  1. Still agree that an upgrade would be the cleanest way to go. But a couple of bucks for resistors vs the cost of a new avr with pre-amps. Maybe not that much hassle?
  2. I would agree with everyone here that an upgrade is in order. BUT..... You can take your speaker level outputs and knock them down to line level. This is very popular in adding aftermarket amps to existing car stereos. I am unsure of the available devices to do this, but Carver made such an animal years ago. I Believe it was a model number like Z1 or ZL1. It was designed to be used with up to 5 channels. I used it on a pro-logic receiver that pushed out 150 per channel to the front three and had a single 150 to split between the rears. The surround channel was a series config inside the avr resulting in an 16 ohm load and my rears could not keep up with the fronts. I picked up the Carver device from Crutchfield, knocked the rear channel down to line level and then did a Y spliter to another amp to achieve a higher output. The rear on pro-logic was mono so there were no issues. If you could find one of these devices you could do the same. With the right value and wattage rated resitor you could also do the same.
  3. All right, I'll say it. Love the twin racks. Manufacturer?
  4. Thanks for the pics. You are really able to gain some seperation between them. I would be sitting about 10-12' away with about 9' between the stacks. I have found that my preference is for them to lined up with out any toe-in. With my KLF's I have always toed in, but the forte's give me the same imaging, maybe better with a wider soundstage. With the stack I believe the height will match the width.
  5. That sounds like the same effect that I am looking for and somewhat achieved with my experimentation. I have a Emotiva XPA-5 on order which I would use four of the channels to drive 4 of the speakers(2L and 2R) and the fifth channel would be for a center for ht. Artarama, can you post any pics of yor setup? What did you do about the stability of your stack? I have taken the risers of of mine which seemed to give it a little less of the concert hall feel. Thanks for yor input.
  6. I have not had the pleasure of hearing them yet. I was hoping that a pair would be there. The dealer that had the H III's set up had a picture of them on their brochure. There was another set of speakers there with massive mid horns. The T-1.3 Reference. They offer what appears to be "classic audio reproductions" www.classicaudiorepro.com . Neat stuff! They played some Duke Ellington thru tubes. Several months ago a local dealer had the P's in and had a demo night with the Klipsch chopper included. I had my children that evening so I could not attend. Next time.
  7. One more thing to add..... Emotiva is there with a 2 ch and ht set up. 15% discount on most amps, shipping on next Tuesday.
  8. I have tried it on top of other speakers such as the H2's and the C2's. I do get the height but lose the complete top to bottom effect. Also when they are further from the floor the bass does thin out some. I have tilted them on the floor such as the Heresy with a slanted riser which retains the level of bass and raises the image somewhat. Marshall does seem like an extremist and I mean that in a good way. A man with passion and toys! It would be very difficult to duplicate his set up with my meager means. With what I have on hand it hs been interesting to see the different results. The plan would be to stack the f2's, run them on as L & R, each speaker driven by a seperate channel from a dedicated amp. Possibly my Academy or a Quartet for the center for ht.
  9. It would not be just for extra bass although I would expect it. I visted Groomslakearea51 last week and he has Khorns with a set of Heresys stacked on top and with his setup he can make the sound taller if you will. It was a pretty neat effect. I started experimenting with what I had at the house(Chorus II's, Forte II,s and Heresy II's). I tried different versions of stacking and I acheived the effect of raising the sound, although not smooth or a good match. The best was with the c2's on the bottom with the f2's on the top inverted. obviously the same mid but tweeters are different. My idea was to get the same model to do this with. I did stack my f2's together in this manner with the c2's on the other side and attempted to isolate the f2 sound. I would descibe it as effortless with improved dynamics at a much lower volume. I guess that might be the cornwall sound. Just about everything I have read on the cornwall is about the incredible bass while the forte I have read good bass and awesome mids. I do love the mids, and it seems better balanced than my c2's. That may be because of the limited power I have on hand to fed the C2's. I am open to any suggestions and do's or dont's. So that I can learn from this can the suggestions given with theory? I look forward to all input!
