  1. OK.  Here is a serial number on a K-Horn:
    17U432

I am guessing these were manufactured in 1980.  What does the 17 stand for and what does the 432 stand for?  The odd thing is the top section is NOT a Klipsch product, but has Klipsch Horns and Crossover.  The paper sticker is gone, except for what is under a piece of wood screwed to the back.  Under the serial number is "USA" and under USA is "RC".  This is stamped next to the access door.  Was it normal to sell just bottom cabinets for K-horns?  I posted a picture.

Hi "jw" :)   -  I did do a pair in "piano black" (the Black Betty's).  Be aware, the gloss black will show EVERY imperfection.  Take your time is probably the very best advice I could give.  If you have veneer popping, try to get a little something under it and glue it back down (i.e. save it).  I use 3M wood filler to fill in the bad spots.  Lots of sanding and get them as smooth as possible.

Do you do your own cane covers or to you get them somewhere?  I am just about to start a pair of LaScala's.  They bottoms were busted out to rob the driver.  (I have a set of K-horns that were damaged in a flood that I am robbing the components)  I have to install a new bottom board then sand the old black paint off.  Then wood filler and more sanding.  I planed on priming them then spraying them with two coats of black lacquer, then buffing with a paste wax.  I want to use grill covers, but don't have a source.

Alex, best of luck with your decision. If the cabs are in good shape I'd sand and refinish them just like th ones Matthews did. They do look and sound great in a small room. Here are the ones Matthews refinished in a room a little smaller than yours.

Oh, wow.  i was hoping you wouldn't buy those awful things and that your insurance company would do the right thing.

While you are repairing them, add some bass horn braces.  Install them off center, so you don't just double the side wall resonance frequency.

The insurance company did pay the policy limit of $5,000 on contents.  So they did the right thing.  I can't say anything bad about Travelers.  They were quick to respond after I provided a replacement quote.  I am looking forward to the project.  Hey, I saved a set of LaScala's from the dump and I am learning a lot about one of my favorite speakers.  Plus I get to play around.  I'm reading on LaScalas.  I ran across a post that was interesting.  It valued "Crate" (handles, corner guards, etc) LaScalas higher than a home pair.  I am wondering why?  Anyway, I plain to have fun with these.  At $165 for both cabinets, I can't go too wrong.  Just REALLY wish the guy had discovered the upper access before he tore the bottoms out.

  5. I'm in Shreveport, LA.  I purchased a set out of Springfield, MO.  They will need a lot of work but the price was right.  I'll post pictures when I'm done.  The current owner knocked to bottoms off to remove the driver.  After I get them in my workshop, I will determine if the bottoms can be reattached or if new bottoms need to be fabricated.  They also have carrying handles and corner protectors.  I plan on removing both of these and patching them.  After that, I plan to sand, prime and paint them in black lacquer.  codewritenfool suggested I remove the upper access panel and close off the back of the HiFi section and add ports up there.  May try it.  It shouldn't be too hard.

  6. Travelers paid the policy limit of $5,000 on content once they received the quote on a new pair.  And I got to keep the speakers.  I'm chasing down a pair of LaScala cabinets now for $165. (plus $300 transportation)  Hopefully I can get them and put the components in them.  I won't feel so bad about the Bob Crites rebuilt crossovers and tweeters going to waste.

Sorry been out of town, this is a MWM, a Klipsch design, there are single and doubles. The doubles are just like 2 of the singles stacked up, very close anyway. A somewhat simple design which works very well and a really good sound. You can see why I asked if they were for a "hanger".

They have to top half sound of a LaScala (same parts) but more and bigger bass, the ones here outside and on the tractor are used for yard speakers just use a AA crossover and one bin for each side. The others are used differently for in the living room, active crossover and true biamped with a 402 horn on top.

I think Coytee had double bins he offered to give away, he lives in Tennessee.

Totally weird you posted about the MWM.  I started searching for a pair of LaScala and ran across a guy selling two pair and a set of MWM's.  I would have had no idea what they were.  I'm tempted to buy them in case I ever open a concert venue.  lol.   Thanks again.  Always looking to learn something new.

  8. I really wished I loved closer to some of you on this thread.  I would like to hang out for a few weekends and learn about tub amp construction.  I ran across this thread when I searched to forum for Magnavox Amp 175-67.  I wanted to learn more about removing one from a console and rebuilding.  I must admin, I am a bit overwhelmed and in awe of ya'll.

I have no affiliation with this listing though I did talk to the owner about these - The bottom boards were removed by someone to get to the woofer.  They didn't realize (I guess) that these are older models and the woofer door is in the HF section.  $165 isn't bad, you could clean up that bottom doghouse surface and just put a new board on it.  I'd put the proper opening on it while I was at it and a new bottom woofer door.

