  1. Founders Rd. Residence Inn web site shows no rooms available for June 22-23.
  2. Hi Bill,Is that your call sign? WB8LBY here. The K'horns and one of the Heresys are set up in the living room as part of my 5.1 (actually 6.1) system. Haven't decided what I'm going to do with the second Heresy yet, but it's always good to have a "spare". [] The new La Scalas are now residing in my son's bedroom in the basement. The room is only about 12x15. Just a couch, a bed, a strereo rack and two La Scalas. Oh yea, did I mention it's LOUD? [] They "cleaned up" very nicely with just with just some Pledge Orange Glow and a little Old English Scratch Cover. The Belles are at my other son's house. The cabinets were in pretty rough shape when he got them, and he's still in the process of refinishing them. It's been five months since he got them, and he's just fininshing up the first one. Apparently his busy social schedule is keeping him from getting the job done in a timely manner. Ahh, to be young and single again! [] He's competely disassembling the cabinets and he's doing a very thorough job. They'll look great when he finally gets them done. He also replaced the tweeters, which were blown when he got them, and the crossovers with Bob Crites'. Will post a couple of pictures later. Bob
  3. I"m so proud![] First, my oldest son scores a pair of Belle's in March, now my youngest one comes up with these Lascalas. Just need to get him set up with his own user name. Add in my K'horns and Heresys and we're turning into a total Klipsch household. [] Bob
  4. I got the Lascala's home and they are in fairly good shape. Apart from some minor scratches and a bit of dust they work fine. The crossover is Type AA, the tweeters and mids are in excellent condition, and as far as the woofer goes it sounds fine. All in all I believe that I got a pretty good deal on them. I will get some pictures on when I get a chance. By the way this is Bob's son John, not Bob he was too busy swearing at the Lions to deal with this.
  5. I am buying 2 mid 1980's Lascallas for $700 total, and I wanted to know exactly what to look for, and what should I listen for also. The finish is in great condition, with little or no damage. However I would like to know what else to check for in order to make sure i am not getting taken for a ride. Also is there any type of music or certain song I should play through them in order to properly check the tweeter subwoofer and anything else that may have been ruined.
  6. Paul, I recently replaced the KV-1 I had been using as a center channel with a Heresy. I initially had the Heresy sitting directly on top of the TV using an Omnimount stand from Circuit City. However, it didn't really look too good, and having a 40 pound speaker setting directly on the plastic frame of the set didn't seem like a good idea. I built an 18"x24" wall shelf out of a piece of birch, and mounted it on the wall (using two wooden brackets). I'm very happy with the improvement in the sound, and my wife is reasonably happy with the way it looks. Since my TV is an LCD rear projector, magnetic fields are not an issue. Bob
  7. Well, I gave the Dupli-Color a shot. Three light coats and it came out great. The weave isn't blocked, nor is the fabric stiff. It matches my K'horn grilles quite nicely. I'm happy with the results. [] Bob
  8. OK, I stripped, sanded, prepped, and have applied two coats of Watco (Dark Walnut). They came out pretty good, and the color is about where I want it. Will applying a couple additional coats of Natural (clear) Watco at this point be of any benefit? I would like them to have just a bit of sheen when I'm done. Will additional coats help acheive that? Also, do I need to finish up with an application of BLO, or can I just use the Watco and call it good? If so, what does the BLO do that the Watco doesn't? Thanks again for your help. Bob
  9. I want to change the color of my Heresy grilles from brown to black. Is there a way to dye the original fabric? The grilles are in good condition, I just want to change the color. A guy over on AVSForum recommended using a product called Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric Coating. It is apparently used to re-color fabrics in cars, but he said he used it on his grille cloths and it worked fine. He said it imparted a "starchy" feeling to the grille cloth, but won't flake off and doesn't block the weave of the fabric. Has anyone tried anything like this? I don't want to end up wrecking the grilles, and this sure would be a lot easier than trying to sell them on Ebay and buy black ones. Thanks, Bob
  10. Finally got my Heresys! They are Birch Raw. The picture on Ebay made them look a lot darker than they actually are. They also have brown grilles (looked black in the pictures, which was what I really wanted to match my Khorns). I took a chance and gingerly set one up on the Omnimount shelf (rated for 35 lbs.) on top of my 50" Sony RPLCD. Low and behold, the shelf and the TV seem to hold it OK. Put on PinkFloyd "Pulse" DVD...OMG, MAJOR improvement over the KV-1 I'm replacing with the Heresy. Nothing matches visually, but it sure sounds good! [] Now it's time to strip 'em and slap on the Watco, then back to Ebay to wait for some black grilles to show up. One of the best purchases I ever made!
