  1. Set them to max. Max is the only setting that does not have any compression. That is of course, unless you want it compressed to avoid huge changes in volume. I have RX-V1500 and setting to max I can hear whispers then explosions will rattle the walls, all still clean sound. If you want to avoid big volume differences use night cinema. If you set up your speakers by ear then you're just setting them until they sound good to you. Nothing wrong with that.
  2. You guys rock! I wouldn't have believed it until I heard it. I was watching an Eric Clapton dvd recently at a soundshop on all Klipsch reference, and now I want to to hear it at home. I think I've easily got that much sound in my little living room. It turns out recently I was talking to a friend of mine who had been on a job putting fire sprinklers into the Klipsch factory. He told me about the listening rooms they had. He said that they had these rooms, with no doors, that when you walked into them it was dead silent. In the middle of the factory. Cool. Thanks wstrickland, and I like the pic colter. Too bad we live too far apart to get together over a pint and talk sound. I'm going to timbre match all the way as the funds become available. Bose..... "Better sound through research" Should be "Better sound through marketing" lol Ian
  3. Yes, yes and yes. I posted my question a few weeks back which led to me buying a KV-4 to match my CF-3's from wstrickland. It was a signifigant upgrade from the little Sony I had which accounts for some of my amazement. However, it goes beyond that. When sounds pan from L to R it used to be clear that the center was different. Now it's very seemless. I've even begun to like music in the DTS Music setting on my Yamaha. Before I only liked to listen to music in 2 channel. (it is still my favorite) Now I want matching Klipsh all the way around. []
  4. I want it, just don't have them money. Maybe next month if you haven't gotten rid of it yet.
  5. Subwoofer phase matters as well. I put my sub 180d out of phase and it made a huge difference. When it was in phase it was obvious that the mains and the sub were cancelling one another. Depends on your distance from the sub if the low frequencies from the mains reach you at the same time.
  6. I like the YPAO mic. I think when it gets done the sound is warmer and it compensates for room acoustics. My right main is next to a wall. Without YPAO it sounds louder, afterward the sound moves back the the center. Mcgoo, You went way over my head with doppler distortion. I'm curious if you feel like sharing. I have heard when dis-similar drivers produce the same frequencies the result can be less bass. I knew a smart guy a long time ago when I was into car stuff who talked me out of using 10" woofers in conjunction with 12". Since the 5.1 soundtracks are divided up then wouldn't you think that most of the low rumbling comes from the .1 and is not sent to the mains? That is, as long as you don't set LFE OUT to BOTH. When the speakers are set to large then there's no high pass at all, right? When you talk about setting the mains as low as 50hz then I'm assuming you're talking about a subsonic filter, which as far as I know isn't included with my receiver.
  7. I wish I had the money to buy those cf-1's right now. Temptation is a mother......
  8. I have an RX-V1500. Setting speakers to small is just a high pass at 100hz. I use it on my center and rears since they are only 5.25's. My center is getting ready to be a KV-4 though (yay!!) an then it's going to be set to large. I like the sub set to 80 for movies and 120 for music. Somebody's going to blast me for that on here but that's how I like it. With a sealed box it doesn't get out of control.
  9. Good to hear that. I haven't been into country forever, so I'm sure there's alot out there I haven't sampled yet. I heard some Merle recently though, and I'm considering gettin an album of his. I was reading that alot of folks are finding that their RF-7's sound much better with 200+ watts. They're rated the same as my CF-3's @ 250w and 1000w peak. Maybe I need 200 watts. I'd really like to read up on the epic series if anybody knows where I can get some reliable info on them.
  10. I have epic cf-3's and running them with a Yamaha 120wpc receiver.
  11. Since I've had my first pair of Klipsch, I've noticed some things. They don't really do that much for country or heavy metal. Go ahead and laugh now, yes I like those kinds of music. Country seems optimized for voice. Maybe so it'll sound good on crappy pickup truck speakers... (yes I have a pickup) LOL Metal seems optimized for tons of mid-bass, maybe best for concert speakers. One of my favorite bands is Dave Matthews. These speakers seem to reveal alot and sound incredible with that kind of music. Not to say that they can't blast metal, but it seems like they would sound better with metal if the woofers were a bit more active. Probably wouldn't hurt country either.
