Well just a quick update the Pioneer 6 disc is still working, this thing was one of the first audio pieces I purchased when I was 15. I remember as a teenager my friends and I would try to figure out what was in the cartridges. I just might have to pick a couple up off of the bay and stock them with some of my favs.

Nice, I have a HK power amp that needs some transistors. Out of all my broken gear that I want to try and fix it is one of the ones that won't make it out of my presences. Nice score hope you enjoy.

I think the Technics I was using was causing a hum in one of the channels, I will let you know if that was the issue. But the reason I started this thread was because my Technics I think was causing issues and my old pioneer six disc wouldn't work. Plus I also wanted some great recommendations on cd players/dvd players and now I know. But I was researching what could be wrong with my pioneer and found two things if the motor is working which is the tracking device of some sort or just a dirty lens. Well I thought I have tried to clean the lens before and nothing happened. So I pulled it a part tonight found nothing really looking broken, so I tried with a soft cloth and wiped the lens off again. What do you know its working, I will give it another good cleaning with a disc cleaner. Now I know its not audiophile worthy and doesn't play sacd but If memory serves me it would play cdr which is fine if it doesn't as I don't have many of these any ways. But for now let the music play.

I think the dacs are nice but I don't have a computer in that room. From what I have read sounds like either a older style single disc player or a newer dvd/bd player. I guess I could buy one of those oppo bd players so when my ht is done I have a good bd player for it. But I don't want to spend that kind of money right know. Some one was talking about older sony disc players that their dad had, just to let you know I had one of those that sounded great but I gave it to my sister, and of coarse can't ask for it back. I will keep my eye out for a good dvd/bd player or older single disc player. Thanks guys and gals.

Heritage Home Theatre System Speakers Configuration
The Dude replied to neo33's topic in Home Theater
Someone esle layed a Khorn on its side and built a false corner for their home theater. I built something like the KPT-8001 based off of Gothovers drift. I haven't finished my room yet so I can't tell you how they sound with a ht configuration. But I am also using the Khorns for fronts with a Lascala for a center. But mine are modified wth altec horns and selenium horns and drivers. -
Article: Subwoofer that shook the world
The Dude replied to michael hurd's topic in Technical/Restorations
I bet that sounds insane. I wanted to try a IB sub, but do not have a place or room to. I actually was thinking of digging out my basement to build a IB, I even figured how much it was going to cost for concrete to build forums even rent a electric excavator to dig up the floor and go down about 4 feet. Then my wife got wind of it and that idea got shut down. -
For the past several months I think there has been a mixture of things keeping me away of just sitting here listening to music. I have been building and constructing so many things and never finishing anything, that the other day I finally got my 2 channel system up and running again(minus a turntable but with get there again). I was laying on the floor looking around the room thinking of all the things I could be doing, hanging that poster, building some sound panels, cleaning the fish tank(which I did do to keep them fishys happy). When I just stopped and said why can't I just lay and listen to music, so I did then of coarse the phone rang and a buddy needed help on his truck(no biggie we'll get this taken care of asap). So as for what I have been building, well that starts with the want of a tube preamp/ss power setup which I think now I am some what happy with. But I ordered a kit from tubes4hifi and built which lead me to trying a different power amp a McIntosh MC2505, But of course I can't focus on one project so down to the basement. Family quality time is important to so I start building a designing a ht based around Klipschorn bass bins, and a Lascala bass bin for the l/c/r. Then I decide to build some of Gothovers drifts speakers for a surround speaker so I can move my Heresies up stairs with the tube pre/ss power amp combo setup. No I don't have the ht done yet but I have been building reinforced cornered walls and which I am still in the framing stage for the ht but I can't help but get the modded Khorns set to see how they sound with the plywood up on the walls. Then my buddy throws me a chunk of carpet and padding I can put down which made a huge difference in the sound. I get to thinking I have a Emotiva UPA-5 power amp setting around why not hook it up and see how it sounds, man the dynamics have improved. Now for the decisions, do I go down stairs and enjoy the Khorns, or up stairs and enjoy the fine components. After tossing this idea around for about 15mins I convince my self down stairs why you might ask. Well let me tell you why, 1 there is a fridge with beer, 2 there is a comfy chair and 3 my laptop. Which brings me to my next point If I was to bring my laptop up stairs that would me I would want to hook it up to the 2 channel system up stairs. Not a big problem just takes the external sound card some interconnects and bam. My music collection on my laptop being played through my 2 channel rig. But wait that takes away from just playing music. So after a couple of beers here I am doing some reading listening to music typing away. Dam its so much work to get here but it is relaxing.

