  1. what about some of the units that have a high current outlet for amps? do these squish dynamics also? i thought that was the purpose of the "special" outlet? to prevent hinderence of dynamics.
  2. not sure what ICT copy protection is but HDMI devices have to be capable of comunicating HDCP (ICT may be another name for it)to each other. component cables are not capable of transmitting the code therefor HDCP material can not be played at a high resolution. most devices will play the material through component but at a lower rez. this prevents the disc from being copied at HD resolutions. the description above sound like its saying in order to get 720p or 1080i with component the disc cant be copy protected.
  3. myth #12... you have to have a special HDTV antenna in order to get HD broadcast over the air.
  4. check out monoprice.com for quality hdmi at a reasonable price. dust bunnies don't care if it has monster printed on it or not. i'm not a monster hater they have good products but at that price you can find better. and for lesser money you can find just as good. if you're looking for a UPS make sure it passes power unaltered when not in use and a correct sinewave when operating.
  5. i own the oppo 981 its a fantastic unit for the price. is it worth it?. it depends. if you aren't ready to go BD or HD DVD then yes. if you own a lot of SD DVD's then yes. if you have a large tv that isn't capable of doing a good job with scaling and deinterlacing then yes. if you expect it to do miracles and have an HD like PQ then no. any upscaling player can only do so much with a 480 source. however i found the oppo to suffer from less macroblock enhancement and less jaggies than my old Denon 900. heres a link to oppo for more info http://www.oppodigital.com PS you will find the same price everywhere online and they dont sell in stores.
  6. thank you very much. that is exactly the type of info i was looking for. i had assumed with an input of 7 amps and a total output of 5amps this box wouldn't be very efficient. thanks for the confirmation. i had also read that this capacitor /transformer configuration would cause a speaker hum. i imagine it will probably radiate a lot of heat also. doesn't sound like something i want to use ..but it was free..i'll hold on to it . you never know i may find another use for it.......boat anchor? (¿)
  7. looks like a large capacitor and a large transformer. any other info or sugestions? i'll try and post some pictures.
  8. A friend gave me a Shape Magnetronics Linetamer PCLT 600 Power Conditioner and Line Voltage Regulator. The unit handles up to 600 watts of power. it was used on a small server at his previous place of employment. i found one like it on ebay and that seller says it's great for computers and stereo systems. That's all I know about it. I can't find any info on the web about it. Does anyone know anything about it? i'd like to incorperate it into my system but would really like to have some information about it first. __________________
  9. personally i dont like in ceiling/wall speakers, there ok for ambiance and i like the way they can disapear under a coat of paint . i just prefer floorstanders. however, im not familiar with the models you are speaking of. for around $2000 i believe you could get 2 synergy F3, a synergy C3 and a sub 12. you may have to shell out a few hundered more for S3 surrounds.
  10. personally i like the synergy line. probably because i havent had the oportunity to audition a reference system. the sub-12 is a good sub. i dont think you would be disapointed in the synergy line. however, it seems like overkill for a dorm room especially with 2 subs. i have 2 F-3, 2 S-3, a C-3 and a sub-12 in my livingroom (about 20x30 with 20' ceiling at the peak) open to a kitchen and hallway which really should also be included in that measurement. the F-3's and sub completely rock my house.
  11. i used a router with a roundover bit. (borrowed from the father in law) i wanted to do the same on the tv stand however i was having a terrible time finding solid oak in the lengths i needed that were straight. so i had to use oak plywood and use oak edge banding.
  12. forgot i already posted that. here's a pic before i moved it into the house
  13. actually i mostly used a circular saw and a drill. i do have a table saw but only used it once for the doors. i did have to purchase a biscuit joiner for the doors. if i didn't want doors i wouldn't have needed the joiner or the table saw. the real reason for making my own was less of a cost issue. the issues i had with salamagers products was 1. oak is not an option 2. the center bay is not wide enough for my center channel and 2. there is no option to have a black stand with a natural top. all the wood is oak. the sides, back and shelves are stained black to match the black oak grain on the F-3's. the top is natural oak to match the rear surround shelves i made last year. the punched aluminum inset for the doors came from Lowe's. the extruded aluminum posts are from tslots and believe it or not all the hardware was ordered from salamander. here's a pic of the surround shelves
  14. thanks. the stand took about 3 weeks to build but i've only got about $300 in it compaired to a genuine salamander synergy tripple 20 which would have ran a heafty $2,000. (got more time than money, plus i really enjoy making my own stuff). heres the shelves i built for the rear surrounds.
  15. i finally finished building my salamander clone stand. heres the setup
  16. it was a huge upgrade for us. our old set , a 27" magnavox, was 10 years old. still a great set. just hard to see a 27" from 11ft away. this is also our first HDTV. i researched for about 2 years before i decided on this one. i sure hope it lasts 10 years. i tried to future proof myself as much as possible with this purchase by getting 1080p and 3 HDMI ports. but thats nearly impossible the way the technology is changing so quickly. i am glad i didnt buy the one i was looking at 2 years ago as well as the one i wanted last year. however i keep thinking i'll want the next model. when they incorporate HDMI v1.3. maybe if i just dont look at them i wont know what i'm missing. but i love what i've got at this moment.
  17. thanks i figured it out. my photo was too large.
  18. how do i post picture? my new sony 60" XBR2. bought just after thanksgiving. a present from the wife and me to ourselves.
  19. one bottle says isopropyl alchohol (70%) i have another bottle that is 50% i also have a bottle that says isopropyl alcohol (80%) RUBBING COMPOUND with wintergreen oil and lanolin. the uses include "helps relieve minor muscular aches due to over-exertion" on all 3 bottles so i'd say YES , isopropyl alchohol is rubbing alchohol just make sure it doesnt have anything else added to it. and i would suppose the more % alchohol = less water, which should evaporate quicker.
  20. just in case you dont see the original post i'll copy it here. just picked up my sub today. still not sure exactly what was wrong with it. the guy at BB said "it had a bad wire" i said "a bad wire, was it loose?" he said "yep they had to replace one of the amps" i said "they replaced the amp for a bad wire" he said "yep, bad wire at the fuse" i just checked it for any damage and left.

  22. i feel for you both. my sub-12 is away being repaired right now. kept poping the fuse. music and movies are so dull without it.
  23. i agree if you really want TV info check out avsforum. since you are partial to Sony i would look at KDS-R60XBR2. its their newest SXRD rear projection LCOS. 1080p, 3 hdmi ports, a brighter bulb, new light engine and DRC version. supposedly solved the green blob issue that has plagued previous SXRD's. i hear it does an excellent job of up converting standard def. signal. and from what I've read is an excellent set. it is so new though good luck actually finding one at a store. most of the people that have them preordered sight unseen. lots of web sights have them sears, tweeter, circuit city and the like , but I have yet to see one on display. it is probably what I'll be getting after i see one.
