  1. I have had both and for full range sound quality, the Cornwall wins that battle IMHO. The model 14's I had, which I got in Lodi, CA several years ago, sounded harsh and was lacking in bass with the gear I had at the time. It was SS gear, big NAD amps if memory serves, but the Cornwalls were better and more musical across the board. They wer actually the later Cornwall II with the drivers screwed to the front of the motor-board. I was single then playing in various bands and almost all of my garage musician buddies preferred the Corns. The tiny speaker connectors at the bottom of the cabinets is a PITA as well. Wasn't Altec owned by Teledyne then??? If you can, I would do an A/B comparison and decide for yourself. I would lean toward more lain back SS gear or good tube amps if it were me. Good luck!
  2. Thanks guys, I will do some more research. I did send Dean an E-mail with some questions. I have to say, I am really liking what I'm hearing. Years ago I had a pair of RF-5's and they were pretty good. They did work much better with a sub-woofer. I had just never had the opportunity to listen to let alone own a pair of RF-7's. I guess I didn't know what I was missing.
  3. Thanks but I didn't think Bob built crossovers for the RF-7? I will check his web page.
  4. A very nice pair of original RF-7's in maple finish followed me home the other day. Being a Heritage/modified Cornscala guy, I had low expectations. My expectations are no longer low. These speakers sound great and have authority. There is some brightness in at various frequencies but not terrible by any stretch. I am using a vintage Sansui AU-717 integrated amp that has been re-capped. I was able to tame them some with the high filter and backing off the treble a bit. I would like to hear from RF-7 owners who have had crossover modifications and your opinions. I am hoping to hear from DeanG as I'm sure he still works some magic on them. Here's a couple pics of one next to the modified Cornscala.

    WTB: DAC

I have a like new Music Hall DAC25.3 with extra tubes if interested.
  6. Oh, I may consider a trade for a bitchin' tube pre-amp.
  7. I am selling my McIntosh C34V pre-amp. It also has a 20 watt SS amp that runs the headphone out and one set of speaker outs. Very unique feature for a pre-amp. It is virtually flawless cosmetically and sonically. All knobs and switches are quiet save for some low noise when changing sources, very minor. I was told it was serviced by an authorized McIntosh center last year in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was not provided paperwork on that but it does work excellently. It comes with the original box w/packing materials, manual, block diagram, and virgin Pan-Locs with template for cabinet mounting. All inputs and outputs work great. If you are a "can" person, the headphone out is one of the best I have heard. The phono section is great as well. Do a Google search and you will find several very positive reviews on this pre-amp. I am only selling it to help finance a tube pre-amp to go with my SE tube amp. I have exactly $1350.00 in to it which is my asking price plus shipping and any Paypal fees if applicable. It is available for audition and pick-up in Redding, CA and I will even buy lunch. I also don't mind traveling within a reasonable distance for the right deal. Thank you!
  8. PM sent with a couple of questions.
  9. I remember the old Turntables Unlimited, Howe Ave. south of Arden if memory serves. Heard my first pair of K-Horns there. They demoed them with Pink Floyd's The Wall. Amazing sound, when the helicopters come in with that big down beat, awesome! Thanks, brought back a great audio memory. Oh, what was the name of the Stereo shop on Arden a ways east of Howe? I think they were the JBL dealer back in the day. Good luck with the sale.
  10. Very nice build! Given the long filament supply string, and its routing, are you hearing any hum when you're near the speakers with no music playing? Also, can you ask your friend why he chose to use what looks like a zener diode in the screen circuit of the output tubes? We designers are always curious about why folks prefer certain implementations! Regards- Maynard Hey Maynard, I will send you a PM this evening.
  11. My apologies if it appears I hijacked the thread, not my intension at all. My friend built a similar amp based on the EL-84 and I have heard both. I preferred the 6L6 amp based on it has tighter and more controlled bass response. The El-84 does sound sweet and is a favorite of some of his audiophile friends. I think that amp has an approx. 3 watt output while the 6L6 has 8 to 10 in class A. For Jazz trios, acoustic music etc., I could be very happy with the EL-84 amp.
  12. I just picked up an amp built by a friend of mine. It's basically an RH single ended design using 6L6 power tubes, 12AT7 driver and 5U4 rectifier. It can use EL-34, 5881 etc. power tubes as well. It's running 300 VDC to the plate. It can also use a GZ34 and similar rectifier tubes. It runs very cool and sounds great. It drives my big Cornscala/JBL/Econowave speakers very well. I'm using a modern Vincent pre-amp that has tube output they claim is class-A. I have only used 6L6 tubes currently. I may try others as they become available.
  13. Doesn't Bob recommend a crossover change when using the CT-125 or is that just for the Khorn, La Scala/Belle?
  14. I guess I should bring a screwdriver? He said they have standard binding posts on the terminal plate. It seems to me some incarnation of the Indy's had 1/4" jack inputs?
