hello again was looking for some good quality opinions or reviews for the dual cs 5000 turntable cant seen to find alot about it on the net, i did find an old review from mid 80's when it was new being compared to the rega 3, kind of hoping to find an opinion from an ouner or someone that has heard the TT, i know dual has a decent history but supposed to be with only certain models, also wondering about a good cartridge to compliment this table, i already bought the table for about 150.00 less than the average on ebay, and these seem to have a following as they are bid as high as 550.00 on ebay all info appreciated thanks Joe
  8. hello thanks for the advice it is definately the pre-amp, got a connection to fix it though on here so all is good Joe
  9. hello bought a used dyna pas 4 under the guise of works great,(untill you hook it up that is) i am not an electronics type guy and am looking to see if anyone on here has an interest in trying to get this right it emits a loud buzzing or humming noise as soon as the amps are turned on and if you turn on a source it gets worse and the sound is distorted, i would like to maybe fix it but dont want to put a ton of cash into it, if it is a major fix i will donate it to someone that likes to play with these for shipping costs any takers? Joe
  10. hello and thanks for all the advice i found a stanton 681 EEE, nos for 99.00 does that sound like a good deal i have tried cleaning a couple albums and stilli seem to get a lot of static background noise, idont have the tools to try the set up for the tone arm as described in the analog dept. i do have a few audiophile albums and they sound tons better but have minimal background noise to them also i am hopeing the cartridge is a big part of my problems as i have no way of knowing how old or worn it is thanks to all Joe
  11. hey if you guys are seriously looking for albums 70's rock type i probably have 200 doubles and triples examples are springsteen, seager, j. browne, starship, kinks etc..., i have a collection of about 1500 alnums total anything you are seriously looking for let me know if i have a bouble i will hook you up with it most of my collection has mint vinyl, but some of the covers are worn, frayed spine etc... lets get into a swap here Joe
  12. sounds like i scored a good deal, i will up date you when i get the thing and i hope it does all i have heard it will, i did read a couple reviews that said changeing the tubes for better ones would give better sound how would a person go about finding the right tubes and buying them(first piece of tube gear i have ever bought thanks for all the info Joe
  13. hello randy thanks for the advice , i ouned a 2002 sportster, that i completely customized myself, the only things still stock were the trans and the frame, i have since sold that and bought a 1975 flh shovelhead that is in about 300 pieces right now Joe
  14. hello it is aa akai gx 255, in pristine condition and i routed the signal thru my pre-amp as you would say any cassette deck, (in to out and vice versa) the manual i got with the deck is an original but it is kind of sketchy on how the connections are to be, the diagram is unclear Joe
  15. good to know about the alcahol at parts stores, and i do appreciate the info Joe
  16. lynnm very informative i appreciate the formula, and will deffinately try it, i read a thread about useing a cleaning wipe called "swipes" just to wipe the lp lightly before play and it is supposed to be electrostatically charged and attract all the dust etc away from the album, think i will try and mix a gallon of the formula first though, the nitty gritty should work with about any formula i would think as it is a manual use and the vacume on it is very strong should suck any cleaners right off there thanks for the help Joe
  17. hello i am currently running 2 phase linear 400 amps with my cornwalls, and heresy's and have no complaints about the amps them selves , the pre-amps on the other hand seem to be prone to problems i have had 3 of the model 4000 series 1 pre-amps all had problems, and i now have a phase linear 2000 series 1 pre-amp that has just developed problems( just snagged a tube ,sound valves vtp101i on ebay) hopeing that does a much better job on the pre end of things, as far as the amps running hot with klipsch speakers its not gonna happen, i unhooked my fans after i got my klipsch, and i dont get any hom or hiss at all out of my amps, but i do get that little pop when i shut the system off but that could have something to do with the pre-amp just chimeing in Joe
  18. anyone on here have any first hand knowledge with this pre-amp, i just scored one on ebay and was wondering if anyone has any opinions as to its sound, audio review gives it a decent review but another opinion cant hurt Joe
  19. hello rick i forgot to say i have the older stanton model 681,(no letters after it) its a fairly nice rig, but it does seem to give me a fair amount of background noise, however i attribute alot of the noise to the albums themselves i just got a nitty gritty cleaning machine, but have yet to get a cleaning solvent, and i am trying to find a way to reduce the static build up also any suggestions on that thanks again Joe
  20. rick thanks for the information i appreciate it, lynnm: i am not trying to be rude or otherwise and i dont recall another time of giving a curt response, i agree this is a forum that helps a great deal and i actually like this site very much, i appreciate the help i receive here, i guess i took your first response the wrong way it just seemed to me that the response was more on showing ones superiority over me, instead of offering helpful advice like your 2nd response, i will admit i get a little hot when i feel i am being rediculed or looked down on for a lack of knowledge(especially when i am asking ? to try and improve my knowledge) so if i misread your intent i apolagize for my curt response Joe
  21. ok thanks for that, but it doesnt address the questions, do you have any knowledge of the differences or just wanted to correct me Joe
  22. hello i recently bought a reel to reel, and upon recording from my phono i i set the recorder to record in stereo and all the meters show it recording on all tracks but upon playback i lose sound on 1 of the 4 speakers, however if i play a prerecorded tape i get sound from all speakers, also when i record from my cd i get sound on all speaks upon playback, im thinking i have a problem with my pre-amp routing the signal from the phono to the tape any ideas? thanks Joe
  23. hello again guys i am somewhat new to tt use but have a vast collection of vinyl(1500 albums), am fairly happy with my thorens 160 with a stanton 681 cartridge/stylus, but have been seeing the mm, or mc cartridges for sale and am wondering what is the better style the mm, or the mc type cartridge, i realize i would have to have a pre amp that would allow use of 1 or the other, (or both), at present my pre-amp will only allow use of the mc, but i am switching my pre-amp in the near future and want to get the best sound possiable, any suggestions on a good quality set-up would be appreciated, also a little information on the difference between the 2 types of cartridges and the benefits of each, i figure a budget for a new cartridge around 100 to 150.00 thanks Joe
  24. hello i have been wanting to try tube gear and now that my pre-amp has taken a crap on me i guess its time to try for the change, i have 2 phase linear 400, amps 200wpc, and i want to keep them both hooked up i need a good recomendation for a pre-amp tube type that can run both my amps (bi-ampable) i figure i will have about 1000 maybe 1500 to spend after i unload some more stuff, i am driveing cornwalls and heresy's i also need the preamp to be able to handle 2 tape decks, a cd, a tuner, and a phono, (would like it to handle 2, but 1 will work) thanks Joe
  25. hey the thorens is a very highly sought after piece of equipment, they dont sell on ebay for around 800 to 1000 for no reason it is a very nice turntable although old, it does require a plinth be bought or made, not a big project though, also it does require a good technical set up, but well worth the money you are talking about hell, you could buy and resell and probably triple or more your money, then buy a higher more modern unit. if you dont get it send me an email i would send payment to him immediately for it. point is you cant loose. i dont know anything about your tone arm sorry good luck Joe
