  1. It is a media center as well, you also get to surf the net and check emails with it. My only issue with it is the fact that the remote is bluetooth not a deal breaker but annoying. I just got all my stuff set up to work with one remote ( X10 lighting, receiver, projector, etc..) but leave up to sony to do there own thing. Now it is back to 2 remotes
  2. The RF 63 will do just fine but if you think you might want and can afford the 83 then get them. You will not regret it. I do not quiet agree with the statment saying they need a lot of power, in fact that is one of the 2 major improvement of the 83's over the 7's If you can I would consider a different sub, I think you can get a much better one for the price. The receiver is your biggest delima, I would not spend mega money on something which will be outdated in 2 months. If you are going to spend over $ 1500 for it, you should take a hard look at separate brands such emotiva and outlaw. You will be cover on the power side and with there trade in program you will be able to keep up with the changes for fairly cheap. The rear speakers on a 5.1 are indeed positionned on the sides, only the 7.1 has speakers in the rear. DO NOT trade the RS 42 for bookshelves on a 5.1. On the same note going from the RS 42 to the 52 may not make a big difference but if you can get the RS 62 you will be in Heaven.
  3. I really like both, but the HK has a warmer sound which is giving it an edge for music while the Pioneer has an easier interface. If movie watching is your main interest stay with the Pionner
  4. Very few people will actually admit that, but don't let it fool you because that is excatly why they do it most of the time. I would say if you are watching TV with a stereo signal like most channels are and you are doing a lot music listening, go for the RF 5. The towers all around is well worth it for music But if most of the movie watching is from DVD's Dolby digital/ blu ray stay with the RS 7
  5. I have listen to both the a a2-300 and the sub 12, both are really good for the money. You can t go wrong with either one
  6. space is not an issue unless you get like this
  7. Here we go again. a 7.1 system is made for large rooms allowing sufficent distance between you and the rear speakers but you do not have that kind of room. I did the test between RS 42 on the side with RB 61 in the back and RS 42/52 all arround. There is a mojor improvement with the RS speakers over the RB type if you are seating as close as you are. Go with the RS 42/52 you will be happier.
  8. X-mas?? Nah , you won't last that long. Look into the sub 12, it is the best bang for the buck It should keep you happy for awhile without breaking the bank, so you can go on to your next upgrade [6]
  9. Guys, I don't think he is trying to convince any one about the benefit of those shielded cords, you can think what you want, but if you have been thinking about buying one of the brand name power cord David is giving you a better price for a better quality cord. His cords are well made with attention and care to the details.
  10. that recommendation is to be discussed, I do not always agree with it as the size of the room will greatly affect the type of speakers you should use as rear
  11. I should have added Regardless of where you are going to be placing your RS 42 they should be hooked up to the surround outputs of the receiver not the rear outputs. You would use the rear outputs if you were going to added a second set of RS 42 or some bookselfs speakers
  12. I'm not sure I undertand this right but are you asking if you should either have rear speakers ( last 2 channels of a 7.1) or the surround speakers ( side refered as 5.1)? FYI a 3.1 would the 3 front and the .1 is the sub With most standard DVD 5.1 Dolby digital, the 2 side surround channels are matrix to created a signal. that signal is then sent to a rear speaker, that is knowen as the 6.1 system. To meet the needs of bigger rooms that matrix signal was split in 2 and then sent to the 2 rear speakers ( 7.1). If you elimante the surrounds and keep just the rear speakers your system would be totally out of wack. The rear speakers are optional not the surround speakers ( side) They are very few movies with real 6.1 signal, gladiator being one, I do not know any movies having a true 7.1 signal
  13. Dang, I just got home with the RS 62 those things are huge. I just thought about this, how about I bring the modded RC 7 down next time so you can see how you like it?
  14. It is like a sleeve, you slide it over the cable. It works like the snakeskin which you can use to dress up your cable. Take the standard cord, or buy an unfinished one if you want to get a bigger gage, slide the shield over then dress it up with black snakeskin, add the plugs on each end. Not that hard to do and farily cheap for a good result.
