  1. Well...I know this is not what you are asking...but here is what I would do: 1. Use the ss-1 for surrounds 2. Build a 2 channel rig around the 3.5s Also, that way, in case you decided down the road that you made the wrong choice (or really got into DVA/SACD) you would still have your old beloved 3.5s around.
  2. Some that I like to use to show off are: SPR (DTS) The Patriot (the ambush in the woods...tremendous surround use) Pearl Harbor (great surround use again) Baraka The Incredibles and for music: Diana Krall Live in Paris
  3. Yep, this show could be painful at times but it could be really funny too. Amy Sedaris (who played Jerry Blank) is a native of my hometown (Raleigh NC) and I used to see her around all the time. A useless factoid: her real-life brother is David Sedaris, the author and frequent NPR contributor (some may have heard his bit about being an Elf at Macy's one Christmas).

    I HEART Huckabees

I watch several movies a week. This was one of the very few that I can remember shutting off. I found it un-watchable...and I have taken a few philosophy courses. Although, "You Rock...Rock" killed me. All downhill from there.

    City of God

Yes, I watched this a few weeks ago and think of it often. It was really well done. And how about that opening scene (the chicken)...that kind of freaked me out.
  6. Yep, I've watched it twice now (the rated and unrated versions once each) and it is just hysterical. And the songs are deeply imbedded in my skull...can't keep them out of my head. Particularly America F Yeah (does anyone else think it sounds like cheesy "Top Gun" Patriotic pop...yet with James Hetfield from Metallica doing the vocals?) and the song from "Lease - The Muscial." Freakin' hilarious I tell you.
  7. Good idea...HK AVRs really do run hot...I've had an AVR120 and an AVR525...the 525 ran extremely hot, even though I only ran it 5.1 channel (and all 8 ohm Polk speakers, nothing fancy or hard to run). The internal cooling fan used to run all of the time...and I had it in an armoire with 6" room behind, 6" to the sides and 8" above...always with the doors open. I never had it shut down, though. Once my wife left it powered on and shut the armoire doors. I opened them up the next day and the heat just rolled out...not quite like an oven but very hot nonetheless.
  8. Perhaps it was unhooked long enough for the default inputs to reset themselves? In other words if you use coax for dvd and optical for CD (or whatever) and defaults are different you may have to go into the setup menu to reset them. Just a thought.
  9. I used to have the same unit and it worked flawlessly for 4 years (I stuck it on ebay after downsizing my system...plus it was too deep to fit into my new cabinet). The player never had a problem reading any disc, no matter how scratched...which I thought was weird, as Sony's players (particularly DVD players) have a reputation for being kind of fussy. And it sounded great...particularly the optical out (and I normally avoid those things). I think it sounded every bit as good as my current Denon 380 and Yamaha 506 changers.
  10. I'll do that, thanks for the tip(s)!
  11. Ah, ported, of course. That pretty much answers that. Off to the garage then. Yes, I am quickly becoming a huge fan of the 630 twin powered receiver. While waiting for my 3.2s to show up I have been using it drive my old Advents with tremendous results...it is a really fine sounding receiver...just gobs of headroom. It looked really ugly when I found it...just covered with dust and filth. But it powered up and most of the dial lights worked, so I of course had to buy it. I was leary as the seller said she had it in the attic for a couple of years (North Carolina summers make for super hot attics that will ruin the caps). But upon getting it home I opened it up and found that it was actually really clean on the inside and nothing looked worse for wear. Cleaned the pots and controls and fired it up. And wow. Probably the best sounding vintage receiver I have had, and I have had a few nice ones (Pioneer sx1250 and sx3900, Sansui G5500, Yamaha cr820). It is indeed a keeper!
  12. Hey all, Well, I recently found a vintage HK 630 twin powered receiver at a yard sale for 10 bucks...it works great. I remember from browsing this forum some last year that a lot of you guys love the old HKs for driving your Klipsch's so I decided I better find some and see how they match up. Let it be said that I am pretty much a Polk guy when it comes to speakers...the only Klipsch speaks I have owned previously was a Quintet satellite system which I enjoyed for awhile but eventually sold to try out something else (Wharfedale satellites). So anyhow, I found a pair of KSB 1.1 speaks locally and picked them up. They aren't bad, vocals and imaging are actually quite nice. My question is this: Are these things waterproof? They really look like outdoor speakers, but the info I found on them on the Klipsch site did not specify if they were for outdoor use or not. I'm guessing not, but they do sound better IMO than my 3 year old Advent outdoor speakers, and since I have a pair of KG3.2s on the way I'm not sure what other use I will have these down the road. Thanks everyone! Woody
  13. Well Bill, unfortunately I think you are right. I've seen all of them on ebay. I guess I will take them over there and see if I can sell them there. If anyone wants to make a reasonable offer I will consider it.
  14. Hi guys, I have decided I like the klipsch sound but I need to get some old heresys or something along those lines. Thus, I have decided to sell off my quintets. I have 3 pair in white that I purchased online (new, from ubid.com) about four months ago. I have original boxes and manuals for all of them. I used 5 in a 5.1 setup, the other hasn't left the box. 5 of them are mint, one has a little dark smudge on the top left corner of the grill fabric, barely noticeable. Make me an offer if interested...I'll sell them in pairs or all 3 pairs. Woody
  15. Thanks Father Bill. I'll save my cash and watch for some KGs!
