  1. 21 in Missouri. No idea what breaking off a switch is.... I've tried playing with the Denon volume level. With the qsc at 9 o'clock, the hiss is perfectly constant with the volume from -74 to +15. At -75 (lowest) it is decreased a little, from +15 to +18 it is slightly higher. I need to have the qsc at the absolute lowest volume setting to not hear hiss at my seat. It is a serious problem on any dynamic music. When I had the xti-2000, I had an art clean box. It bumped up the level fine, but I thought it worsened the noise floor. Maybe my Denon's pre-outs suck? It is DEAD silent with speakers attached, though. I've had 3 electrical engineering courses, and have no worries about replacing a fan, physically. But I feel like I'm buying a $30,000 camry, and spending $20,000 on a supercharger to go drag racing, instead of $50,000 on a Z06. Why not buy a product that was designed for and meets your needs unmolested? (I know fans aren't expensive. It's the jumping through hoops with fans, level adjusters, ridiculous LED's, XLR cables, ugly rackmount tabs... etc)
  2. Thanks for the info. When I wasn't impressed with the xti-2000 and read that guys were running jubilees off them, it made me wonder... I got a 4000 dollar scholarship today; maybe I'll do khorns+tubes....
  3. I'm probably giving numbers too much credit. (nearly all qsc/crown amps have SNR spec'd at 100, same as my GX3, which is why I abandoned the pro amp idea) But from reputable companies, you'd hope the specs would be a useful tool in amp shopping. I had the same problem when I tried an xti-2000 on my rf-7's. Noise floor was unbearable. Decided klipsch's are just way more efficient that the speakers those amps were designed for and not a good fit.
  4. The way my living room is setup (until May) leaves me zero flexibility with placement.(ports 6 inches from wall) After just a few toe-in adjustments, I'd say they're less picky than rf-7's I've had in the same spot, and more picky than kg4.2's I've had in the same spot.
  5. I bought klf-30's a week ago. I like it loud, and the denon sounded stressed, so last week I picked up a qsc gx3 pro amp. Power is awesome, but with sources off and the amp at 1/2 volume, I get an audible hiss/hum from 10 feet. (and I can hear the idle fan on the qsc from 20 feet) So, I've been looking for amps with a (really) high SNR and found the Emotiva UPA-5 @ >119db at 1 watt. I can bi-amp the klf-30's with 4 of the channels on the UPA-5 and should have some serious wattage. Any thoughts on the UPA-5? Any other amps in that price range worth considering? Are there other amp parameters involved with the noise floor? Thanks http://emotiva.com/upa5.shtm
  6. I've had various gear over the years, but today's purchase was good. I got a QSC GX3 at Best Buy for $299 It kicks ***. If you've been thinking about getting a pro amp, buy it. Why spend $400 on a 125watt used rotel, instead of $299 for a 300watt pro amp. Pics when I spend a few hundred on a camera instead of subwoofers and bourbon... not soon
  7. Umm, I think you may have missed those 10,000 threads. Very likely... I haven't been on here in a while, and when I was quite active, it was on the HT side.
  8. Stop whining about my purchase, and stop whining that no one wants to pay you more than you're worth.
  9. You need some coffee or something... Anyway, why don't people talk about the 3-way magic more around here? I've owned 2 pair of rf-7's, one dean g'd, and like these better. That midrange horn is unbelievable. By far the most realistic and natural reproduction I've ever heard, especially on percussion. You can feel an attack on a drum head as if there's a set in your living room. Sick I'm feeling a Dream Theater concert at about 4pm today...
  10. John, Don't you have enough speakers? You've had the valencia's for sale for half of my adult life...
  11. Saw them listed for $275. Called immediately, even though it was 10:30pm. Lady said she already had someone call and that they were coming to get them on Wednesday. I said, how about I come tonight and give you $320... Now they're in my living room Whoooo! 9.5/10, missing one badge, unbelievable
  12. Very nice review. Functional, and devoid of the meaningless language that plagues 95% of speaker reviews nowadays. (I sold a power conditioner the other day, and the guy said, "So do you hear a difference with the receiver plugged into it?" I said, "Well the bass is faster and the highs are more airy, NOT) Having owned 2 pairs of rf-7's, one dean g'd, it was particulary insightful. I've been thinking about getting some 63's for awhile now; have kg4.2's up front right now. For the record, they are absolutely killer for $200-300. I a/b'd them against my rf-7's several times, and sensitivity dominates the comparison, but depending on the recording, I preferred the kg's to the 7's, especially in the high end. It's just more natural on acoustic stuff. I could max out my spl meter at 126db with the rf-7's, and the denon with headroom. No way with the kg's. But, my 4 18" subs might have been supplying a bit of that 126 reading....