  15. So funny you are asking that, I just got off the phone talking to inventor about doing that test. As stated previously for the RC 7, I'm still thinking the X-overs upgrade makes the 7 serie a lot more smoother close to what the RF 83 are. My suggestion has always been if you have the 7 do the upgrade, if you are going to upgrade speakers then go for the 83. I have always been hard press to hear the difference between the RC 7 upgraded and the RC 64. My next plan is to run a test between the RS 62, RS 52 and the RS 3 and after get back from trip I'm planing to run an upgraded RF 7 vs a stock RF 7 and an RF 83. I will let you know what we found out
  16. I should have mentionned one thing, the RF 7 sounded great with or without the power cord upgrade.
  17. or you can use this link As I said I would not go out and spend the money on a monster, audioquest or any other brand of power cord, but building it with the right material for a minimal cost ( > $ 15) that I would do.
  18. Inventor will shime in at one point or the other on this one but until he does... I was over his house yesterday with another forum member and our spouses to run a few test on power cables. (Iventor and I had done the test before but we wanted someone else to hear it) Shielded cables do make a difference, the main difference was in the video with much better color and richer. We also heard differences in the sound from the stock power cord to the shielded one, even our spouses did. We did the test with the a power cord for the sub as well but I could not hear any differences on this one. Is it worth to spend a $1000 on a power cord ? I do not think so but if you can build it yourself you will not be desappointed. However, you are correct I suspect that the improvement is not going be worth thousand of dollars if you already have a power conditioner which is doing a lot of the clean up.
  19. I had a system with all towers ( RF 3 II) but the center was still a RC 7 so I really do not know how a RF 7 would perform as a center speaker. I know what you mean about the RC 3, I have a few of those laying the house ,it is not in the same league of center channels but neither is it's price. The 7.1 system is made for bigger size room, I would say go for it. Regarding what speakers you should use for the 2 rear channels, I had a better result with all WSTD type speakers for movies I ran a test with RF -7, RC 7, RS 42 on the sides and RB 61 for the two rear channel. We replaced the RB 61 with RS 52 and the difference was incredible, for that matter the owner end up taking down the RB 61 and replaced them with RS 42 later. I do not know if it was because the room is not as big as yours and the RB 61 were just to close to the listening position but we both agreed it sounded better with WSTD Speakers. I know what most people are saying but we tried and that what we came up with.
  20. May be the superbowl got people busy. To answer some of your questions I have a stock RC 7, a RC 7 with a Dean X-over rupgrade and the RC 64. You will be hard press to hear to hear the difference between the last 2. The RC 7 is a ported speaker but the RC 64 is not , it might be a problem for some. I would try to get a RC 7 if you can, but the RC 64 would do just fine. For the surround the RS 7 are the perfect match but hard to find, the new RS series took the WDST speaker to a new level. Give them a shoot I ran a test with the RS 3, RS 42 and the RS 52. I could not believe the improvement with new the 42 and 52 over the old RS serie. I will be picking a set of RS 62 tonight to complete the test and I let you know. If you want to use a RF 7 tower for the center I might be able to help you. I have a black , a maple and a cherry RF 7, but I'm going to be in Europe for 3 weeks so you will have to wait
  21. If you have all the pieces what you can do is go to home depot get a small wooden rod which will fit right in the hollow pegs. Slide it in place then cut it to the need it length, glue the all thing back together with gorilla glue. I fixed mine 4 years ago that way and I never had another issues since. As a preventive measure you can do the same on the non broken pegs as well
  22. I already ran a test between the RS 3II, KSF S5, the RS 42 and the RS 52. I will try the RS 52 vs the RS 62 sometimes this week. I did not notice much differences between the RS 42 and the RS 52. The KSF S5 did not even get near those 52 The RS 3 did better but the 52 was still major improvement
  23. I have done the test between a RC 3, a RC 7, a RC 7 with dean X-over upgrade and the RC-64. No need to say the RC 3 was not in the same league. The normal RC 7 is not as smooth as RC 64 but it is more revealing and little more harsh. I could hardly hear a difference between the RC 7 with the X-over upgrade and the RC 64. You will not be disappointed with either one regardless. One thing I rarely see being discussed is the fact that the RC7 is a ported speaker and the RC 64 is not. I did noticed a differeence in the bass, the RC 7 being better to me.
  24. I will let you know soon as I have the RS 52 and I'm picking up a set of RS 62 tomorrow