Kenwood 220 watts vs Mcintosh 50, or 105watts
The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Just a update, I recently found some bad transistors, a couple of resistors 2 of the wirewound and 1 carbon resistor on one of the boards. So far it sounds pretty good. I need to now go through and replace some of the electrolitics, and get more size appropriate resistors(I have the right ohms just physical size). Once I do that I might be tempeted to go through and try what djk was talking about but I want to make sure everything is working 100%. Now for my short little review, Going from the Kenwood 220watts to the McIntosh 50 watts. I still don't don't find my self turning the gain more then a quater turn on the Mc, which is still plently loud enough which answers my question about having enough or at the time to much wattage. I am happy about that. I still need to give some more listening to the detail to see what else I might notice. Thanks for all your help and advice, I am glad I pulled the trigger on this switch. Other then being out a few extra bucks I don't how I could have gone wrong with this upgrade. Duder -
Nice to know I share the same bday with tommy, and dylan amd many others.

The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Recieved thursday, other then some real slight bubbling on the bottom left corner the face is in great shape. There is some rustting on the chrome but I read a thread somewhere that talks about cleaning it up. Now for the bad news yes I knew the right channel didnt work but when I plugged her in and turned her on some smoke came out from under the heatsink cover and I get nothing now from the left side. I opened it up but cant see amything so time to get out the volt meter amd do some checking. -

Kenwood 220 watts vs Mcintosh 50, or 105watts
The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
is it comin for the right channel on a mc2505 to go out if so what was the problem, what are the chances it can be a autoformer. I have found two of these units with the right channel not working. -
My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools[H]

No the separate power suppy, would only be the power supply board, and transformer. If I go this route would I still need the aluminum chassis for the transformer, or could I then use a steal one for the power supply and just leave the line stage and phono stage in the aluminum chassis. Hopefully that make sense cause I know I have to think about it for a sec.

Heres a link of what I have so far everything sounds great. http://community.klipsch.com/forums/t/162837.aspx I want to add the phono stage but as you can tell I don't have the room for it. Someone gave me the idea of building a seperate chassis for the power supply, which could easliy be done. If I was to go that route what guage wire would you use. Thanks Nick

Marvel, Cask, Maybe this would help, project is a tube preamp. So should I stay away from steel, from the sounds of things that is what you are saying. Is there a product that can line a steel chassis that would help with magnetic fields. Somes times the technical stuff gets tuff to understand. Thanks guys.

Is there any advantages of using one over the other, other then weight when it comes to choosing the right metal such as either aluminum, or poweder coated steel. Thanks Duder.

Kenwood 220 watts vs Mcintosh 50, or 105watts
The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Ok maybe someone can clear something up for me. I was down talking to a local tech, who also sells audio gear out of his shop, to see if he had any older mc2105, or something of the sort. Long story short, he claimed a issue with some of the older MCs as they use a auto former. Now I know absolutely nothing about this sort of stuff, thats why I am asking but what would the issue be with them using a auto former. If there is a issue with them using them, then is there certain models to look out for. -
Kenwood 220 watts vs Mcintosh 50, or 105watts
The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Do I understand this right, but 2120 is 120 watts without glass and 2125 is 120 watts with glass same with the 2150 and 2155 150 watts with or with out. -
Good answerers lads, I think I have the answer I was looking for and yes it will just come down to me trying the different amp out. Just when you think your there you have a whole another journey awaiting for you. thanks Duder

The Dude replied to The Dude's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
You want to loan one of those out so I can try it[]. How about a MC2150 any experiance with those. Thanks for all the input I don't think I will be holding back when I come across the right deal. -
About that one good watt, what is considered a good watt. The reason I ask is referring to a post I posted earlier(in two channel), my question is how does something along the lines of Kenwoods wattage compare to lets just say McIntosh's wattage. Would 1 to 50 or maybe 100 of McIntosh watts beat down Kenwoods 1 to 200 watts. If this makes any sense. Thanks Duder
