  1. just found that, thanks! also DIY has some neat stuff as well
  2. A little elf tipped me off about getting a set of Grado RS2s for xmas, and as a winter project I'd like to build a decent tube or tube-hybrid headphone amplifier. Any recommendations? Also, getting married in Feb and moving to new digs, time to uproot the Khorns. The new listening room has a better floorplan and will allow me to use the Cornwall II for a center channel. AHHHHH progress. Pete in MI
  3. Sorry I let the ball drop here - I started my new job and it's been a real whirlwind. The previous director was relieved of duty so there were tons of fires to put out. I can't even remember what the finish is on the Cornwall II - I'll go home tonight and get the specs and take pictures. It's been sitting alone in the den with a Soundcraftsmen EQ on it for like a year, so I guess it's time to unload some used gear. If I can't score a couple of battered or mismatched Heresy...what is good recommendation in a newer Klipsch set, like the KG-2, etc.? Those seem to be in abundance, but I have a feeling that there's probably a good reason for that. I'm in Michigan. PMH
  4. I just scored a tasty Director's position at a museum, and my new office is HUGE. 23x30' huge. I've normally kept my music listening as a home activity with the Khorns and Dynaco ST-70 but I think I need some tube warmth at work as well. I've got a second ST-70 and turntable, but need a decent pair of Heresys for a decent price. I don't care much about finish - looking in the $200 range if at all possible. There are always some on E-bay but some of those a$$hats seem to think that driving up the shipping cost is an acceptable business practice.... PMH
  5. Last year I purchased a wonderful pair of '69 Klipschorn WO along with a tasty Marantz Model 15 and a single Cornwall II for a center channel. The receiver/preamp were long gone by the time I got there. Anywho - I have a Cornwall II that I can't use as a center channel due to space limitations. I'd like to obtain a single Cornwall II [Or Cornwall I] for my "master bedroom system". If anyone has a singe, or even a pair with one that has been damaged, please let me know. Pete - Michigan stimpy451@gmail.com
  6. Anyone want to sell? I keep watching e*bay auctions go high to people outside the country. Thanks in advance, Pete Bay City, MI Marantz, Klipschorns, Cornwall II, etc.
  7. Here's the idea - I have a set of K-horns and a Cornwall II for a center channel. I am using a Marantz Model 15 for the K-horns which replaced a Model 140 which I still have, along with a Model 14 Marantz for the center channel. I love my setup, but am being lured to the darkside of having more than two channels. I need recommendations on the following: 1. Pre-amplifier/5.1/DTS/digital dolby processor that will play well with my existing amplifiers 2. Side speakers 3. rear sub - do i really even need this? Pete
  8. Track samples here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004RJ6B/qid=1107360936/sr=8-14/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i14_xgl15/102-8833072-1017750?v=glance&s=music&n=507846
  9. Before everyone gets freaked out: Quantegy is slowly ramping production again. Also, there definitely will, we're told, be a new studio quality open reel audio tape manufacturer in Pennsylvania starting in May or early June and maybe even as early as April... Hang in there! They're going to be making very good tape starting with a +6 OL tape which almost everybody should be able to use. This gleaned from usrecordingmedia.com. Pete
  10. never mind, i just bought 28 of them. If anyone needs any pilot bulbs for a Marantz Model 15, I'll hook you up. I have 28 of the world's last remaining 33 bulbs in existence. Pete
  11. Dialco 507-3909, 6.3V, 200MA. Have only found one source for them, and they have a $20 minimum charge... Pete
  12. Wonderful center channel material for an existing pair of K-horns.
  13. Ok, I just posted that like 20 mins ago, and have a few emails concerning the sofa. Yes, it is a Stickley. I got it from Klingmann in Grand Rapids, MI. Stickley is still in business and has a really nice website: http://www.stickley.com/ Mine is the updated model. Very comfy. Sorry for off-topic.
  14. I hit them with BLO last night and fell asleep listening to Hendrix at the Isle of White, woke up with a really bad headache. Killed some brain cells, jst nt sre whch ones. They look dry again. I'm pretty sure I've decided to move to a house with a large open floorplan to accomodate these speakers. Also looking at building my first tube amp. Want to go low buck - thinking along the lines of the 2A3 Bottlehead, but not the kit, definitely want to homebrew. How do class A triode 300Bs do with the k-horn? I love the articles at www.enjoythemusic.com, except that Blackie Pagoda guy's attempt at freeform poetry about Johnny Thunders. Pete
