  1. I too have had the best luck with FedEx, both shipping and receiving.
  2. Eminently practical advice! +++ I am not the fanboy for the shipping companies, but I would point out they ship millions of packages a day. We all complain when something goes wrong, but nobody goes on a website and says "UPS brought me a package today in good shape. I love UPS! " -Fair and balanced Dave OK, FedEx delivered a pair of shoes my wife ordered and they arrived in excellent condition. They even delivered them to the correct address!
  3. On vintage and larger gear, I'm at the point if I can't drive a reasonable distance to get it, I won't buy it.
  4. Yes, I called Crutchfield but they have to wait until the UPS inquiry is finished which can be up to eight business days. Once they get the resolution from UPS, then they can send me another amp. I insisted it be sent via FedEx with a signature required for delivery. I received a shipping confirmation from Crutchfield at around 3:00 PM PDT. It said the amp was left on my porch at 1:55 PM? Funny, I was home all day and didn't see or hear UPS pull up? In fact, I was watching ESPN at that time sitting about 15' away from my front door. Another bad thing is now some s**t head has my name and address and may figure out I have other audio gear. I'm probably giving the jackass too much credit. He/she has probably traded it for dope by now. I'm not sure why my response is underlined?
  5. Not only can UPS destroy a Nuclear Containment Vault, they also cannot seem to get the correct address when delivering packages to me! Three times now, they have delivered packages to a house one street over from where I live. The numbers on our houses are the same but the streets have completely different names. The first two times were inexpensive items. This time it was an $800 Yamaha integrated amplifier, gone! The incompetent driver did admit to dropping it off at the wrong house. He said he was going to go to the house and check but I haven't heard back from him, imagine that. I did go over there three times and no amplifier. I got to know the people that live there but, naturally, they are away on vacation. So now I have to wait at least 8 business days to resolve this. The next time I order anything, I will ask which shipping company. If it's UPS, they just lost a sale. I am partially to blame. I ordered the amp from Crutchfield who didn't offer a direct signature for delivery with free shipping. On an item that expensive, I should have insisted on it. Sorry for the rant, I'm just really pissed off!!!
  6. Just bringing these great speakers back to the top. Currently listening to "Rit's House" by Lee Ritenour, awesome!

    GO GIANTS!

My dad always had an AM radio with him, even at the game. He loved listening to Lon SImmons and Russ Hodges. My dad tells me he heard about the moon landing over the radio. He said his words to me were, "The Giants are winning and we landed a man on the moon, it's a great day!" Everything in perspective for my dad. At one point he got up and said it was time to get a hotdog, soda/beer, go to bathroom and stretch. I asked him, why now? He said, Walt Alston is heading toward the mound so we will have plenty time and be done before he even gets there.
  8. Cal Blacksmith, Wayne, hasn't been around for a spell either?

    GO GIANTS!

