  1. thanks for the replies guys. artto, i was waiting for that to be said. i think ive finally convinced myself mp3 isn't as great as it cracked up to be. I can justify a cd player, but not the copious amounts of cd's to go in it. just yet. Has anyone tried any lossless formats like flac? Canadian_Dude. currently the amp is connected via a 3.5mm heaphone jack, i dont have a 3.5mm digital line out, I didn't think that would make much of a difference as the amp in all its glory is analogue.
  2. well i don't post here often but try to have a read about once a week. i finally got off my backside and got myself a component system and did away with store bought systems. its not much but its a start (hey im at college! ) currently ive got an older yamaha natural amp (circa about 1982) was gonna upgrade to an older luxman but just don't quite have the cash atm. i have some new speakers coming in the post, some diy bookshelf speakers (my first attempt at a kit speaker). now my question is this. currently my main input is a pc playing mp3's into the aux on the amp. It sounds quite harsh, so i upgraded to an older soundblaster audigy platinum sound card. it sounded better. i was wondering would upgrading to an m-audio usb dac sound even better? or would that be total overkill for my basic setup? could i benefit from using a hardware equaliser (the software eq's all seem a bit crap) ? also the m-audio's from what ive read have multiple in's and outs. does that in fact mean i could have use more than 1 line out at once? and say run a 2nd amp and set of speakers in another room? thanks in advance
  3. hi, recently a mate of mine came to me with 2 sets of dead promedia 4.1's. Now both sets of speakers work, accept the amps are blown in BOTH of them. after reading up a bit I realised this seemed to be a common occurance. what would be the best way to power these babies? i was thinking of running them all off a 5.1 amp (only front and rear channels and sub) can anyone suggest an amp to power them? or, can someone suggest a place where I could buy 2 replacement amps at a reasonable price. Im from australia so shipping could be a killer. any advice welcome
  4. o.k sounds interesting colin, but wouldn't I have to match the size of the bin with the speaker's recommended air volume? the same with car subwoofers?
  5. o.k then, well my next question would be, how would I go about matching an AMP to those puppies, is there any brands I should look out for? or stay well clear of.
  6. hey, i may be a newbie in the audio world but I know a bit about computers. my music server is as follows: amd 2800+ abit standard motherboard. running standard vga graphics. soundblaster audigy, was gonna buy an audigy 2, but this has optical out so i thought.. why bother? lg dvd burner. 20gig boot drive 2 x 200gig seagate sata drives for music. i just have a basic version of win xp installed on the 20gig, and have winamp in the startup, so when you boot it loads winamp automatically. Im also using winamp 'albumlist' which lets you select entire albums to play instead of choosing tracks at random. i think all up i might have spent $500 australia on it.
  7. ahh o.k. they also claim their new speaker line 875's, 'highs reproduced actually exceed the ears upper frequency limit by a full octave' which made me wonder a bit..also. what about these. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Speakers-Klipsch-15-500watt-highest-quality-USA_W0QQitemZ7383178727QQcategoryZ23794QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  8. hey thanx for the replies. im from australia, so there isn't much gear on ebay.com.au accept for stuff like this. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-PAIR-BEHRINGER-TRUTH-B2031A-MONITORS_W0QQitemZ7378289985QQcategoryZ23794QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and other gear from this store. also. my mate is a rep for this company, can do me a decent deal on this gear, but im really unsure about spending up big without hearing it first. http://www.zensonic.com.au/ and i live in a south island of australia where that brand isn't known at all.
  9. if you have an old comp laying around, turn that into a firewall, just download smoothwall and follow the prompts. damn simple
  10. wow, sounds impressive, the price tag you spoke of is around what I was looking to spend. $600 and find a decent amp to power them.
  11. hey man, thanx for the advice. Ill have a read of those forums, would it be better for me to just ditch the 'building' idea and spend up big on a ht system?
  12. hi, Im looking at building some speakers to accompany my mp3 jukebox. Im fairly good with electronics but have never bothered to build speaker cabinets before. They will be in a fairly large room (my lounge room) Ill be mostly using them for playing my mp3 collection, and watching the occasional movie (maybe once a week) Id just like some guidance as to what I should be looking for when buying components, what sort of speakers would best suit my needs etc. any help would be much appreciated.. oh PS. im in australia if anyone knows of any good online stores down under that would also help. thanks
