HF sensitivity can be reduced  by reversing the sound's origin  from the rear to the front   , allowing for the room to filter  the HF  prior to reaching the ears   , typically , you would place the speakers at the rear -corners /walls , and as the sound travels  the HF harshness  is partially dispersed in the room and the ears do a lot better .

Maybe that's part of the reason why I've gotten such good results adding absorption and diffusion in my listening room.

  2. With age comes greater sensitivity to loudness, perfectly happy to listen at reasonable quieter volume now, about 70 db.

I can totally relate to that. My main system has a sweet spot established at 11 feet/equilateral triangle. I never listen loud in that room anymore. Loud volumes at that close of a distance is just annoying to me these days. However I have no problem cranking it in a secondary basement system that is a wide open area.

Yes, I have a certain level of tinnitus/ear ringing. I am a heavy equipment operator and although I wear hearing protection 100% of the time, it's my understanding that vibration is something that can't be avoided and plays a detrimental role in this regard.

Add that on top of years of loud concerts etc. In my own evaluation, I feel like I hear accurately but the mild ear ringing is merely a nuisance and distraction.

Before I continue on and pretend that I'm not a deaf MFer like the rest of you guys......let's forget about hearing loss for a bit and let me crank this next song. Rock on. [emoji106]

  4. Today I added a second THTLP subwoofer:

The box on the front of the subwoofer is a SPA250DSP plate amp.

Here's a photo of it in place:

The La Scalas are fantastic, but the La Scala/THTLP combo is incredible!

Congratulations on your setup. I bet it does sound incredible. I have two THTLP's in my main system as well. Is that the best bass you've ever heard or what?!!!

  5. My hearing as far as music listening goes has changed considerably in the last few years. Most notably the high frequencies. I just turned 50 recently and I would think that as one gets up there in age the treble knob would go up as well. I've known older guys that have gone in that direction and that seems to make sense to me.....but I have been the opposite.

Also, three years ago I put Dave A's MAHL tweeters in my speakers. Like many others have said, they are on the hot side but are very clear and smooth. With a little EQ I liked them very much.....until I couldn't handle it anymore. I put the stock tweeters back in (with titanium diaphragms) and everything seemed right.

I dunno.....for years the only way I listened was balls to the wall. For the last 5-7 years or so I listen normally just below 70db. I regularly let it rip on the weekends though only for a short period of time.

Anyone have similar/opposite/unusual circumstances with their hearing over time?

  6. There's more than one way to get there bud-- I myself refuse to neuter my speakers especially when my typical listening levels are at less than half a watt not a lot of excursion to limit but cutting lower frequencies has a dramatic effect on the sound and impact.
I feel the same about my 30's. It would be a shame to cut the nuts off of the 40hz bass those things can pound out so tight and punchy. My horn loaded subs simply fill in below that to roughly 20hz and it's seamless.

I've had some SVS subs. I liked them mainly for HT. The Ultra subs I had were bad ***. They were ok for two-channel but I could never seem to fully get rid of the rumble. THT's are just flat out superior when it comes to music playback. Smooth and seriously powerful if called upon to do so. Yeah they're big but if stood upright the footprint is only 15x18. I'm talking about the THTLP. Paint the suckers flat black and stick em in a corner and that's all she wrote.

  7. Been saying for YEARS now, that ALL speakers need subs. Unless, of course, they have subs built into the box, like many non Klipsch Designs, except for the new Jubilee, of course.
I agree.....and I've been saying for years now that all speakers benefit from a sub that is properly integrated. Period. If it's not dialed in right, it's a mess and so many people trash the use of subwoofers for this reason.

A decent sub properly integrated can sound good. A very good sub properly integrated can take your system to another level.