My dad took me to my first game at Candlestick Park on July, 20th 1969. On the hill for the Giants was Gaylord Perry, for the Dodgers, Claude Osteen. My dad somehow got deluxe box seats near the broadcast booth. I got to meet Lon Simmons, RIP, in the bathroom. I was eight and don't remember too much of the game other than Gaylord Perry hitting a home run. I think it was his first at the big league level? A great memory for sure and I have been a life long fan ever since. Besides Perry's home run, what other historical event happened that day? No fair to Google it.
  10. Wow, it will ten years for me next month. How time flies!
  11. Thanks, I was expecting the worst. I hope he's doing well. I was just reading a message he sent me way back when. I was getting a pair of JBL 4430's and was curious about amplification. I had an Adcom 200 watt amp at the time. His comment, "Oooh, 200 watts is NOT enough!!! He was right as usual.
  12. What happened to Duke? I miss him as well.
  13. A lot of buzz around my neck of the woods. Megan Rapinoe is from here and here folks still live here. Every sports bar was filled to the rafters. Way to go girls!!! Kind of poetic they beat two teams that are from the main country's of The Axis Powers in WWII. Whooped um again!
  14. I have re-evaluated my asking price. It looks to me that the replacement cost of the components is approx. $1K+. I then asked myself if I would pay $1500 for them as is. The answer was no. Seeing as they will be just sitting soon, I am going to lower my asking price to $1200. I will still consider interesting trades, like a restored tube integrated, or ??? I will also assist with pick up and/or delivery for the right deal. Thanks, Mark
  15. I guess I could buy a pair of Pyle Waveguides to fill the holes? That's what was in them when they were three ways. They are only about $30 a pair from Parts Express. It would make them more aesthetically pleasing. If the buyer wanted to turn them back into three ways, you would be 1/3 if the way there, parts wise. All you would need is a compatible compression driver and an additional crossover. I could put you in touch with the builder. I'm sure he would be more than happy to do that.
  16. I forgot to mention, the builder used Speakon connectors for inputs. I currently just run speaker wire directly to the inputs on the crossovers. The input wire to the connectors is still present and can easily be connected to the crossovers. I can provide two long lengths of speaker wire with those connectors. They provide a very solid connection and are used in most PA and Pro speakers. I do have coverings for the rear panel opening though they never been installed and need to be pre-drilled. Here's some additional pictures. The price is negotiable and, again, I always will consider interesting trades. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
  17. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=284353 In the interest of marital harmony, I am reluctantly selling my big DIY two ways. Components are a JBL 2445j compression driver with matching Constant Directivity Horn. Woofer is the Crites cast frame 15" that I believe is built by Eminence. The crossovers were custom made by the builder of the speakers. He based them on the ALK-500 Low Pass design, 12db @ 500hz and a custom design 12db High Pass @ 500hz with CD. It has horn flare compensation to allow them to be used as a two way. The network is unique in the way it varies the balance between the mid and high frequencies using a 16 ohm L-pad as a shunt element. This burns off mid-range energy where the highs are bypassed by the 1uF element. I'm sure that's clear as mud. I can provide a list of components to interested parties. They are built out of 1" MDF with oak finish motor-board. Outer finish is Duratex. I have extra for touch ups. They have massive internal bracing and sound dampening material inside. I linked an AK thread where the builder, "Santa", posted progress on the build. Starting at page 7, posts 105, 109, 111 and 112. They are solid as a proverbial rock and very heavy! Fortunately, there are casters to help move them around. There are no grills, they don't need no stinkin' grills! They started life as a three way with a Selenium compression driver and wave guide as a tweeter crossed at 10Khz. Most of the time I couldn't tell if the tweeter was working or not. They sound much better now as two ways. The JBL compression driver is rated up to 20Khz. Probably a stretch but I'm lucky if I can hear 12K on a good day. The down side, there is a hole where the wave guide was. My thought was to put two small integrated tube amps in the separate tweeter chamber where the controls could be accessed through the front. They are awesome sounding speakers, especially with tubes and it pains me to part with them! I have roughly $1500 into them so I will start there. I will always consider partial trades for interesting audio gear. I could use another quality integrated amp. These are for local pick up in Redding California, about 2.5 hours south of the Oregon border and 2.5 hours north of Sacramento on I-5. Bring a truck or van, I will assist loading them. I can meet or deliver within a reasonable distance for the right deal. I will post more pictures shortly. Here's one next to a Cornwall III. Thanks!
  18. Ever been inside a Sherwood receiver? The picture is of an 8000 which is FM only. The AM/FM 7000 is a real chore!
  19. Very good points Travis. I guess I'm looking at it from a strictly real world management point of view. Subordinates are supposed to be held accountable for their actions by their superiors. There are degrees of discipline from a verbal warning up to termination depending on the violation and prior actions. If a coach, who I would class as a supervisor, does not have the ability to discipline and correct his/her player's action while on the company dime, to me that's an untenable situation. What they do away form work, domestic violence, drugs even homicide, that's a Law Enforcement and, to a certain degree, league issue in my opinion. The only way the coaches should be held accountable for their players actions at work is if they are given the ability to correct those actions and have the backing of ownership to enforce the rules. All too often, I don't think that's the case. I also think pro sports tend to ignore the actions of players prior to being drafted. A lot of thugs get hired because of their talent and abilities. Their bad behavior is often brushed aside due to their athleticism. Insert Aaron Hernandez's name here. By the way, wasn't he a Patriot? This a quote that has stuck with me since I attended his seminar. It was by retired Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, US Army, retired. He said, "Past practice indicates future behavior." If they have done it before, they will most likely do it again.
  20. Pro sports is an interesting phenomena from a business stand point. The workers, or players, tend to make lots more money than their supervisors/managers. I can't think of any other business where that's the case. So, a head coach/manager is supposed to be able to discipline, or at least hold accountable, his/her players for his or her actions. Often times, the player suffers little consequence from "middle management" due to the massive compensation they receive. However, lower paid managers can be gone when one of the stars has an issue because the franchises ability to win more games can be determined by the stars lack of production. Ergo, the lower paid management is held to a much higher standard for lower compensation in most cases. Can you imagine a Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Don Shula etc. taking crap from a player and not putting them in their place for fear of getting fired because the prima donna multi-millionaire athlete might get their feefee's hurt and wine to the owners and the press?

    Sold

    The drivers have been sold.
  22. If we're talking from across the pond, I would put Peter Green near the top of the list.
  23. He does put on a great show! I missed his performance last month at The Cascade, spaced it.
  24. With the very sad passing of BB king, I was thinking who is now the greatest living Bluesman? In my opinion, it's Buddy Guy. I know some who feel he was the greatest before BB King died. I saw Buddy Guy last year at The Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. He was "opening" for Peter Frampton which was a joke. Anyway, I believe he's 78 and can still keep up, play and entertain with the best of them! Even my wife liked his performance better and she's a big Frampton fan. The King is gone, long live the King!
  25. And, look who he gets to come home to every night! All that and she makes a LOT more money than he does. Tom's got it rough.