  10. Well I made the trek to the AXPONA show today. A couple hour drive each way. It is sponsered by Stereophile so I expected it to be a little stuffy. I did get a kick out of listening to people who like to hear themselves talk, elevated speakerwires, and other gadgets that just make you go hmmm. All in all I enjoyed myself. I got to see, hear and touch gear otherwise I would only see in a magazine. Each merchant got their own suite to show off their products and some paired up. My favorite rooms were as follows: 3. Eggelston Andra III speakers with hugh tubes. I cant remember the brand but they sure were pretty! Diana Krall was amazing. 2. Legacy Audio Helix towers($60k) with 1000watt built in subs with the mid bass, mids, and highs tri-wired to a Mcintosh 300 x 3 amp per side. SRV's guitar was there. I would compare it to seeing a 3D movie and believing you can touch it. 1. YG Acoustics Kipod($65k) being pushed by Krell 400 watt amps and related Krell gear. The zero noise floor to the incredible dynamics. The headroom on those amps must be epic. It was the best imaging, smoothest and most dynamic setup there. One local vendor had a set of Heresy III's present but set up on a short wall. You were only about 5' away for the demo so it was hard to get a feel for what they could do. They were the only Klipsch that I saw there, but as I had conversations with guests as well as vendors and mentioned my preference, most had stories to tell of prior Klispch ownership and disapointment that they had not kept them. If your in the area I would recomend an afternoon out. Neat stuff!
  11. I am considering upgrading my amplification that I currently use to push my forte II's. I expect to pick up a second set of forte II's and run them together, no sub. I believe my Marantz rated at 125wpc will run out of gas. I have read that the typical avr will run at 50-70% of its rated power when running multi channel so the actual wattage would be ? I am looking at the Emotiva line up and they would appear to run a true 125 at 8 ohms for the UPA series or 200 for the XPA series. Does anybody have experience with any of these combos or similar? Thanks
  12. Is anyone on the forum going to the AXPONA event in Jacksonville this weekend? I must say that I think it would be something to see all of the ultra highend gear. Kind of like going to an exotic car show.
  13. I would like to publicly thank Groomslakearea51(and his family) for today's hospitality. I met him for the first time today along with Willland today as we replaced the caps in Bills H I's and sampled a varity of music on the "wall of voodoo". In a word, wow! Marshall was kind enough to have us in on his birthday. Bill brought his friend Sam Adams and I brought cash as I picked up his H II's that he had advertised on the forums. They were as advertised of course. A fun and educational day!
  14. What would be the major sound difference if you ran the receiver in "stereo mode" vs "pure direct mode"? I would believe if you left all of the tone controls, etc. at the neutral settings you could then add you sub. My avr experience has been primarily with Onkyo and Marantz but thats what I have been able to do with favorable results to my ears.
  15. I did notice that the CII, FII and the Quartet all use the same mid. The Heresy II uses the same tweeter as the Quartet. I would consider a Quartet but they seem rare to come buy at a premium price and the available parts for them also seems slim. Also it is just a little too tall for under my TV stand. I have used the Academy in a verticle position and seem to like it better than horizotal. This was also true of a KLF-c7.
  16. Has any one tried a Heresy Center with Chorus II or Forte II Mains? I currently have an Academy but am thinking of a 3-way center, verticle in orientation, and small enough to fit under my tv table. I have thought about a f II between the C II's but it is too tall and if I were to place it horizontal I would want to rebuild the motor board for the horns to still aligin horizontally. Thanks for the input.