  15. I'm going to check out some Industrial La Scala's later today, non-splits. Is the serial number sequence the same as the consumer models as far as year of manufacture? The seller got them off CL and has no clue on the year. Any other tell tail signs of the date? They have metal trim, side handles, casters and painted black finish. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
  16. Thanks guys, I have a potential deal in the works.
  17. Thanks, they do sound great and I will miss them!
  18. I have a beautiful pair of Single Ended Tube, Class A, mono block amplifiers for sale. These were expertly built by a tech. in Northern California. I can provide more information to interested members via PM or e-mail. Quite simply, these are stunning! Best amplifiers I have ever had and I have had a boat load. Unfortunately, in the interest of marital harmony, I am going to sell them. The 813 power tubes were originally designed for AM transmitters and can take up to 3K volts on the plate. These amps are set at 750 VDC so they aren't even breaking a sweat. Here is a summary of the build provided by the tech: "The amps use custom Edcor power transformer feeding a pair of Svetlana 6D22S damper diodes.I have found them to be excellent, especially for higher voltages. This feeds a CLCLC type supply, 3 uF stacked solen film caps to a NOS Stancor 300 mA, 8 Henry choke, 3 stacked Nichicon electrolytics chosen for low ESR. 3X450 for a total of about 125 uF, then to a 3H Hammond choke, then 40 uF Solen film caps. I have a separate power supply for the front end. It is a Glassware PS1 with choke load set to 300 VDC. This feeds the front end section which is a Glassware Aikido featuring the 6SL7 into the 6SN7 driving the 813. The 813 is currently ran in Ultralinear mode to the Hammond 1628 SE transformer. I am using Rod Coleman regulators on the 813 filaments to ensure quiet operation. The 813 uses NOS EF Johnson socket and plate cap. NOS Superior Electric Binding Posts were used. The bias adjustable via a 10 turn pot on top, reading the milliamps of plate current directly on the meter allowing one to vary the operating point and sound quality. The amp is built in a modular fashion making upgrades very easy. I also designed the amp to be scaleable in terms of power output. Currently the plate voltage is set at about 750 VDC but by changing the value of the first cap can be upped to easily over 1 KV which will increase the power output to maybe 60W. Right now I see 40 clean watts which is plenty for me. The base is Honduran Mahogany and the plate is 1/8 inch Brass that I had polished and clear coated at a place in Sacramento to protect the finish. The clear coat is so thin as to be undetectable. Tube compliment is NOS RCA throughout. The amp presents a very easy to drive load (100 K) compatible with most pre-amps. Rich and punchy is the best way to describe the sound of these. They respond well to tube rolling on with the 6SL7 especially. If you like vocals they deliver in spades with headroom to spare do to the 40 watts available." They are mirror imaged save for the driver tubes due to the configuration of the boards. I will include spare driver tubes and damper diodes. I will be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. I can also provide additional pictures to interested members. I prefer local pick-up in Redding, California where they can be demonstrated. I am willing to travel a reasonable distance for the right deal. Shipping is possible but, naturally, will be very expensive. They are about 60lbs each unpacked. I would get the help of a local packing company that I have had great success with in the past. My asking price is $2000.00 US OBO. I do have a Paypal account and would prefer to at least split the fees. Postal Money Order or cash would be preferred. Thanks!
  19. I just received my Carver M500t amp from Hi-Tech Audio in Gresham, OR. They are an authorized Carver Service Center. Rolland and his crew have a reputation for doing great work. The standard chassis refresh was done which replaced 100% of the electrolytic caps. They performed current updates to the power supply, calibrated to factory specs. I also had them install low noise op-amps and Polypropylene bypass caps. The speaker terminals were upgraded to accept banana plugs. He also stripped and re-finished the top cover at no charge, looks like new! The face plate and plexiglass are very nice as well. The total cost with return shipping was $492.00. I have included a photo of the invoice. It comes with a one year parts and labor warranty. Just let me know if there is an issue and we will send it back to them on my dime. It sounds great as you would expect. Warm, punchy with loads of detail and that "tube like" sound. It's rated at 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Here's the story. In between sending the amp to Rolland and now, I made a trade/cash deal for two DIY Single Ended tube mono-blocks. It's a crazy hobby! Consequently and sadly, I will be amp poor and the Carver will have to go. I am asking $550 for it plus shipping via FedEx ground. It will be packed well and double boxed. Thanks!
  20. Thanks Willand, I am very impressed by the sound top to bottom of this amp. I was going to use it to bi-amp my current system but decided to go in a different direction. I'm a bit amp poor currently so it's time to thin the heard a bit.
  21. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/151288-nad-160270-amp-and-preamp-for-sale/#entry1757350 I have a very nice and professionally repaired NAD C-270 amp. I recently purchased this amp and the matching pre-amp. As I only really need the pre-amp, the amp is up for sale. There were some issues when it arrived. There was audible distortion from the right channel. In August of this year, I took it to Luis Galvez of Stereoadvisor in Sacramento, CA. He completely disassembled it and found it needed several resistors, a couple of transistors and a new protection circuit controller. He also adjusted the bias and DC offset. Total repairs cost me $294.06, I have the receipt and some of the replaced parts. The amp now functions flawlessly and sounds great. Cosmetically it is virtually mint save for one small dingus on the front upper left corner, see pic. I know how to pack heavy items well, double box, reinforced corners, large bubble wrap etc. No peanuts allowed! I generally ship via FedEx ground but can do UPS if desired. I am asking $350 which will cover shipping to the lower 48, all fees and, packing materials. If you have any questions or would like additional pictures, please don't hesitate to ask. I have linked the original sale above. Thanks for looking!
