  1. Well I just purchased another pair of lascalas for center use so my newly finished vertical cornwall clone has to go. The cabinet is made out of 11 ply birch covered in ropey cherry to the exact specs taken from here on the forums. It has all the components of a standard cornwall. k77, k600 with k55v, and a brand new k33 woofer from klipsch. The crossover is a type B from Bob that I also installed. I just finished this a couple of weeks ago and you can still smell the hand rubbed poly. The only place where it differs is I used normal grill cloth instead of the fabric. Asking price is 350 local pickup only, cash and if using paypal add 3%. Here are also some pics. Also forgot to mention the motorboard was cnc'd by popbumber so the cutouts are perfect!
  2. I just let the wife buy what she wants within reason. Plus I usually get rid of something when I get something else. As we talked about Jeff I could spend my money on worse things and unhealthy hobbies!
  3. I wouldn't go with either of them or any current blu ray player besides the ps3. No current player on the market is BD live capable as it is not a mandate until after Oct. I think. If you do not know what that is it is Blu Ray's interactive features specification. The reason I would only go with the ps3 is that it is the only one that has the possibility of being updated with the spec via its firmware capabilities. Also the ps3's video decoding is software based unlike a player hardware based which allows it to be updated with new capabilities as they come out.
  4. Jeff, I'm sure it was a chore getting home but I'm glad you made it ok. The wife and I really enjoyed getting to meet you. I could have talked all night about our topics of conversation. I couldn't ask for the cornwalls to find a better home and someone who will enjoy them more than you. Also looking forward to seeing you this fall when you swing up to Shipshawana. Lastly you are an excellent woodworker. If anyone ever has the chance to meet Jeff take a look at what he can do with woodworking it is truly amazing. The table he made is a piece of fine art. Also his paintings out of wood I think it is called tarzia are truly great.(Not sure of the name Jeff) Any way enjoy the cornwalls and it is of to my next project!
  5. Southern, They where rather ugly when you saw them nothing a lot of time and work couldn't fix and thanks for the compliments.
  6. As far as the technique I used in veneering the speakers I used a high solid contact cement. The veneer is from oak wood veneer in Michigan and it is a 22.2mil paper backed veneer which is pretty thick for veneer. I tried the iron on heat lock method on my custom rf7 center channel, but did not care for it. The only downside to contact cement is once one piece comes into contact with another there is no moving it so it has to be lined up on the money the first time. The use of dowel rods in between the veneer and substrate highly help in the aligning of the veneer. As far as the filling in the dings before applying the contact cement I used minwax high performance woodfiller which is like bondo for wood. If you notice in the pictures I did cover up the stamped serials with veneer, but I have the klipsch tag off the back for one of the speakers as the other did not have one. You can go here to read up on the type of veneer used. http://www.oakwoodveneer.com/products.html Look at the construction of the 22.2 paper backed veneer.
  7. Well I plan on purchasing another pair of lascalas to redo so my newly veneered cornwalls have to go. I veneered these in ropey cherry and clear coated with wipe on poly, built custom risers, replaced the caps with sonicaps from Bob,replaced the speaker cloth, and also replaced all the internal wiring with 14 guage monster cable. The serial numbers are 24U750 and 24U755 which makes them built in 1980. I'm asking $900. Local pickup in Fort Wayne, IN as I will not ship these. Included are pics of the outside and inside of the speakers.
  8. I should have a few more pictures of them here in a few hours. I just got them home and I'm working on putting them back together and and finishing the speaker grills. It took every bit of 2, 4x8 sheets of cherry to finish the lascalas. As for already having them done, most people go someone where on their vacation, I stay in my dads workshop for 10+ hours per day. If it wasn't for my vacation it would have took a few months to finish the project working a little here and there.
  9. Greg, Great work as always! Your website is great with the step by step process of restoring speakers. It is definitely a time intensive hobby, but the final product is well worth the effort. I too use the paper backed veneer from oak wood veneer. They are a great company to work with and there veneer is first rate.
  10. Thanks for the compliments. This is my fourth veneering project. The first was a custom rf7 center, then a a pair of 81 cornwalls, a custom vertical cornwall center, and then these. I used 20 mil paper backed veneer with contact cement on these. It is impossible to get the iron inside the back of the bass bin! All the veneer I use I get from oak wood veneer in Michigan. The goal of the redo was to make them look modern as when I got them my wife though they where ugly. That was why I chose the black accent on the bottom. It contrasts the natural cherry very well. I love the look of cherry with just a clear finish on it . If I did it over I probably would have just painted the whole inside of the bass bin black as it is a serous pain to veneer, definetly not for the faint of heart. All the cuts have to be right on as there is no room to trim after the pieces have been attached. Also getting the two pieces of veneer to meet up and look right on the curved front edge of the bass bin took the most time. The trim on the top for the grill frame is quarter round all cherry hardwood trim.
  11. Here is another pic. I still have a few more coats of poly and have to finish up the grills. I forgot to take before pics, but the outsides were in bad shape and one of the woofers was shot, but I did purchased them from the orginal owner who said they had spend all of there lives in his basement.
  12. Well I got lucky and snagged a pair of beat up 1977 lascalas at a garage sale over the weekend and just finished veneering them in cherry and putting a couple coats of wipe on poly on them.Luckily I was on vacation this week as I have worked the last four days for about 11 hours and up a day on them since Sunday. I will post more picks when they are completely finished. I already had all the refinishing supplies as I was planning on purchasing a pair of lascalas. I have to thank Greg for the inspiration as he is my idol when it comes to refinishing anything.
  13. The speakers have been sold to Craig. He just got done picking them up and I got to meet his wife and new born son also. Really great people. Hopefully he enjoys the rf7's as we demoed them with music and movies and I will miss the rf7 setup for movies. We will see how much when I finish of my heritage ht!
  14. Groomlakearea51, Sorry I just refinished a pair of corns and I'am almost finished with a custom vertical cornwall center. I wanted to go khorns, but our new house is just not going to have the corners located at the right spots for the khorns, So I decided to go to the next best thing which is a pair of lascalas. The wife said I cannot keep 2 surround systems. I also have one more pair of maples and a custom rf7 center in maple that I'am going to keep and right now they are on lone to my dad. The other pm's have been replied to. If Craig does not want them Bill H. is next in line. Southern, Glad to see your enjoying the 7's. They are an excellent home theater speaker and also great for 2 channel. Once you hook up the svs it will make movies that much better and the wife that less happy!