  13. Last week I came into possession of 2, QSC OT-300a 70-volt audio transformers. http://www.qscaudio.com/pdfs/ot300a.pdf I'd rather use them to make something cool, then sell them, and I remember that tube amps use transformers of some flavor. I know very little about tube amps, but have had 3 electrical engineering courses in the last 3 years, and know my way around electrical theory in general. Can I make a tube amp with these things? Where can I read about tube amps, operation, construction, etc? Are there any worthwhile "kits"? I don't need an integrated amp. Just a stereo amp that would end up driving klipsch's or possibly some full-range stuff. Thanks, Alex
  14. Bit-torrent. (Vuze, specifically) I know, it's illegal. I know, the record labels don't get my money. I know the millionaire musicians I download don't get my $3 I download thousands of songs a day and fill external hard drives. Eventually it'll be impossible to do, and I better have every song by then... Once I have a 5 figure income, I might consider buying the albums I really like, but doubt it. Flame on...
  15. The first link are mine. Good speakers, outstanding condition. I'd like for them to go to a forum member.
  16. Have to post here, because of the striking resemblance.. even though it's in HT. I bought black rf-7's and a black rc-7, absolutely MINT on CL last week for $600......
  17. You can use the ps3. I'm almost positive it has a digital audio out, which is handy. You can compare the SQ by using the digital out to your receiver, and the analog out (red/white), and see if you here a difference. I highly doubt you will, but its possible if the DAC's in the ps3 are better than your receiver, or vice-a-versa. Just make sure to use something that is supposed to be an audio output. (typical red/white composite connection, optical, or spdif (looks like an rca, but its digital)) I think the process of "amplifying" the signal before it goes to the headphones, and then amplifying it again is where the issue comes in. I'm not exactly sure about the signal strengths, but it kind of makes sense. BTW, I highly recommend klipsch headphones for the zune. I use them while I exercise, they rock.
  18. Bored?* For an M6 driver, I expected more... I sold my M3 a month ago, it was sad. I've never heard chorus's, but I have heard forte's and some of the other older stuff. I see no reason you can't. I also really liked kg1's, when I owned them; could work for surrounds, small enough to put on the wall, and not rear-ported. If you can afford the M6, just drop $1800 on 3 pairs of chorus's and be done....
  19. If you are using the headphone output on the zune to hook up to your receiver (presumably by an 1/8" to RCA cord), it will sound terrible. I had a roommate who said I was crazy. Then I played the exact same song on a cd player hooked up to my receiver, and then from his Ipod. No comparison
  20. Yes sir. Then sold the jeep to buy a bmw m3, then sold that to buy a dodge ram. Without sounding preachy, if there's one thing I've learned by the ripe age of 21, it's that most material things will either not satisfy what you thought they would, or will at least leave you wanting more. I highly recommend dogs
  21. I saw the ad, and called one of my buddies right away. I have no money, so I was going to have him paypal me, and I'd pick them up for him. My fiance overheard the conversation and said, "I"ll buy them for you" She goes, that's such a good deal! (Yea, she knows used prices for loudspeakers. Actually, she just remembers how much I sold my dean g'd rf-7's for a year ago) We drove over there in the tornado. I knew they'd be gone fast. The guy had a newborn, and the wife told him they had to go. He was loaded, didn't really care if he sold them for 1000 or 400 I went over with an extra 200 in my wallet to try to get the rc-7, and I did. YAY for me! No pictures yet, I'm moving. Haven't decided what to do with the kg4.2's that have had living room duty for a few months now... Garage?
  22. Hey guys, I bought MINT rf-7's and an rc-7 on CL last night for $600! WHOOOOO! Last time I owned a pair of rf-7's, I had them in my dorm room.... House should work out a little better. (The girls a floor below used to text me, guessing what dvd I was watching) Can't wait to get them hooked up.
  23. I want 1 also, so we can find a pair and split it. I need the oak oil finish. Let me know. Thanks, Alex
  24. I've been a klipsch fan for a long time, and my girlfriends dad got me the custom 1's for christmas. I ride a stationary bike a lot at the gym about an hour a day, and these are amazing. I highly recommend them. I'm sure this has been covered, but does anyone have back to back listening experience and a comparison between the custom 1's and the more expensive models? Thanks, Alex
  25. Thanks for the reply, I actually have 2 semesters. This semeser is supposed to be used to write up a proposal to the department about what I'm going to do, how I'm going to do it, who's help I'll need, how much space, and money I'll need etc. Next semester I "do" it, and present my findings. Traditionally, students don't really pick their topics. They team up with a professor and tag along with his current research. So I can do that, or try to persuade them that a random acoustics topic is worthy, or convince them that the research I'm already doing at work for 20hrs a week is worthy: Internship with a company that is developing highly semi-conductive carbon nanotubes for applications in thin film coatings for micro-electronics. lol. (I'm a glorified test tube cleaner) I'll update this thread with anything new along the way. BTW, I just read over the math for port end correction, and its pretty sweet. Anyone who's made a diy ported sub has seen the numbers, but the derivation is rather advanced. Also, the community's wishes would just be a part of the presentation, like a "what's next" section, not dictating my design really.