Thanks.  He was supposed to send me some pic's via text.  Never got them, but they are just as he described.  It's about a 16 hour drive for me (round trip).

Oh OK I thought they were intended to be in the hanger, better if you can get them where you can listen more even better.

What I was going to suggest was if in a big open space like a hanger, size wouldn't be a problem and  much bigger sound/bass could have helped. The top half of a Khorn or LaScala with AA crossovers match well with the bass bin of a mwm. I use this for outside. Split LaScala diy top with a factory mwm bass bin, same top sound as a LaScala but with much more bass than a LaScala. It can fill a big space, if it can fill acres here it could do a hanger.

Plus there is someone here giving away the bass bins free, I think he still has them( Coytee ). This would have been a "hanger" setup that would have sounded good, almost free, with your drivers and crossovers.

Now the bins were double bins, I use a single on each side. If you did that and wanted to use a double on each side you would have needed to get 2 more woofers and have someone here to explain how to wire that to still use the AA crossover, I think it still could be done.

I had 2 single mwm bass bins extra, it's how I ended up with this combination, got a pair of crites tweets and 2 K400 horns from Klipsch and some rebuilt AA crossovers, the crossover point worked, sounds like a LaScala with a good bit more and bigger bass.

Sorry to hear about your Khorns, insurance companies have no idea what they are worth, or don't want to know. Good luck

Dtel - What is a mwm?

  11. dtel -

I ran out of room, so I put them in the hanger.  I did have some false walls built for them though.  They were a little echo-ish.  I ran them on a Marantz 2330B.  The LaScala would fit in my home office or my office, same for the Cornwall.  I just don't see another pair of K-horns in my future for a while.  I need to take the K-22 out of the bottom cabinet before it starts to rust from the humidity.  The top has enough air circulating that I'm not worried.

I'll send you a Heritage Price spreadsheet with historical sale prices on Khorns.  Khorns with Type AA XO's go for $2000 all day long.  Tell Travelers you can have an expert (me) certify the current value of your Khorns.  I'll send you a notarized valuation.

The worst they can do is say no.

Check your PM in a couple of minutes.

The issue is that the policy is depreciated value, not replacement.  Every other policy I have is replacement value.  Unfortunately, my partner did this policy.  I may give it a shot though.

  13. Last month my hanger flooded, and with it I lost my K-horns.  The insurance company (travelers) is giving me $400 for the K-horns.  Yep, that's it.  The cabinets are JUNK, but the components are  good.  In fact, last year Bob Crites redid the crossovers and I replaced the K-77 with his horns.  Anyway, I have some great components now that need a new cabinet.  Sad thing is Hope is 60 miles to my north.  Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has ever done a K-horn to LaScala conversion?  If I am going to have to build new cabinets, the LaScala or Belle cabinets would fit my lifestyle better.  What are the differences in the components?  I know the crossovers are different, but how much different?  Am I crazy for thinking this?  I don't have room for the K-horns in my current house, which is why they were in the hanger.  Heck what about going to a Cornwall cabinet????

  14. Wow...Just WOW!  They look great.  I am talking with a guy about a pair of late 70's Lascala's in raw birch.  Hopefully, they will be mine soon.  In the last pictures it looks like you outlined the grills in black wood frame.  Is that right or just an effect of the photo?  What was the total project cost?  I cannot believe how great they look.  I am green with envy.

  15. Wow. I thought is was just me. Thanks for the post! I had not visited the site for a few months and was shocked at the new site. Passwords work SOMETIMES then nothing. The new site is lousy and the hit meter shows. Steady decline.......Sorry to see it go. It was a great place to go to find things.

  16. OK. I think I am settling for a Thorens TD 150. It's all stock. It's Old School and quality. The price is right and it appears to be a good basic platform. Many possible upgrades available if I want to tweak it later. New arm, new feet.......wait, lets just see what we get. Maybe I will be plesantly suprised with whats in the box. Comments?? Recomendations??

  17. Looking for some direction here. I am wanting to buy a turntable. Budget $200 to $400. Vintage or New? Direct Drive or Belt? Like the Marantz 6350's, but also like the Technics SL1200 (sold mine 8 or so years ago). Thought about Thorens then my thoughts go to some vintage linear TT. Planar P3..smooth, clean, plain. Any thoughts???

  18. I am looking for advice on a Gym / auditorium speaker setup. I have several extra pair of Klipsch speakers and want to donate one set to my girl’s school for a loud system. This is for a school gym where they have musical programs. I imagine attaching eye bolts to the speakers and hanging them from the rafters. This is a full size basket ball size gym with 25 to 30' ceiling. Any advice? Will heresy's be enough? Will LaScalla's be too much? Will Forte's fall apart if hung from eye bolts? Surely there are enough of you out there that have hung these in similar settings. Thanks!!![8-)]
