Took a look. at some of the Will Vincent Dynaco ST 70 restorations. Out of my price range, but it seems there is no direct contact or website. Only connection is with people who resell the equipment for Will.

I have in the past owned one of his creations really nice sounding.. I think you can find him on the Audiogon forum under the name of autospec or something like that...

jcmusic, you have some SERIOUS analog gear!  Consider me envious.

I have gotten much closer to audio nirvana over the last couple of years.  Going to a digital active crossover (with much help from Chris A) and a dedicated and well-treated room has moved mountains for me.   These two changes elevated my system from "above average" to amongst the very best I have ever heard at any price point.   At this stage, my analog sources are definitely my weak link.  I wish I had some of your pieces in my system.  Maybe someday!

    Thanks Tarheel TJ,

Yes treating your room and using a DSP will bring your system to a whole different level.. There is no going back, as for the analog sources all you need is one good tape deck. Then I can help you with getting copies of Master tapes like the ones I have. You have never heard anything like a master tape until you hear one, soo much more info in the music it's insane!!!

Nice find.  I've considered one of those, but then I find myself considering many different cars and realize I don't know what I want. :)

I am very much like you in that aspect, I like a lot of different cars but; I had German made cars in the past and knowing how smart the German's are it was an easy choice.

looks like a 911 from the front ----------is the car manual

Yes it's a MT6 speed, I wouldn't own an automatic.... They do look like a 911 from certain angles, I thought about getting a 911 but, after driving the Cayman there was no going back.

The balance the Cayman has is superior to the 911 because it's a mid engine chassis, the 911 has a rear motor quite a bit of difference....

  5. This arrived yesterday finally the hunt is over, this is my new to me 2014 Porsche Cayman S model. I have wanted a Porsche since I was a kid, I had talked myself into buying the new 2020 Corvette but, due to the demand and lack of building per the Corona Virus Chevy stopped production and stopped taking orders. I learned that they will only take orders now for the 2021 models, well I didn't want to wait until this time next year. So I started looking at Porsche's and with all this time on my hands because of the quarantine I found what I wanted, made a deal and had it shipped to my door!!!

    Hey there Jay!

All is well here.  Just hanging around getting older and wiser....older at least (turned 60 last week).  I was working from home 4 days a week before all this began so that part is easy.  Not hanging out with the grand kids has been the toughest adjustment for me.

    Stay safe my friend.

    Hey Gary,

Glad to know all is well, yea that getting old thing I know I turned 62 in January...

What's up everyone?  Nice to see my old pals posting!

Back to the subject at hand...  I haven't made any major changes to my main system in probably a decade or longer.  I honestly can't remember when I bought any of my gear but it has to be at least 10 years since Craig sold me NBS prototype #2.  My room has changed a few times and my Khorns now sit more than 20 ft apart which was a massive improvement.

    Hey Gary,

Good to see you here again too! How are things?

You've probably got more $$ tied up in one of those tape decks that I do my whole system.  Yowza!

One thing this "shelter at home" thing does is get me back in touch, not with my gear, but with my music.  I've been pulling out stuff that I've not listened to in years.  Very enjoyable...even through my mighty 4 watt homebrew (OK, somebody else brewed it, but it's still homebrew) amp.

    Amp_EL842.jpg

Believe it or not you would be surprised at how much money I have in the decks! Only one of them was real expensive the others were just great deals after a lot of looking!!!

Now the tapes that I have are another thing all together!!! They are very pricey!!!

I haven’t changed my main system in 13 years. Nearly 30 if you don’t count the CD player or the addition of a second tonearm to my table.

Wow!!! Allan I haven't seen you on here in a very long time! How are you brother?

I think you could probably upgrade those old lamp cord cables.  🤣

C'mon man, you've got tape decks, a record player and a tube amp which looks like it could set those curtains on fire.  Do you have any source gear from this century?

I think you should feel good that there's still a few things you might consider to add to your system.  You don't want to get bored.   😷

Slight correction, the only thing that I might change would be some of the settings on the Xilica just cause I can!!!

Fortunately, the rest of the world will continue to turn.

There are always things that can be done, both small and large.  I have no personal desire to stop learning via any self imposed stop-work orders.