  17. I have a pair of Chorus IIs that I push with a Marantz 8500 avr. Clean sound but lacks the punch I would expect with 15's & passives. I borrowed a friends Crown Xti 2000 to see what I was missing with the Marantz and had noise problems from the start. I used the Marantz as the pre-amp. A loud hum was heard from both speakers as well as a turn on pop. I figured the hum was a ground loop so I used used a universal power cord with the ground removed and a set of directional rca's and still had the hum. I disconnected the inputs to the Crown and still had hum. Once the Crown was turned on an hum was present, even if you shut it off the hum remained. I talked with the owner of the Crown and he had no problems with it before or after it was in my hands. He does run only pro gear for everthing in his home but I can't see how that makes a difference. Bottom line for me was disapointment. I picked up a pair a Forte IIs that sound much better on my Marantz than the Chorus IIs. Keep amp searching or settle for the Marantz/Forte combo? Fustrating to say the least.
  18. I had purchased a mid for the 20 as I had plans to do a 20 center channel. I have passed on the project so it is available if you are interested. I also traded a set of the tweeters to a local speaker repair shop for other parts and give you their number. I would check with Klipsch parts first and see $ and availability. PM me if interested. Good luck.
  19. Scoobinater, The finished project looks great. I have a pair of dull looking Chourus IIs in the walnut oiled. Is that the same finish as yours? Is you method you brought the finish back to life a standard proceedure for the veneer on these cabinets? Thanks
  20. Thanks for all of the replies. I was offered by a friend to demo his crown amp next weekend. I will give it a run and see the difference it provides from my Marantz receiver. I would like to take the better amplification plunge so a free weekend with an amp cannot be turned down! Groomlakearea51, thanks for the invite. What a collection you have. Most of what you have I have never heard. When I know I have some time a field trip is in order.
  21. Hello all. I am considering upgrading my amplification for the front 2 channels of my current system. As I have read peoples system profiles as well as disscussed it locally, I am curious why some people choice home audio products from companies such as Emotiva and Outlaw while others take the pro audio route with amps from companies such as Crown. The pro seems to me more resonably priced which suprises me. The Emotiva XPA-2 lists at $799 vs the Crown Xti 1000 which lists at $499 at Parts Express. They seemed to be have similar power specs at 4 & 8 ohms. The difference that I did pick up on that the Emotiva specs are from 20-20khz vs the Crown being speced at 1khz for all measurments. Experts, please weigh in on what you use and why! Thanks
  22. I am currently using C7s as surrounds in my set up(5.0). I am in an apartment with the couch on the back wall with the surrounds flanking, and I have them aimed at the TV. Not a recomended set up by any means but it still works. The 7s replaced a pair of the KT-LCRs and are sitting on top of custom made pedistols similar to an Atlantic Technology system. If you are in the middle of the couch as I typcally am, good for music. They are alot of speaker for surround but do match up great with the rest of the KLF series.
  23. Well what started as a curious 2 channel purchase has now expanded to a possible HT set up. A week ago I found a set of Chorus IIs on CL for $325. They are in fantastic condition and I have been enjoying their sound although at this time I feel my amplification is not up to the speakers wants. I have a friend who is going to loan me a Crown Xti 2000 for the weekend and we will see how it sounds. Today I completed deals found on CL and Ebay local to a pair of Forte IIs and an Academy center. The Fortes were $300 and the Academy was $299. They both are black in color and the cabinets do net some TLC, but are great sounding. All told a 5.0 set up for $924 plus a couple gallons of gas. The TLC needed to bring today's purchase back to new looking should take a few hours and maybe $30. I am now running KLF 20s with a modified KLF 10 for the center with 2 KLF C7s for surround. I will compare the two and most likely just keep one. This set up sounds terrific but the itch to try something else was too great. I will play around and see which set wins!
  24. I have typically used mine in a verticle arangement. It is much better off axis, but even directly in front I preferred it verticle. I went so far as to build a new box with the tweeter on top helping to heighten the sound stage because the speaker was in the lower half of a cabinet. I did experiment with it verticle on a stand and away from the wall 18-24" and that was the best, but didn't pass the waf test. No problems now though!
  25. Stormin, Thanks for all the info. Have you done anything to yours like crossover upgrades and are you 2 channel only? Can others can weigh in on what amplification they use with Chorus IIs and How many use them for 2 channel and/or home theater please?