  11. I think it's going to take some sanding to get the cigarette burn out. Hope it's not all the way through the veneer... What kind of A-hole puts a lit cigarette on a Klipsch speaker? Bose, maybe, but not Klipsch. [] Must have been one hell of a party! Seller says they shipped yesterday, so I should have them by week's end. It'll be interesting to see what I've got. Worst case, I may have to re-veneer them, but that's definitely the last resort. Bob
  12. Thanks Tom, If the seller ever ships them (eight days and counting), I'll be able to see what kind of veneer they actually have. When you say "walnut stain", does Watco Danish Oil fit the bill, or do you consider it to be a "BLO product with colorant added"? If Watco will work, it sound like the "Light Walnut" would be the way to go since application of consecutive coats will make it darker (if needed). Bob
  13. Thanks guys. I'll go the Watco route first. I think I'll be happy with the results. Re-veneering would really be nice, but it sounds like more of a challenge than I want to bite off at this time. My woodworking skills are limited to sawing off a 2x4 with a circular saw and not cutting off any body parts in the process. [] Bob
  14. I won an Ebay auction for a pair of Heresy !!'s. As you can see in the attached photo, the cabinets will need to be refinished. I haven't received the speakers yet, so I don't know exactly how bad they are. The attached photo shows the worst one of the two (I hope). My goal is to make the Heresys match the finish on my walnut oiled Khorns as closely as possible. I've read several posts on what to use (BLO vs. Watco vs. others) and I'm not sure what the best choice would be in this case. Do I need to use chemicals to strip the old finish off before applying the new finish, or will sandpaper and a sanding block suffice? What grade(s) of sandpaper would you suggest. Lastly, can you think of a way to at least partially hide the cigarette burn if the sandpaper doesn't take it out? Thanks, Bob
  15. Greetings, I'm Joe's dad. I listened to the speakers yesterday, and the vocals actually sound somewhat "raspy". I'd describe the distortion as sounding similar to an amplifier in clipping or a rubbing voice coil. The distortion is present at both low and high volume levels. I've always thought a good motto for Klipsch speakers would be "Loud and Clear". These Belles have the "loud" part down, but definitely not the "clear". I know that the crossovers could be responsible for frequency response problems, but can they actually cause distortion? We'll be trying a different pre-amp / amp today, and will post the results. Thanks.
  16. To better match my Khorns, I'm thinking about upgrading my center channel speaker from a KV-1 to a Heresy. While I'd prefer a smaller center channel speaker (KLF C-7?), I understand the Heresy will be a much better match. The speaker will need to mount above my 50" Sony RP LCD. I'm currently using an OmniMount stand affixed to the cabinet of the TV to hold the KV-1, and I'd prefer to use the same stand for the Heresy. However, the Omnimount has a maximum weight capacity of 35 lbs., so the Heresy would probably be a little too much for it. Also, I'm not sure that having the TV cabinet support a 40 lb. speaker is a good idea. My two options are a wall mounted shelf or a wall mount of some kind. I've heard of one person using a wall mount for a 13" TV with success. How are those of you with Heresy centers mounting them? I think having the speaker mounted horizontally would be more asthetically pleasing, but I haven't really decided yet. Also, is a KLF C-7 or an Academy really that bad of a match to the Khorns? I'm would think that either of them would be a significant improvement over the KV-1.
  17. I have 18 year old Klipschorns for the fronts and a Klipsch KV-1 center that I bought off ebay a couple weeks ago. My receiver is a Denon AVR635. The speakers are used strictly for home theater, no music. I've only had a surround receiver for about a month. I've temporarily hooked up a pair of detachable speakers from a "boom box" for the side speakers. Just wanted to get an idea how much program material actually comes out of them. It appears that there typically isn't much, so I don't see any reason to spend a lot on them. I was planning on spending about $250, but I might go a little higher if it made a big difference in sound quality. I'm not sure how important it is for the side speakers to sonically match the fronts, but I'm hoping the SS series would be a decent match to what I have. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
  18. I'm looking at purchasing either of these to use as my side surround speakers. Apparently the SS-1 was discontinued in 2004, but OneCall.com still has them in stock. The S-1, which I assume is the replacement for the SS-1, is available at Best Buy for about $50 more. Is the S-1 improved in any way, or did they just change the model number? Also, does anyone know if OneCall is an authorized Klipsch dealer? Thanks, Bob