  12. Thanks Michael, I read alot about the amps. I saw the pictures. It seems to me like the difference may be between which amp can produce the longest continual output due to the size of the power supply. The QSC supply is twice as big, just guess-timating from the pics. They're both rated 20 to 20 so either somebody's exaggerating or not telling all the details. However, I also read that both amps are built in China. Any thoughts? Do you think reliablility is really that much of an issue for home use? I'm not powering lots of huge subs at once from them, just two towers and not for hours and hours at a time. Most of the reviews dealt with running them for live audio shows which obviously requires very high power for extended lengths of time which is outside of my movie watching and music listening habits. I am looking for good hedroom for 250w speakers and it seems that a 450w rating should be plenty. My point here is not to argue. I'm a novice in this arena, I freely admit. I am simply trying to weigh the cost per watt and actual reliability of these units for my particular application. I would want two maybe run two EP2500's for a dual voice coil sub and two Epic CF-3's. I, like any lover of sound, would like the absolute best quality product but like most of us I cannot justify added expense just for the sake of it.
  13. Has anybody listened to Behringer amps before? They're damn cheap, but wonder if the sound quality is there. Half the price of QSC at nearly the same output. $600 QSC 500w vs. $300 Behringer 450w. Most of the reviews were good.
  14. Thanks, excited to get it and blast some movies!!
  15. ka7niq, I would love if you could point me in the direction of any reliable info on the epic series. I recently bought some cf-3's and I haven't been able to find much ino on them. Is there a way to tell what year of production mine are? Thanks!!
  16. Okay, I looked at the Crown K2 and answered my own question. You mean pro rack mount stuff. My dad's a musician so I've seen that musician's friend catalog many times. That amp is absolutely out of hand. I like it.
  17. I'm sorry, are you guys talking about "pro" as in professional, or "pro" as a brand name of amplifiers? I'm gonna take at a look at that Crown K2. My Yamaha actually has a cooling fan in it which I never heard except once. I was cranking it for a good bit and for some reason I abruptly turned it down and walked near it. That was the only time I ever heard the fan. I would hope that any quality home amp would be as quiet. If the fan causes noisethrough the speakers it sounds either poorly constructed or malfuctioning.
  18. I bi-wired my speakers and can't really tell the difference. I have no idea if there's any real benefit or not. Try it and see if you like it. Good luck.
  19. I have Epic CF-3's and according to the website they are 250 continious and 1000 peak. I have Yamaha RX-V1500 and it has pre-outs for all channels. I'm kinda new to home audio so I'm sure there are many fine brands of amplifiers I'm sure I have never heard of. I did alot of car audio in the past (younger days) and for car amps to approach the watts per dollar level that home equipment commands you'd have to be purchasing the really high end stuff. I had a Precision Power car amp that was a grand for 800w mono @ 2ohms but this home stuff is really up there in price. What I'm getting at is I'm not sure what's the best quality per buck in home audio. I'm glad to hear that my idea is not new! If I was blazing a trail I'd be worried.... How do you re-calibrate the volumes? Wouldn't I just set the gain on the outboard amp to match the receiver? I know you have to double amp power to get 3db, but I've definitely noticed clarity improvements with less than doubling the power. I went from my old Yamaha @ 80w to my new one with 120w and it was distinctly cleaner and a bit louder. In my car days I upgraded from 50wpc in my front speakers to 100w and I was less impressed by the volume than by the clarity so I pretty much expect the same at home.
  20. Wanted some input on an idea I had. I have a 7.1 Yamaha with 120wpc. Everything is fine with me for movies. However, I have an insatiable desire for loud clean music. My speakers are rated 250 and 1000 peak. I was thinking about getting a seperate 2 channel amp with 200-300 watts for stereo listening. With an outboard 2 channel amp wouldn't I need to disable it for movies? Seems like the mains with all that extra power would somehow be unbalanced. Then again I suppose I could just turn down the volume. LOL The idea is that I don't want to buy a friggin' seven channel amp so I can really blast the music. I never listen to music in anything but 2 channel unless I'm just using it for background noise. (parties..) Anybody ever do something like that before?
  21. Done. Just need to work out the details. Do you still have my email address? Sorry if I seemed pushy, you know how it is when you get bitten by the Klipsch bug. I've been staring at ebay alot lately looking for some bookshelf units for surrounds....... [8-|] My Epics can't wait to meet their new friend!!
  22. I've been noticing that. Figured this would probably be my best bet. Been watching ebay for a few weeks.
  23. I am looking for a kv-4 to match my cf-3's. Anybody have one for sale? Thanks!!
  24. I would like to buy a KV-4 if anyone has one for sale. Thanks!!
  25. I have Epic CF-3's and the crossover networks are seperate. The difference is minimal if at all. I think maybe I was just having wishful thinking that such a simple mod. could effect sound quality in a major way. If it sounds too good to be true....... Thanks everyone.
