  1. I use Solen caps in pretty much all of my "better" speakers and have now for about 25 years. If they're larger uf caps, I'll sometimes use Dayton 5% poly caps, as mentioned, to save a little. I've not heard enough difference in the Sonicaps I've used to substantiate them over Solens for the extra price. Me personally, anyway.

  2. I've had it now for 10 years and it does indeed suck. If I get a headache of any kind, it gets worse. Some days are better than others, too. Mine is from all the concerts from late 70's into the 00's, being in car audio for 20 years, and playing in bands. I even used ear plugs and headsets most all the time but it still crept in. Nothing like hearing that damn tone all of the time and trying to listen to music.

  3. Ok...gotcha. The inside dimensions of the ports remained the same as they were before as the new tubes just slipped over the existing plastic ports. Believe me, I do have knowledge in cabinet construction and tuning with round, slotted, rectangular, etc ports plus as aperiodic membranes, etc. 30 years of car and home audio did that for me. Plus, I own a Rockford OSC2 tone generator and have access to an Audio Control SA3050a analyzer if I really want to get jiggy. Lol

  4. I wouldn't see where the 1/4" walls on port tubes would have an adverse affect on cabinet volume versus adding multiple wall braces internally. There's next to nothing in the calculated volume in the space that 2 small ports would take up. That would also be like saying that the added "dynamat" to the horns takes up a lot of space. Ports optimally still need to be solid like cabinet walls for no flexing.

  5. Bottle and cork provide the "ambience" and allure to wine.

I was happy when synthetic corks showed up because you still got to remove a cork.  But twist tops quickly won over those. Not cool at all for consumers.  Processors like systems that preserve the quality..........the box could catch on and does make sense.  I don't  care for "draught" wine personally.

This reminds me of why there is such an allure to vinyl versus digital to some. The "act" of taking the record out, playing it, having to flip it over, put it away when done, etc. It's part of the novelty.

  6. This weekend my brother in law recommended that I start drinking a few glasses of red wine very night.  I agree, I'm sure that it is good for you, if not just that it is good to be relaxed.

So I asked him, "Do you recommend something that comes in a box or in a can?"  Sophisticated, I is!!

Now that there's funny...I don't care who ye are.

  7. Sipping on some Red Moscato right now as I'm trying to get my wife into drinking some on occasion. Not my usual Merlot of Pinot Noir but you have to start somewhere with them.

  8. This may already be carnal knowledge but I found that the best fitting tubes for adding length to the Epic CF-3's and 4's is going to your friendly carpet store. They have multiples of sizes of cardboard tubes from rolls that are sometimes 1/4" thickness and fit the thin stock plastic ports tight and snug. Did I mention they were free of charge? Once you get the desired length, just get a dollar can of black spray paint and you're done. So, now my 3's are re-braced, have new caps, resistors and 5.5" port tubes and, if I want to experiment with tuning, I can get more free of charge. I also have a port tuning generator from my car audio days that we used for tuning vented enclosures that will come in handy.

  9. After a couple hours work, my CF-3 crossovers are updated with Solen caps on the high frequency side and Dayton 5% poly caps on the low side.  Also, Mills 12 watt 1% resistors replaced the original ones and the 1-ohm resistor across the HF circuit removed  which, apparently, makes them closer to the version 1 crossovers.  The speakers have been playing for awhile at low volume as not everyone likes it as loud as I do it seems.  But my wife spent a week in the hospital and had surgery this past Monday so she's not quite ready for jam time.  Next step will be to extend the ports and put some "Fat Mat" on the horns and woofer frame which will probably be as far as I care to go.  As soon as my KLF-30's make it here from Austin, TX next month, the process will start over again but I'll most likely change out the Poly diaphragms out for the titanium versions.
