  1. Yes I did. Now they are all changed around but sounding so much better.
  2. Are there any plans or construction notes or pictures for either of these?
  3. I would also appreciate any slotted port lascala ideas.
  4. I can vouch for the pride of ownership thing. My friends tell me they are great but they probably don't want to hurt my feelings. I like them anyways (friends and speakers). Ignorance is bliss.
  5. I like the look. Reminds me of some of the oler 60's cabinets. I may inlude a top on my lascala project. Thanks for the picture.
  6. You were asking about finishing products. I just saw an article that reminded me that my Dad used to use Briwax. I know it is a little late for this project but here it is. http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/Ezine/Public/IndustryInterview.aspx
  7. Very cool. I may need to build my own set of horns for the next project. Your thread inspires me. It is the sustained effort that is my problem. Nice work.
  8. Welcome to the party. This is a great sound for not a lot of money. I have another pair to build for a friend.
  9. This is my plan. I will enlarge the hole and biuld a wood rim and a flange with a 3/4 inch set back.
  10. For the other members in the middle of cornwall projects, I forgot to detail the attachment of the stands. I used corner blocks in the stands and drilled four pocket screw holes in the blocks to attach the stands. The kreg self taping screws did not require pilot holes in the cabinet. I also painted the inside of the arch in the stand black to hide the plywood edge. I will post a pic later. Let me know if you want pictures of any other details an I will post pics. Good luck and I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
  11. Yep. Drilled a shallow hole in the grill with a forstner bit and set the magnets with some epoxy. Used some short flat head screws and dish shaped washers on the motorboard. I put some chalk on the magnets and placed the grills to mark the screw hole locations. Much better than velcro.
  12. I bought the individual stereo remasters that were originally released in stereo yesterday. I may buy the mono set a little later. They do sound great. I would have liked hdcd or sacd versions. I hope they master the vinyl directly from the analogue tapes rather than from the digital remasters. If only I had some brains when I was young. My much older brother had all the first run german pressings that he got when my dad was stationed in Germany. He would play them once to record them to reel to reel and store them. In my early teens while he was away at college, I got a hold of the lps and ruined every one with my first turntable which had a really old bad ceramic stylus mounted in an old mono cabinet hifi. Sad. My brother was cool rather than killing me he took me out and i spent my paper route money on my first real stereo. Technics turntable, receiver, and bose 501 speakers. End of ramble.
  13. Herb, I have the spu classic from the late 90s. I can't imaging what some of the better spu's sound like. I think I have found a group of components that just go together. The mid range quality of the spu seems to match up well with the horn. Bass seems more controlled with turntable/spu source. I should be working on the la scalas and other speaker projects but the new beatles remasters sound to good. Hope they come out on vinyl and are mastered from the analogue tapes.
  14. Very cool project. Nice finish work. Welcome to the journey. You will not believe how good they will sound when you get them dialed in. Listening to van morrison moondance on a td 124 with an spu right now. Truly impressive.
  15. It's not the digital worms, it's the vinyl blight. My discs are all rotten now. It's not the worms, blight or the rotten discs, its the computer server virus.
  16. Does the la scala horn require a crossover change if it is used in the cornwall?
  17. Dave, Nice work. I like the removable motor board. What is your thinking on flaring the tweeter hole verses flush mounting?
  18. Anyone got any experience with Zu cables?
  19. Herb, Nice turntable in the avatar.
  20. Dave, With my home made adapter there was some clearance and with the K52 adapters there was no clearance. I could not hear the difference between loading and not loading. The horns in the la scala and the khorn do not have any pressure other than a support arm. What is the theory on loading? Would a compressable material (rubber) mounted to the back provide the pressure? Or maybe a cross member in the cabinet attached to the horn?
  21. I remember discussing the flush mount. I am glad you tried it. This may be my choice for the cornwalls I just got from jtnfoley. These also have K57 drivers that will require adapters. A friend has heard my last ones with new cherry veneer, your horns and crossovers and wants to buy them. Can not sell them until I replace them. The more time I spend listening the more I enjoy them. My wife stills asks me to turn them down, but I am not as bothered because the horn sounds so much better than stock at lower volume levels. Great work.
  22. I have been to Ogden a few times to ski. I wanted to try to get away to visit the local Zu showroom but the snow was to good. I heard a pair of the druids in New Hampshire at Fidelis in Derry, NH a while back. They sounded very good, but different to my tastes. Sme claim that klipsch horns color the sound. I do not hear this but I did notice a specific sound coloration from the Zus. But this one situation, one set up, on one day, in a show room. I do not know if they have since gotten any of the newer models. For what it is worth, I really enjoy my Zu 103 cartridige.
  23. Pointy. It amazes me that this technology still sounds so good.
  24. Check out the pictures I found on another board.
  25. I have two td124 set up right now. I sold one to a friend. He brought it back to me for a cartridge alignment so it is sitting in place of my cd player for testing. His has an origin live modified rega 250 arm with an ortofon M2 black. I have tried multiple configurations with both tables including the following equipment. Rega 300 tonearm with techno weight SME 2009 SII improved tonearm Bluenote B5 tonearm Vintage Empire Tonearm Zu 103 Micro benz ace h Dynavector 10x5 Vintage signet MC Vintage ADC Ortofon M2 Black, Blue Shure m97xe Current set up is the vintage ortofon rmg 212 arm with the spu classic from the 1990s. The step up in an old in line version model sl15e (http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/ortofon_trafo_sl15e400.jpg). The spu is richer and more dynamic in all respects. This is especially noticeable in the mid and low ranges. I particularly notice a tighter bass response. I think this setup is just what goes with this table. I agree with the stereophile review on the Zu (http://www.stereophile.com/phonocartridges/1207zu/). It is a modified denon 103. I have an armboard with the rega 300 tonearm and the Zu 103 ready to change out if the the mood strikes me. It is my next best setup. I may move it to one of my thorens td150s. The rega/zu setup seems to sound its best on a suspension table. I am looking forward to my warranty replacement eastern electric minimax phone stage. It should show up any day. The old one had been problematic before I got the ortofon setup. It will be interesting to test the vintage step up against the low input on the minimax.
