  1. Hey Carl, been wanting to hook up with you as well; I have become very interested in IB subs and I hear you have a system worthy of demo. I can drop wifey at the casinos and we can talk audio for a few hours. Rick
  2. Yes, Mike, I would enjoy that. Sent you email. Rick
  3. Hey Mike, thanks for the offer. Man, Khorns and VRDs...wow, what a killer combination! And all that juicy music, and vinyl, oh my. Talk about bad timing. Oh well I'll probably be back in the fall so maybe we can catch up then. Rick
  4. Our bi-annual trip to Rat-Town is next week, starting today in fact. Would enjoy breaking away from the pack and stopping by and sampling some high-end Klipsch systems. Will have rental car so don’t mind driving a short to get there. Will also bring libations of your choice and even spring for a steak to throw on your grill. If interested send me email through the forum or text/call me at seven 1 three ate 5 nine ate oh fore eight. Rick
  5. Thanks again Gary and artto! I have my work cut out for me. On the plus side, we may indeed be building from scratch so I have lots of freedom. I have to admit, though, that y'all are making me nervous with all that talk of EQ, DSP, delay, Audessy, etc., etc. I am and have been pretty much a 2-channel guy, preferring use of gear with not much more than a tube, a couple of capacitors and resistors, and a volume control. Heck I cringe if my amp has tone controls! Up until now, I have had pretty good success using that gear, but I suppose if I am going to step up to a much larger room and build my system around Khorns or Jubes, I am going to have to get some big-boy gear to go with it? Rick
  6. So, you mean you couldn’t sit far enough back from the front wall; you were worried that the direct sound coming from the K-horns would be behind you? Should they always be both pointing directly at you when you are in the sweet spot? It would really depend on the size and shape of the room whether that could be realized, huh? I have heard others talk about how when they had them on the long wall, without a center speaker, that the Khorns just disappeared, creating a perfect center stage. I don’t have any dimensions to go along with those comments, nor where they were sitting in relation to the Khorns. I have experienced that with Mallette’s setup; where your ears are dead center between the Khorns, and they do indeed disappear. But I would also consider the setup he had then as near-field. So I am wondering, in a large to very large room, do you still try sit in that directional sweet spot? Simply said, what is the geometry factor for the listening chair when listening to Khorns? I think that is very cool how you mounted the Belle. I will definitely remember that. I will probably have a large space behind the front wall; planning for infinite baffle subs, and maybe also built in equipment racks. Rick
  7. Thanks for the links Chris, I knew there would be plenty of discussions to be found here. And, yes, an IB sub is in the plan as well. Rick
  8. Thanks Gary. I think I know what you mean about sitting too far back. In fact, I enjoy near-field listening, at least with experiences I have had with my Heresys. Boy, that suggested book is pricey! Maybe the library will have it. So your present room is about the size of the Klipsch factory room. Noting the sloping ceiling, I assume you have the mains on the short (16.75 foot) wall? And at the end with the lowest ceiling height? Rick
  9. C'mon, somebody....all the knowledge on this Forum? Rick
  10. It's going all right, Dave. Slowly bouncing back from my audio hiatus, from early 2011. Been wanting to catch up with you; will be sending email. Rick
  11. OK I understand most of this, at least from a common sense perspective. A little puzzling though, is that I keep reading about the Golden Mean Ratio of 1 : 1.26 : 1.59, or slight variations thereof; but the rooms suggested in numerous papers, and in this thread, the 1 factor (the height) stays constant but the length and width dimensions grow significantly. For instance, with the PWK recommended rooms of 10’ x 17’ x 27’, in this document, http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/7/1807933/Room%20Dimensions%20for%20Optimum%20Listening%20PWK.pdf ), and the factory studio of 10’ x 16’ x 25’, in this document, http://community.klipsch.com/dope/Dope_680201_v9n1.pdf ), the height would have to be significantly higher to maintain the ratio. PWK did add a disclaimer that the height may not be as critical but the length and width ratios maintain some familiar and proven formula. And I understand the diagonal dimension of 32’ which, in ideal conditions, with the correct loudspeaker (Klipschorn), will allow you to reproduce a pipe organ in its entirety. I have heard very strong hints of this with Mallette’s K-horns in his modest listening room. I have limited experience with K-horns, but just listening to Dave’s made a believer out of me; they take music to a whole other level! Getting back to the architectural discussion, is the suggested room of 10’ x 17’ x 27’ optimum? What if you went larger? Is bigger better, or do you open up a new equation when you expand from the PWK formula? I have suddenly taken interest in this thread, and would love to have discussions on the subject. We have finally taking serious steps on building our dream home; and with that dream home comes Rick’s space, designed from the ground up as a dedicated music listening space primarily, and home theatre secondary. Needless to say, I am pumped! Rick