Interestingly, I'm not really a "driller" by nature (as the truly obsessive-compulsive fanatics used to be called during my sailboat racing days), but I always seem to find new things to do to improve the results...like anything else. I've found that when I learn about how to deal with little nagging issues that I hear, those little things often turn out to be big things, e.g.,

    • K-402-MEH,
    • demastering music,
    • phase-flattening crossovers and Jub configuration to achieve lower phase growth,
    • controlling early reflections...

...and a myriad of other things not yet discussed.  These make a big difference in sound when summed together in my experience.  And that's just over the past 5 years or so.  What I listen to now has little resemblance (in terms of sound quality) to what I started with ~12 years ago with the arrival of the Jubs. Each time my wife mentions that she didn't think that the sound could get better, it gets better.  There's no reason to believe this is going to stop in the near future.  Perhaps the focus will shift to other subjects than just loudspeakers, room acoustics, and enjoying listening to music, etc.

My own journey has been continuously disrupted by learning new things (whatever the subject).  I hope to continue as long as possible.

    Chris

    Chris,

I agree with you on the learning it will never stop especially if you chase it. My learning now is about the tape machines, since they are big and hard to move I needed to learn to do as much as I can for them to avoid having to send them out. This is where my focus is currently and I am good with that.

I am in the same boat... So much so I have turned down moving on to Jubilees.

My system is so balanced and dimensional in my listening space I have NO DESIRE to change anything to try and gain another <5% in performance.

I am so happy and so blissful I've sold off all my unnecessary audio gear... though I would love to get a 'separates' 5-7 channel class D for home theater duty sometime in the future,

Agreed, I thought about Jub's as being the next thing but, my room isn't big enough! Hell the Khorns are really to big but I have had them forever and gotten use to the sound quality. I can't go backwards!!!

Hmmm, I would be done, too, I think. Are those Otari deck on the right?

Yes all three decks are Otari's, I need to change my signature. I sold off the Studer's because the Otari's sound better by a good margin...

  14. Well my journey is finally over I have been on this ride starting with this system in 2005, I love the way it sounds as is and will not be changing anything else ever again. My collection of tape decks is complete my TT will never be changed so I am good to go until I can't hear anymore. Does anyone else feel the same???

Well we final drug out some gear and decided to give bi-amping a go on the KLF-30's. So with our regular setup of all silver trim version  Emotiva - xsp-1, xda-2, erc-2 & xpa-1 mono blocks we added a pair of Denon poa-4400 mono blocks. The xpa-1's are working on the LF side while the poa-4400's get the HF duties. We have a set of xlr splinters so we took the signal out of the xda-2 and ran separate xlr's to each amp.

So after listening to some Adam Hurst, London Grammar and Aquilo there is a stark difference. The bottom is is much stronger and tighter and the highs are defined and airy, more subtle details.  Wonder if it would be worth the work to hook up our second pair of poa-4400's and go tri-amping.

This is what happened to me with my khorns, the difference was staggering to the point I went ahead and tri amped. i am never going back!!!

Wow, don’t let your non-audio friends or family know how obsessed you are, they’ll call for the white coats.  As someone who used to listen to WJZZ in Dolby FM, I admire your obsession but can’t begin to follow it regarding FM.

When it comes to all things compression I defer to @Chris A.  Perhaps he has suggestions.

I do have a question.  Is quality FM the only source to be played on the subject setup?  If not, how will you easily switch to other sources?

    Neil,

We have a couple great FM stations here in New Orleans and I do like to listen on certain day/nights but, the compression just ruins the sound and makes it hard to enjoy...

    Jeff,

Compression of FM broadcast signals could be offset partially if you have a multiband expander/compressor running on a computer in real time to feed the FM signal into.   I would try upward expansion of the treble (1-6 kHz) separately from the midrange (250-1000 Hz).  I would not expand the extreme highs above 10 kHz--just leave those alone for the moment.  My best guess is that you're listening to a lot of bass compression (below 100 Hz) and midrange compression (250-1000 Hz). Midbass boost (100-250 Hz) will muddy the sound so I'd avoid this area initially, at least until you can successfully expand the midrange and perhaps bass regions.

Is this what you were intending to see?

    Chris

    Chris,

Ok firstly my name is Jay, LOL!!!

Now while I agree with you I was thinking more along the lines of using the Xilica to adjust just the FM Tuner channel I have created in the Xilica. Like maybe boosting the tweeters  or mids a little but, you are correct there is more to it and I think I am hearing some bass and that's what may be creating the muddy sound...

    Jay