  15. Wondering what year these were made: KCWR 2F592 2F593 WR=walnut raw? Pete 1958 Norton Domiracer
  16. Hrm. You asked, so here it is: Might not be work safe. http://www.daisycutter.net/brains.jpg
  17. What is a better product to treat the wood?
  18. Spent all day Saturday carefully taking the K-horns apart and getting out of the girlfriend's basement. Took the tops and side grills off and carefully wrapped each component in a blanket. I work for a mobility company, so I borrowed a van with a wheelchair lift to make things a little easier. Had to move them myself, so the 14 steps out of the basement were murder with a handtruck. Gave her mom $400 and took the K-horns, 1 Cornwall II, Marantz 15, 14, Sony turntable with Shure SMG and a handful of jazz records. I left my digital camera at work, so I'll have to post pix tomorrow. I've got them set up in my living room about 12' apart. Not the best, but those are the only true corners I have to work with. I set up my Marantz 140, flatlined the EQ on the preamp, put in the Who's "Tommy" CD and let it rip. I about pooped myself. I have always had a Soundcraftsmen EQ in the loop, but it's almost uneeded now if it weren't for some crappier recordings. I really can't describe how good the K-horns sound. I expected to be confronted by the harshness of the squawkers, but it's not that evident. There's enough there that I would consider building the ALK kit. But other than that...flawless and tight. Played a few more choice CDs - "Carmina Burana" being one, and was floored at the wall of sound and definition. I moved around quite a bit and did notice that these definitely have a sweet spot when compared to non-horn speakers. That takes some getting used to - you can literally walk around the room with your eyes closed and hear drastic level changes. My room layout isn't so hot either.... So I decided to piece the taken-apart Marantz 15 together for test run. Bad idea - I had it running for a few minutes and it was throwing some 60 cycle hum, then all of a sudden the peak lamp on the left amp lit and the left K-horn started crackling. I unplugged it but had a good scare. Need to rebuild the 15. The wood on the K-horns is walnut . They soaked up about half a bottle of lemon oil. whooo. Still having trouble getting mysterious moldy spots off - they seem to come off by scratching with a fingernail, but there are so many of them.... P.
  19. Did a quick search on this forum and didn't see any prior posts, so I assume this is a safe topic: I'd like to know what you all consider to be the best-recorded LP/CD for testing your rigs. I'm partial to hard rock and classical, but I really hope nobody mentions the "Carmina Burana" of any orchestra. =) What really gets me going in classic rock is three piece bands with incredible separation and detail, like Cream, Hendrix, oddball studio Bs from the Who like "Water" or the live recording of "Don't Happen That Way At All". Hendrix's Electric Ladyland LP with "If 6 Were 9" is pretty high up there, as is Voodoo Chile . Oooh, I could make a list a mile long. Hopefully someone will turn me on to something else with this thread... Pete K-horns coming Saturday. "You say CarMEENA, I say CarmEYEna, let's call the whole thing Orff."
  20. Tony, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks a bunch. Update on the K-horns -- I pick them up on Saturday. I borrowed a friend's cargo van and a bunch of blankets for the ceremony. Already have the corners cleared in my room! Pete
  21. OK, so here's another question. There is a Cornwall present with a Marantz 14 and the input is labeled "Center". What was the thinking there? I can only guess at where he was pulling the signal from because the preamp is gone. Any ideas?
  22. The Marantz 15 has been disassembled into monoblocs, hoping to dig around down there and find the faceplate but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Keep in mind I'm still not sure if the Klipschorns were partially submerged or not - there is mold line about a foot off the floor on the cabinets. I'll test them with my Marantz 140 but I'm not gonna get my hopes up. If they do function, I can't wait to compare between my Altec-Lansing Stonehenges... BTW, "head unit" = preamp
  23. Grandmother has Alzheimers. And yes, I agree with you 100% about "vulturism". One of my in-laws had an estate sale for his father right after they put him in a nursing home. It's scary how we treat our aged family members. I guess I used the term "inherited" a little loosely. Since I can't plug anything in and there's extensive mold damage from a recent flooding, I offered $500 for the Klipschorns and the Marantz 15. It's all up to them, it's not my family.
  24. So I'm at my girlfriend's grandparent's house last night - she lives there now as her grandfather is dead and her grandmother is in a home. Anyway, in the basement is the remnants of the old boy's setup which includes two HUGE Klipsch corner speakers. The cabs are actually built open in the rear to be placed in room corners. They are probably about 4 ft. tall and must weigh a ton. There was a center channel which I assume is a Cornwall. I didn't get a very good look at them as there was only one lamp in the room. I could barely make out the rear tags on the big units. He was driving them with a pair of Marantz Model 15 monoblocs and had taken the front aluminum plate off for some reason, and the center channel was driven by a single Marantz Model 14. The head had been taken by her cousin, but I'm wondering where he pulled the center channel from. Also a very nice servo Sony turntable. The girlfriend is checking with her mom to see if it's all right for me to inherit this stuff. I've got my fingers crossed but I'm going to have a hard time getting those cabinets up to my listening room.... Any idea what the cabs could be?! Pete in Michigan
