I looked at Claude's 1/4 pies more than once, but even standing them vertically won't work as it pushes everything out from the back wall even further.  Wish I could, I know how much you and everyone else that has built them really like the results.

You are welcome to stop by and hear them if you find yourself in the Cincinnati area.

  2. Claude's quarter pie horn. You could build one that stands vertically (woofer firing down), and shorten the horn flare to 2 feet. My surround QPs stand vertically and work great. I would imaging that being that short would mean that the horn would bottom out 90-100 HZ instead of 50-60 HZ, but an F20 can handle that.

  3. I spent several hours today playing test tones and measuring with REW. After getting the LR channels sounding superb with the Xilica I decided to tackle the other channels in my HT. I am using a pair of Ashly 3.24cl units which are not nearly as user friendly or capable but having learned A LOT over the last day the results are impressive. Speakers have location-ally vanished.   Everything is super clean, music and film sound awesome!

Many, many thanks to Chris A for sharing his knowledge. I owe you a beer or 3 for sure.

  4. The Xilica sounds quite good, already a noticeable improvement over the Ashly units. The computer interface is intimidating at first but seems well laid out and I was able to easily input REW numbers for EQ. Next is to more accurately get time delay figures. I am using my old numbers from the Ashly units which were derived from measuring with a tape measure and guessing a bit. Any tips on getting that accurate would be appreciated.

Just a suggestion, but if you take a measurement with just the individual drivers (i.e., three measurements to cover the entire audible band), you can flatten the response of each driver first.

Then you can look at the relative gains needed on each channel, and set those.

REW allows you to plot the response of all three measurements at the same time, showing you where the best crossover points will likely be.  The last part--setting up the crossover filters--can be done then using whatever filters you choose, but guided by the individual driver/horn performance.

You can set up the crossovers for zero phase growth through the interference bands using a "Danley technique"--see the following for that discussion:

Feel free to PM me if you've got questions.

Thanks for all the info you put out here!

I just got it hooked up and actually working! I will be attempting to use REW shortly. I have such a huge tangle of cords with my setup (16 channels) that getting it hooked up right is taking time.

  6. Well, my XP-3060 arrived yesterday, and as luck would have it I have some time today to try to figure this thing out.

There is an overwhelming number of things you can do with this thing compared to my Ashly units. I know I am going to need help when I can figure out what questions to ask. Setting up crossover points will be task one. This unit is going to run my LR 3 way front speakers.

Awesome unit.  I had a 730 a white back that I only got rid of because I went from a two channel setup to surround sound.

Thinking of going back to two channel, actually.

    Still enjoying the Academy?

The Academy is great! Using it in my KG4 setup and it is really matches well.

  8. I am selling a Harman Kardon 630 twin powered receiver with matching wood case. The receiver is in good operating condition with all lights and functions working.

I have not had any work done on it so given its age a bit of TLC is due down the road, but it sounds good and is functional as is.

The matching wood case is in very good shape.

I would like $200 for it , and would prefer local pick up (West Chester, OH), though I might be willing to ship with buyer paying shipping costs. This is however a big, heavy unit and shipping would not be cheap.

Why there are so few women audiophiles?

I believe it is an evolutionary thing. As mankind was evolving as a hunter gatherer species, auditory feedback was really important, especially for hunting of course. Mostly men, stronger built with more muscles developed to go for the kill, would go out at night for hunting. That explains why hearing is better at night, and why we enjoy listening to music more in the evening. Women, in group, would stay in the shelter taking care of the young ones. For them, music is social thing, it is meant to be entertaining and fun. It brings people together and creates a strong bond, which is also important for survival.
For the men out hunting, hearing is crucial for locating prey and staying alive. That's why stereophonics and 3d stage sound is so valued nowedays. Also, having good ears can make a difference between life and death. Hearing high frequencies and picking up really low frequencies can make all the difference when a mammoth or sabre tooth tiger is approaching in the dark, behind the bushes.

Just my 2 cents. Watch Discovery Channel too often.

I will pass this along to my violinist wife.

She will be amused to know she can't hear high notes, esp. at night.

  10. My K-horns image quite nicely. I do have them well setup, 20 feet apart and tucked into corners.

The imaging is as good as I have heard with any other speaker. Magnapans that a friend of mine has do extremely well too, but no dynamics. Setup obviously is a big part in this.
