  1. Hi all, I'm in need of some expert advice. I have the opportunity to purchase a Servo 15 for $700 (canadian), it's in real nice shape but does not come with the X-30 controller,is the controller a must have ? Is this a good buy at this price?. Thanks, look forward to your input.
  2. Hi all, now this might seem like a dumb question, so here go'es. I have a pair of H/k 930's,and was wondering if there is a way i can effectivly use them both in a 2 channel set up?I will be using them with my Rf5's, which can be bi-amped. So what would be the approach to take.thanks.
  3. Throw on some Nickelback, it'll give your system a workout, and impress the kids in the neighborhood. love em, the longer i live, the younger i get..[]
  4. Your dead right Max, James Galway was a POP star in Britain when i was still there, "the man with the golden flute", you could'nt turn on the telly without seeing him. My wife has a cd in the car of his, do'snt play it much. But he sure can play...
  5. Hi all, i just started to get my garage system set up and straight away a problem. I have a Marantz 2220b reciever i would like to use, it was functioning fine when i parked it in the closet a couple of years ago, now it will turn on but no sound, the usual click that occurs a couple of seconds after turn on is not happening. Is there a likely easy fix, or could there be more serious problems. thanx...
  6. No, they are model 19, i wish i could get a pair of those for $60.
  7. Oh... man.. where were you before i went out and bought them, you might of saved me a lot of ear-ache. As it is, i now have to listen to them whenever i go out to my garage ! Nuh.. I guess i must have something of a tin ear, cos these thing sound pretty good to me, or maybe there suited to their location?
  8. Thanx Marvel, in fact i did find that site yesterday, but was having problems navigating. Went there again this morning and managed to find specs, i think they might be a worthwhile purchase for the $60 asking price, hey there altecs, how bad can they be for a garage system?? Seems they were Altecs top bookshelf at the time, although you would have needed one hell of a shelf, apparently they weigh in at over fifty pounds!.
  9. Hi all, i know some of you Klipschheads are also pretty knowledgable with Altec speakers, i also realise as these are not a horn speaker that they are not of great interest to many of you. However, google yielded nothing, nor a further hour of searching the interweb. They are a three way design, 12" woofer, 5"? mid, 2"? tweeter. I thought they might do duty as a garage system. they are sitting in the thrift store and the price "seems" right at $60 . They're in pretty good shape, in fact they look real nice, new surrounds look to have been done in a professional manner. So what do you think? Thanx in advance, John.
  10. I also agree with Paul, the pops and crackles get filtered out in my own head. But it seems to be an issue with other listeners, and as a kind considerate host i thought the least i could do was make some attempt to alleviate there concerns....NOT!
  11. How right you are Dave, take away the "issues" against vinyl and you have the opportunity to listen to good music at a fraction of the cost, and at the end of the day it is the music that counts. Though i do enjoy hunting for more goodies as well as the next person.
  12. jazman, i dont need to purchase a record cleaning machine, the one i have works perfectly well, and my rega is at least in the decent category. This was simply a $45 attempt to hopefully improve on an already decent set-up, so far so good. pops&clicks out. (hopefully)
  13. Picked up the sae 5000 impulse noise reduction unit, rather than have to get into my system i put together a rig using my recent thrift store finds. Kg4's, nad 7155 reciever, nad 5125 t/t with Mission solitaire cart/stylus. I figure if it works it matters little what i audition it on. Anyway.. nothing too technical, set up is no more difficult than plugging in a tape deck, found myself a suitably noisy old Lp at the thrift store (i wanted to give it a real test). Suprise, suprise it actually does what it claims, a definite reduction, even scratches are greatly reduced, i would'nt usually play scratched records at all, but i wanted to see if it would do as claimed. The quality do'snt seem to be affected unless you really crank up the sensitivity, then the sound suffers badly, but the reduction does increase. I think used sensibly i can have uncompromised quality and less snap crackle and pop! i'll check it out over the next couple of days then decide if it's going into full time duty. The unit does have a defeat button so it's easy to do comparisons or switch on only if needed.
  14. Good buy Allan, i was considering bidding on the same unit, but my wife vetoed that, "just how many amplifiers do you need". she has a point. I owned one a good few years ago and sold it when i left the UK, a nice sounding amp,i'm sure you'll be pleased with it
  15. Well thanks for the input, generally pops &clicks are'nt a problem to me, most of my lp's are in very good shape, but of course some noise seems to be ineviatable. I do use all of the methods available for cleaning and maintaining them. I think for the $45 i can get this unit for i will give it a spin, i'll report back on the results.
  16. Hi again all, has anyone any experience with any of the systems available for reducing pops and clicks on vinyl? I was especially interested in the sae 5000, only because ive got a lead on one locally but input on any would be helpful. thanks..
  17. Colin.. that nakamichi has probably been the biggest eye opener, i have never owned what some may call an audiophile deck, and this is obviously all of that, i've never heard cassettes or recordings sound as good. I do'nt know how much use it will get, but it's a keeper, sure is a nice looking piece.
  18. OK! OK! i get it.....Ive just quit smoking...
  19. Ahhh, those were the day's of real music, who can forget the great Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, and of course Olivia Neutron Bomb.... Nah just kiddin'.
  20. Thanx for the replies and the health warning. Seriously now i'm really knocked out by the find, especially the speakers.they are 1987, oiled walnut, consecutive numbers and they sound great. i'm no expert but they certainly have something that the rf5,s now seem to be lacking in ...bass, and they are not so harsh, much smoother.
  21. Hi all, day off today, so what better to do than hunt for vinyl at the thrift stores. one of my regular haunts usually has a regular supply of decent records, but today i definitly found more than i bargained for. This place do'snt do much in the way of electronics and they do'nt have anyone to test them anyway. but sitting in the storage area is a box full of electronics so i ask if i could take a look. No problem i'm told give us $75 take it home and look all you want. Well i've already spied a NAD reciever and turntable and can see the sides of a pair of speakers, so i part with the cash and wheel the box to my car and start loading. The speakers that had been un-identified till now turn out to be a totally mint and i mean MINT, pair of Klipsch kg4,s the reciever is a NAD 7155,. T/T is a NAD 5125 complete with Mission solitaire cartridge/stylus, and what a suprise hidden under all of this a Nakamichi Lx-5 cassette deck. Now i'm begining to feel a little guilty, so i pull myself together tell myself not to get excited, after all maybe none of this stuff works. 30 minutes later i'm home, another thirty minutes i feel even worse, everything works, and the speakers sound great. So tomorrow i will go back, and this time i'll see what vinyl they have, plus i'll take an envelope with a donation enclosed. Till then i'm gonna listen some more to these kg4's, first impression are that they could take the place of my rf5's!! Just one down side to this, that $75 was my beer and cigar money for this week.
  22. Well...That was a satisfying project. I worked slowly and carefully, and the results are well worth the effort, and...much less than the $129 per speaker quoted by the experts. The latter being the reason i thought the job might entail more work than i would be able to handle. It was important to me that these speakers were repaired but did'nt look as though they had been, mission accomplished, hope this helps anyone thinking of tackling this project.
  23. Thanks DRBILL, i'll give it a try. I picked up the new surrounds yesterday, i'll let you know how they turn out.
  24. Hi all,i was wondering if any off the DIY members had tackled the job of replacing rotted out surrounds, and would they recommend this job to an adept handyman, or is this best left to an expert? It is NOT a pair of Klipsch speakers but a pair of Marantz DS 930 12" woofers. Thanks in advance.[]
