  1. Well, I can't say that I'm in the same league as some of you folks, but I just picked up a second pair of Heresy's and am constantly on the lookout for a pair of Khorns or LaScala's for sale locally. My twice a day ritual is to visit this board then head to ebay and type "Klipsch" into the search field. I thought there was something wrong with me but I'm feeling better, now. The new reference 7 series really has me thinking about a total system overhaul. ------------------ --Elliott--
  2. Yeah, I was kinda wondering about that, myself. I had bid on a pair of 1.1's (46 available)at $75 bucks. Then, suddenly someone bids $100+ for all 46 of them. Seemed a little fishy but I thought maybe some dealer had bid on all of them and them was going to resell them on ebay or something. I am dubious about ubid. ------------------ --Elliott--
  3. I've never heard of XRCD, where can I learn more about it? ------------------ --Elliott--
  4. Yes, please. share more. I'm always on the lookout for rec's on exceptional recordings, no matter what the genre. A good recording can stop me dead in my tracks and have me listening to a type of music that I might never have given the time of day otherwise. I would have never thought that I would sit still for Diana Krall but, my goodness, it's like she's in the room with me (almost). I'm still looking for Patricia Barber, Cafe Blue. Noone around here seems to have it, but I hear it's quite the masterpiece. ------------------ --Elliott--
  5. Hey, Max. How do have your system set up. Room size? Distance from you to speakers/between speakers. Do you have your HII's on stands? How far off the side and rear walls do you have them. Just curious. I have a pair (actually 2 pair, now) of Heresy II's and have been experimenting alot with placement. I'd be interested to hear how you have things set up. ------------------ --Elliott--
  6. I will say, there is a vast difference between prologic and today's Dolby Digital 5.1 stuff. Simply no comparison. It's not, in the least bit, subtle. But again, if you're not watching things like the Matrix or Terminator or something, I can 100% see that 2 channel would be enough. There have several occasions where, when watching a "normal" movie, I had left the receiver in stereo mode from a previous session of music listening. About half-way through the movie I happen to look down at the receiver and see what mode it's in. Until then, I didn't even realize I wasn't in surround mode. As for multichannel music. I'm not certain if I'm on board with it yet or not. I've listened to a few recordings where, the rear channels were used only to add the ambience of the hall. I've thoroughly enjoyed those, but when they turn it into a gimmick where the instruments are coming from all around you. No thanks. Besides, part of the fun of two channel is hearing things coming out of thin air where there IS no speaker at all. It's like having a magic show in your living room. ------------------ --Elliott--
  7. If you're ONLY hearing voices from your center channel and occasional sounds from the rears......you're watching the wrong movies!!!! The center channel is the most active speaker in my surround setup and the rears are very frequently active. At least with action movies. I suppose if you watch less action oriented films, surround would be a bit underwhelming. All of my music listening is two channel but I wouldn't give up my movie surround for anything. To each his own! ------------------ --Elliott--
  8. I continue to experiment. Last night I decided it was easier to move me around than the speakers so I tried moving the sofa out and listening from different positions (and ear levels). I've also put some carpet on the sidewalls to at least slow down some of the reflections coming from there. I finally plunked myself down on the floor with my ears level with the tweeters and at a distance that was equal to the distance between the two speakers. Major improvement in both staging and clarity during the loud passages. The underlying ringing that is there (but I never really noticed until now) when sitting in the normal couch based listening position was either gone or significantly reduced. I'm convinced that, with some "real" room treatment and some speaker stands to elevate the Heresy's a bit I can make some significant strides without investing in new hardware, just yet. Although, the next time a pair of Marantz monoblocks show up on ebay, I may not be able to resist. ------------------ --Elliott--
  9. Let's say that you had appox. $1000 - 1500 dollars to spend on a two channel, cd only system for a smallish room. I'm pretty sold on a pair of RB-5's for the speakers (but would certainly entertain other (small) ideas) but what about amp/cd player. I have no interest in making this video capable or radio or anything other than a music only, CD system. Used gear is encouraged in order to make the most of my dollar. What are some older "nice" cd players to look out for? Amps? Preamp? How about a Zen triod tube amp set-up? ANyone have any experience with them? ------------------ --Elliott--
  10. Thanks to all for the very helpful comments. I've been spending some time messing around with speaker placement, moving them further out from both the rear and side walls. I've also moved the couch back about a foot. After nearly a full day of fiddling, things are markedly better but I think I still have a ways to go. Loud passages aren't nearly as bad as they were and I hear a fairly wide soundstage. Still, I really have no sensation of depth whatsoever. Everything appears to be pretty much on the same plane. I plan to experiment a bit more with placement this weekend but ultimately, I think I'm going to build some panels to tame the sidewall reflections that I'm certain are there and see how that affects things. Thanks again everyone! ------------------ --Elliott--
  11. I thought about doing some LaScala's up front but just don't have the budget for them at the moment. I'm using four Heresy II's and an RC-3 for the home theater portion of things right now. ------------------ --Elliott--