  12. Nope. The mono image appears dead center between my K'horns such that I have to make people put their ear right in front of a driver on the center Cornwall to prove it isn't working. I find mono sources an excellent, if counter-intuitive, test for stereo imaging. If it's right, you'll get an uncanny phantom source dead center. Dave You got me in stereo, too, Dave; I was commenting on how awesome the Cornwall was keeping up with the Big Horns, until you told me it wasn't even on! Rick
  13. Well I knew you guys wouldn't have much sympathy for me. However sunnysal's reply is close to what I was wanting to hear. Guess I shouldn't brag about my old ears; they are indeed getting old as the linked tests indicate. Testing through my computer speakers I am losing the high end somewhere between 14 and 16 kHz. But I do claim to have golden ears when it comes to listening to music reproduction. When something is not there when I know it is supposed to be there then I notice it. I strongly believe that harmonics add quite a bit to the overall ambience, whether we actually hear it or not. Rick
  14. Well I don't know exactly where my hearing cuts off, and I quote science, but I do know I hear a lot more information from some speakers than others; in the same room, with the same gear, with the same music. Interestingly, Klipsch' modern speakers are spec'd much higher; for instance the RF-7 II rated at 30Hz - 24kHz Rick
  15. Is it strictly limitation of the tweeter, or does it have to do with overall integration/synergy with the rest of the system; is the tweeter response held back intentionally? What can be done to achieve more extension on the top end of the Klipschorn? My 56 year old ears are in pretty good shape so I am missing quite a bit of top end. Rick
  16. I can’t tell what the white plastic things are; I found some photos on the Web but none of them show the tubes close enough to tell. First thing that comes to mind are vibration dampers but those usually just slide over the top of the tube and are situated about midway up or closer to the top. I guess just inspect it carefully and try to figure out the assembly. Maybe someone else with a Peach will chime in. Rick
  17. Hey rockhound! How you been? Hey with the scratchy sound and then loss of a channel I'm betting you have a bad tube. Looking at the specs of the Peach, and since only one channel went out, I am betting it is one of the 6922s. You can swap these two tubes and see if the problem goes to the other channel. I don't really have a good source to buy tubes, maybe others will chime in. I do know you can get those 6922s at Parts Express for cheap. They may not be the ultimate quality for your amp, but they should do fine to get you out of a crunch and to use as spares. http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?searchFilter=6922 Hey I'm gonna send you an email and catch you up on things with me. Later Rick
  18. Would like to hear some expert comments on IB subs in the loft area. Rick
  19. Great comments everyone; about what I expected. So most agree the recessed area may well introduce unwanted artifacts and do havoc with the bass. Another good point is that the LCR really should be on or near the same vertical plane. He is watching the thread and we definitely got his attention. He is not saying much but he did send a text and said “Looks like I gotta rebuild the room!” Well I don’t think it is that drastic but perhaps he can get there with some room treatments. Now I’ve gotta try to get him on board with some Klipsch Reference or Heritage speakers. Another scenario; what do y’all think about rotating the setup 90 degrees, where the front stage is on the solid wall? Rick
  20. I’m gonna have to agree with garymd and T.H.E. Droid on this one; for high-end 2-channel listening, you need 2-channel equipment! With all due respect to Dave; having heard his awesome system on multiple occasions, and every time I leave (in awe), I’m wondering how in heck he gets a surround system to sound that good, with a 2-channel source! But then again, Dave has forgotten more about this crazy hobby than most of us will ever know. Bottom line, IMHO, multi-channel ‘receivers’ have way too much signal processing and other nonsense going on to do justice to simply amplifying the signal and sending it on its way. Rick
  21. Posted some questions in Home Theatrer and also want to call on you 2-channel gurus... http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/166326.aspx Thanks, Rick
  22. Rear with seating. He now has a couple of game tables in the back behind the seating. Rick
