  1. What about using OSB plywood and then using 1/4" birch skinned over it?

I could be wrong, but I would think there would be way to much flex, and voids.

I have seen it used for some subs and according to this link there are no voids... http://www.norbord.com/na/blog/plywood-or-osb-panels-which-is-better-2 It is way cheaper.

Oriented strand board (OSB) would be the absolute worst choice for speaker cabinet building.

Why? I have seen it used for subs and according to the link I posted it has no voids.

    It has no density.

I used it before for wall sheathing & I-beam floor joist construction when i was building houses & see it all the time when shopping for plywood & shop stuff.

Its super cheap and it has a purpose but not for cabinet building.

  2. Update or replace your crossover depending what XO you're currently running. (some stock ones sound good some don't)

Add a horn sub to your system.

The K-402 is a great upgrade if you don't mind a big honker on top of your cabinets.

Honker indeed, but they are SO worth it. Also, the absolutely do NOT honk. Just the most spooky realistic female vocals you have ever heard.

No honk from these horns, they do sound spectacular.

I was referring more to the horn size in general.

  3. In my experience building a few cabinets for subs and speakers, Baltic Birch is the way to go. Easy to work with and a lot less messy than MDF. MDF is horrible in terms of dust and mess....really bad for your lungs.

Baltic Birch is just excellent in terms of lack of voids and strength. I have not tired Apple Ply, but hear it is also excellent.

I rarely use MDF these days....mostly to spare my lungs from the mess. MDF is more dense, heavier and more homogeneous than the BB I have found. But, I prefer working with BB than MDF.

BB holds screws way better than MDF.

Personally, I prefer BB or some good grade plywood.

I agree with you here, the only time i use pressed & glued sawdust sheet is when i have to.

With so many good plywood products available why use a inferior product.

  4. Are there different grades of Baltic Birch? I find the 5' x 5' sheets to be the highest quality, but it is only 1/2". I use it to make drawers.

I agree with the Home Depot and Lowes, you need to find a real lumber yard. I do remember the Home Depot having sheets of Maple ply on sale for $40 many years ago, but that is all that I have ever bought there for a project.

Yes, the chinese Baltic Birch with the thin veneer layer available at Home Depot, Lowes & Menards is garbage for speaker cabinet construction.

My Menards used to stock Auraco Plywood now it is no longer in stock but luckily i found a kinda local lumberyard where they stock some decent void free stuff & BB.

  5. Thanks, i will look into all these options.

Never knew there were any other products available besides Audyssey.

It just didn't make sense to go looking for a multichannel preamp or receiver when i would only be using 2 of them.

I'm actually pretty happy with my current setup but like anybody else thinks there's always room for improvements

Those other product$$$$ are pricey options. Just get a Mini DSP 2x4 for $105, a $20 Radio Shack 12V. power supply, the Mini USP UMIK test microphone, and free REW software for your laptop. About $210 total. http://www.minidsp.com/

That looks like a great tool & won't empty the pocketbook.

I just had a look at the websight and i think it will suit my needs perfectly.

Keep me up to date with your progress Claude.

  7. If you're looking for a easy to build sub check out the Simplexx 15 home theater sub from Bill Fitzmaurice, i have the plans here and its pretty simple in design and ruler flat to 30Hz

I think I'd want something that dug a little deeper for HT. What's the + - at 20Hz?

Who said anything about home theater ?

Anyways here is the chart, 2nd from the bottom.

  8. I noticed that that Parts Express has a whole line house brand DIY subs now.

I will be very interested in what you think of the quality of the kit once you get into the build. I have been thinking about building a non horn sub to go with my Chorus. PE is only 25 min. north of me.

If you're looking for a easy to build sub check out the Simplexx 15 home theater sub from Bill Fitzmaurice, i have the plans here and its pretty simple in design and ruler flat to 30Hz, it uses the Dayton 15" RSS390HO-4 driver and would pair nicely with the Yung 500 watt plate amp on sale for $150 but sale ends soon.