  12. I'm hoping to get some help with curing what I perceive to be a weakness in my system. Specifically, I don't think I'm getting the soundstaging that I should be under some circumstances. My system consists of the following components. Denon Av2801 receiver (rated at 90 watt p/channel), Pioneer DV525 DVD/CD player, and a pair of Klipsch Heresy II's. My room is 11x17x8 and the walls are wood panel (ie. highly reflective). Speakers are located on the short wall, placed 2 feet from the back and 14 inches from the side walls. I've played around with toe-in and placement quite a bit and I think I have them where they sound the best. Toe-in is at roughly 10-15 degrees I would guess. Floor is carpeted with the listening position at 8 feet from the speakers. The speaker are on the floor with the factory angled risers. I don't know how high this puts the tweeters but they are definitely below ear level when seated in the sweet spot. My issue. Soundstaging is really good during quiet passages with just a few vocals and 2 or 3 instruments (Diana Krall, for example). Everything is easily located in the soundfield although, there doesn't seem to be a lot of depth. In any case, things sound really good. However, when the music itself begins to get louder and more intruments begin to come into play, the soundfield just seems to collapse into a big mess. Things are still clear, there's no distortion or anything, it's simply that I lose the directionality for the individual instruments. Vocals will stay pretty well centered but it becomes difficult locate specific things in the soundfield the way I can when softer, simpler music is playing. This doesn't seem to be an issue between different recordings, since a single song that starts quiet will sound great until everyone else starts getting in on the act. Again, it's not that it sounds bad, I just feel like I'm missing something, or that it could sound better. I need to find some direction, I guess, on where to go next. More amp power? Work on room reflections? Better CD source components? Raise the speakers? Is this just the way it is? I really have not heard any truly high-end systems in my life so I suppose my expectations may be unrealistic for my system. I read so much about how great certain music sounds on certain system, though, and I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something substantial. As you can tell by the components I've listed, I haven't spent a great sum on my system and that simply reflects my budget which, like almost everyone else, is limited. I built this system primarily for home theater (although I've had the Heresy's for years) and for HT, I am very satisfied with the sound. I seem to be listening to more and more 2 channel music, though, and I know the Heresy II is capable of some very good sound. I'm simply want to be certain that I'm getting all I can out of what I have. Any suggestions for where to go next would be very much appreciated. ------------------ --Elliott--
  13. Ross, Heh...well, at least I'm not alone. I found the pictures you were referring to and that looks like the way to go. I'll be laying mine on their side as well since I don't want to have to worry about people conking themselves on the head when they walk in the room. My relatives are going to think I'm nuts when they see these things hanging off the wall. Heck, they already think I've fallen off the deep end on the whole home entertainment gig. Sometimes I wonder, myself. I'm begining to wonder if it ever ends. Will I ever be "finished" building this system. Frankly, I thoughtI WAS finished and had planned to start spending more money on software but then I see this pair of Heresy's and all reason just flys out the window. I know what's coming next, too. That RC-3 is just not cutting it against four Heresy's. I need to pick up another pair. That way I can use one for a center channel and one for 6.1 surround, cause I know I'll be looking at upgrading this receiver soon, I mean, it turns 1 year old on June 1'st for crying out loud. It's ancient!! I think my only saving grace here is that I can't get a Heresy within 3 feet of my TV without magnetic fields wreaking havoc. But wait, I can solve that problem with an RP TV or better yet, an FP! Oh the glory of an 8 foot screen with a CRT FP unit and Heresy's all the way around. I have a sickness. Please help. God Bless. Speaking of the Klpsch trip. I can't beleive I missed out on that!! I'm in Dallas, a mere 4 or 5 hours away. Hopefully there will be another someday and I can make it. It looks like you guys had a great time! ------------------ --Elliott--
  14. I bit the bullet and bought another pair of Heresy II's as surrounds. It's looking like I'm going to have to mount them either very high on the wall or on the ceiling and somehow angle them down toward the listening area. Anyone have any experience with mounting Heresy's? Any specific bracket or shelf design recommendations? I've seen several brackets that claim to be rated for 50lbs but they sure look weak when I think about them holding up a Heresy. I was going to go with a nice, simple to mount pair of RS-3's, but no....I had to have more Heresy's. I sure hope these things are worth it! ------------------ --Elliott-- This message has been edited by jelliott100 on 05-29-2001 at 08:07 PM
  15. Not a prob. I just wanted to be certain there was not some kind of unannounced price reduction on the Heresy II since I'm looking for a used pair. ------------------ --Elliott-- This message has been edited by jelliott100 on 05-29-2001 at 01:01 PM
  16. What are those under the Heresy's, bricks? Great Idea. I've been trying to find/construct some attractive stands for my Heresy's but so far, have not found anything that I like. Your solution looks great! ------------------ --Elliott--
  17. I'm a bit confused by the information in the products section of the website regarding the Heresy series. This link appears to detail the Heresy speaker with an MSRP of $770. I was under the impression that the Heresy I was out of production. Is this incorrect? Heresy This link shows the Heresy II with msrp of 1098.00. Is the Heresy I being returned to production or has the MSRP of the HII be lowered? Heresy II EDIT: Well, the copy and pasting of the links didn't work right. If you follow the navigation tree on the left through the heritage link to the Heresy link, you see the MSRP of $770 on the Heresy model. If you you click on the heritage link in the nav tree you get the Heritage line sub page with a link to the Heresy II which shows an MSRP of $1098.00 ------------------ --Elliott-- This message has been edited by jelliott100 on 05-28-2001 at 10:58 AM
  18. I'd love to pick up another set of heresy's for surrounds, I just don't have the space for them. Hmmmm...maybe a wall mount arrangement. LOL...my wife would have a fit. I haven't heard anything about how big the RS-7's are going to be, though, so maybe they aren't much smaller?
  19. I realize they are not out yet but I'm wondering if the RS-7's, being a larger unit would be a better tonal match for my Heresy II mains than the current RS-3's?
  20. Oh my room is dry......so dry. Where's IS that credit card....
  21. So let's say I'm shopping for surrounds to match my Heresy II's. I'd been planning on going with RS-3's. Would RS-7 be a better match? If so, dangit! I just bought an RC-3!!
