  1. Off topic but... Actually, shotgun slugs are "rifled" to allow them to be fired from choked barrels without the bore pressures rising above allowable limits. The "rifling" on the slug does very little, if anything to impart stability to it. Now a smooth projectle fired from a rifled bore in a common firearm is another matter altogether since the rotational speed is typically hundreds of thousands of RPM... -- Jim
  2. Along with the contruction of them? How are they attached to the speakers, or are they? Anyone happen to have a drawing? I'm considering making a set as part of my old Cornwall refurb project. TIA! -- Jim
  3. And those simple wires will work surprisingly well if they're outside and have a little height, along with being oriented correctly... -- Jim - KE9JR
  4. Cod - From the Crown manual - The IOC (Input/Output Comparator) indicators work like sensitive distortion meters and flash when the amplifier causes any distortion of 0.05% or more. The IOC indicators typically glow for about one minute after the AC power is turned off. You can download a copy of the manual here - http://www.crownaudio.com/pdf/amps/125243.pdf By the time the IOC lamps start to flicker with my Cornwalls and D-75A, stuff is falling off shelves in the kitchen... [] They are really nice amps. When you consider what they cost, they're great amps IMO.
  5. I would guess the SME arm made a huge difference on your TD160. The included arm on my 160C was horrible...
  6. Sadly, they went away, along with Julian Hirsch and Stereo Review. No one it seems, least of all the manufacturers of expensive high end gear, wanted to read that 12ga zip cord works as well as $2500 speaker cables. It destroys too many fantasies and too many profits. I remember reading that Forte review when it came out. I talked to a couple of dealers at the time about trading my decorator Cornwalls in on a new pair of Fortes. But no one was interested. I'm still not sure if I'm sorry about this...
  7. They can stress the wisdom and longevity of buying real quality. My Cornwalls have outlasted two wives and assorted girlfriends... []
  8. Crown is in it for the long haul and treats their customers well. It's always been this way. I just called them for a schematic on a 25 year old long out of production item. The guy in customer service copied the full sized schematics they had for two different revisions of the same model and sent them to me. I had them in two days. On the D45 - D75 subject. I scored a D-75A on eBay a few weeks back for $130. Decent condition, only the noisy input level controls needed a little attention. I just don't see how a person could go wrong with one of these units.
  9. and so are the 150 and 160. Great post, Wolfram. I had a TD-160C back in the 70's. It was to use a common phrase, a total POS. A high mass arm that was finicky about cartridge choice and with headshell contacts that were only good for a few extractions and reinsertions. And the suspension system was totally ineffective. Better look into home with concrete floors if you buy one. I can't imagine one with 30 years of aging and wear being better. My advice on that model. Run far and fast from them...
  10. THIS IS ARGUABLY THE FINEST, MOST ON THE MARK POST EVER PRESENTED TO THE KLIPSCH FORUM. KUDOS TO YOU COLIN... YOU'RE MY HERO! WHAT MORE CAN ONE SAY? Colin got it right. With the Klipsch models all you need to add is a little equalization, either electrical, or acoustical by working a bit on your room. With most other speakers you're fighting any number of other things that you have a difficult to impossible time fixing...
  11. That is physically impossible, IMO. As a test, go to few high end audio stores and audition their best and throw in a few not so best systems. Just for grins, see if the any of the 2 sound the same. Fact is, they won't. It's impossible. Each element (i.e. resistor, cap, tube, inductor, IC, etc. etc.) that the signal goes through in any particular component will be stained or enhanced (however you choose to look at it) to some degree by that element. The wise man also thought me that, actually, I knew it, but just never thought about it that way. It makes sense that's there's a difference. The question is, how much difference, and the bigger question is, can people really tell the difference. Take a common $.75 Panasonic polypropylene film capacitor for example and compare it to some high end $15.00 "audiophile cap". Think anyone could tell the difference in a double blind test? My bet is no way a person could tell the difference but the $5000 cable and interconnect crowd would likely tell me I'm full of it...
  12. Now, now! Be nice![] The next thing you'll be telling me is that my ~2750 S/N constrained vinyl records aren't better then any of the newer formats! LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!!!![] Just an observation. Maybe my ears have gone from old age, but the D-75A Crown I just bought for $130 sounds fine to me. Given that you see them everywhere, and that there's a good chance the monitoring of the original mix was done with one, I guess I'm not alone... <shrug> and I have been saying That here .... for a year ..... maybe it's sinking in ......[:|] Hey, give me a break. I've only been here a month and I bought the Crown 3 weeks ago...[]

  14. A "few years" ago likely translates into "We stopped using it 25+ years ago and just got around to throwing it out a few years back." I'll guess by 1975 it was difficult to find any tube gear in a studio. I'm certain by 1980 it was pretty much all gone. My recent "re-education" in high end audio has been interesting so far. The the standout thing is that people are falling all over themselves to find and use equipment that wasn't considered high-end 30 years ago, and we're now discussing it's alleged superiority...
  15. Yes, having that LSB set will get you every time. [] I'm with filmboydoug. If it doesn't go to 11, I'm not interested...
  16. Being a bachelor you should know that Dawn dishwashing liquid removes most stains from clothing better than about anything you can buy. Work it in with an old toothbrush, let it sit for a few minutes, then wash the clothes as normal. No more stain. Jim's bachelor tip of the day...
  17. I'm not sure of what contaminates there would be in alcohol, but I do wonder about its long term effects on vinyl. A better wetting agent than dishwashing liquid is Kodak Photo-Flo. A $4 bottle of it will make gallons of "wet water" since you mix it at 200-1. But, don't know it's long term effects on vinyl either...
  18. I've found this to be faster than your method, but I've noticed I *really* need to increase the volume after I use it... []
  19. Wow, you guys are a wealth of information but I think most of you are a bit more serious about this than I am. I now have some things to go look at an compare to my budget though. Like scott said, there's always something to spend money on and in my case the list is longer than the money. I'll probably try the Orbitrac unit and see if it's satisfactory before I spend $$ that could be used elsewhere...
  20. Similar to another current thread, I've started recently to listen to a lot of the old vinyl I own. And what I'm noticing is how much these LP's need cleaned and how much surface noise they have. So what's everyone using for cleaning these days?
  21. If you have the space, buy some Cornwalls with that $$. Or with less space you might get some Fortes. I'm surprised nobody noticed these - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5801721837&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
  22. Thanks guys. I have an outside antenna but it's the non-directional amplified variety. I really didn't feel like messing with a rotor for FM. I've listened to a few things on the internet and the quality is probably adequate for my use, but my link is somewhat bandwidth challenged...
  23. Is anyone familiar with the NAD 4225 tuner? I see a lot of them around for little $$. I'm looking for something that's cheap but has decent sensitivity since we don't have many stations to choose from here in flyover country...
  24. You can email yourself. You just can't send yourself any PM's. Now that's a feature! []
  25. That explanation is one of the oldest in the book. It's also known as "It's not a bug, it's a feature"...
