I prefer the sound of Heresy's than the sound of RF7's (except for bass extension), but the best you can do is buy them and then compare them with those Reference speakers, your ears should have the last word. And if you like more the RF7's you can always sell the Heresy's for what you paid for them

highlander, you certainly can search the forums to see if I do argue or not about my opinions and about what I think. On the other hand, I would say that about everytime I have seen a post by you is just to say that you have this or that gear, when confronted to explain what you think you never do. But enough about this Lets cotinue to discuss MM subs in this thread. Im still think that those numbers are inflated by the "corrections" on the readings of the SPL Meter, I would like to see the raw numbers. Still, it is an impressive sub for a MM set, and certainly one that pushes others to make better systems.

lowlander never argue, he only gets any opportunity to say he have this or that, pick a thread that talks about subwoofers (in this case a MM sub) and he will undoubtedly come to say, "that's nothing, *my* krell mrs will own it".

Its not a great dip, but still is there and substracting around -3dB at those frequencies might explain the differences (well, maybe not all) between RF-7's and Heritage. Dean I understand now! as Audio Flynn says, it is the music you listen, not the squaker. The RF-7's have a hole in the mids (oops, I hope no one takes this as an ugly comment, Im not saying they are bad speakers nor I dont like them nor the owners are crap ) the frequency graphs I have seen show that. I think is obvious why you like them with that kind of music, is like equalizing without the use of an eq. Anyway, the Heresy is almost completly flat in all the spectrum, it have a small bump at about 5Khz to about 7Khz, flat otherwise, then a strong roll off that begins at about 16Hz, but their mids are flatter, and to my ears almost "perfect" so to speak. Audio Flynn Yes! a sub in a two channel system its the only way to enjoy big orchestral works, without the strong bass at and below 30Hz its like hearing the orchestra in an AM small table radio

Sure sure sure krell big piece of metal can be marvellous, but it is not made by god (as lowerlander believes). If no one has designed something like it is because no body cares. I will say it again, there are several subs than can match and best the krell overhyped metallic lunch box. Bigger? yes, most of them, but heck a lot of people have the space to have any size of sub, why on earth should they want to pay so much money for such an ugly box? it might be small for the performance (which, by the way, I DOUBT, no body has reviewed and measured the claimed 120dB at 20hz) but again, it can be matched and surpassed, just like anything else in the world. To design a sub one doesn't need to be a rocket scientist (its not a ferrari for crying out loud), it is fairly easy to design even a good one, the physics involved are well known, there are drivers (like the Tumult) that can match (or maybe surpass) the ones on the mrs, there are lots of ways to design and make an strong cabinet, etc. As a last point, this thread is for a MM sub, who asked or wanted to know anything about the mrs?

Audio Flynn The Heresys are awesome speakers, the only thing they lack is bass extension. Since I have a big sub, I don't see the need for "improving" my speakers. Im considering a set of Fortes, Cornwalls or Chorus, but first I need to listen to them carefully. One thing makes me doubt about them... the best imaging use to come from smaller speakers, Heresy's might not be bookshelfs, but are closer than their bigger brothers. DeanG The Reference series is brighter (imo) than at least some Heritages. I can't speak for others, but my Heresy's are quite behaved, I only hear clear, pristine and pure sound out of the horns, and I do find some other speakers (like Polks at high volumes) to being harsh. Oh, My hearing is ok, thanks for asking. I can't hear very well above 15Khz but since the Heresy's roll of at about 17Khz Im ok.

I find interesting that anyone would choose the reference over the heritage series...

You need to make your homework. There quite a few DIY subs in the Net that will match and even surpass that Krell. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Good review. Im a bit concerned by the numbers, are you using the "correction numbers" for the SPL meter? Those numbers are wrong, I don't understand why so many people believe in them... I only wish you had numbers on the 4.1's which are my system, to see if I must hurry to buy my Ultra's

For me, 30Hz with power is definitely desirable, 35Hz would be enough though.

To me, all Polks I listened sound dull, muddy, their cabinet make horrible resonances at low frequencies. Definitely not my cup. Oh, and Im more and more convinced about that the people who thinks Klipsch are "bright" are in one of three camps: 1) They have never listened to acoustic intruments live (without amplification, just the sound of real instruments) 2) They are to accustomed to the muddy sound of common speakers, and begin to think that they sound "ok" 3) They only listen to bad recordings!

... Im guessing no bass limits or no bass freaks on the 4.1 forum...

"showing their age". lol. In audio, more than any other technology related area, this thing about "age" is more in the mind of the believers than in the sound they are getting. True, electronics change, manufacturing process change, cabinets can be pretty and well done and still being cheap (china, thanks) and of course, new digital gizmos appear very often. But... And "old" state of the art equipment, say Khorns with old tubes and a TT, can sound as good as the latest digital amp with sacd and the latest "aereospace technology" speakers you can find. Why? Because sound, or more exactly, how the brain can interpret sound, is way more complex than whatever technology is able to replicate.

Sean, Thanks for the review. Im interested in the Forte's because of their bass specs!, How come they don't give more bass than the Chorus's? If I read well the specs, the Chorus have a 15 inch sealed driver, and the Forte a 12 inch with a 15 inch passive. In my experience, even with the smaller driver, a speaker with a passive driver will reach lower than a sealed box. The specs at Klipsch site apparently confirm this feeling. And now you come to write this review that has confused me... should I get the Chorus instead??? Currently Im very happy with my Heresy's, but want a Heritage speaker with bigger mouth for the horns. In the bass department Im covered with my Tempest sub, but it doesn't hurt to have lower bass than what my Heresy's are able to put... just in case.
