  1. I would have to say that the White Album is possibly my favorite album to listen to on my Cornwalls. Then again, there is something about all of The Beatles albums on my Cornwalls. What a great album it was and still is! []
  2. "Setled on a Martin HD-35. It was perfect for me" Too bad another person has succumbed to Martin. J/K!!! Just make sure you get rid of the heavy strings that comes on them. []
  3. Exactly tommyboy! Rank = better audio gear. Lol
  4. "It's no secret that no one is in the military for the pay; because it's in no form great" I am in the USAF myself. The pay may not be outstanding. But, when you factor the health benefits + education benefits. It ain't half bad. Though, I wouldn't mind more $$$ [*-)] My budget strictly limits my audio purchases. Daniel
  5. "Yairi being great sound for the price." I have to disagree. Yairi is a GREAT sound with or without considering price. [] The BEST classical guitar I have ever played was a Yairi Alvarez. I would recommend Yairi above pretty much any other brand. I may be biased though, its what I learned on. Every other guitar since, has always left something to be desired. As far as playability, you can't go wrong with Taylor. However, some of the Taylors I have played do have a less than full sound. IMHO, Martin is overrated. They make some outstanding guitars and they make some overpriced less than desirable models. Most of the Martins that I have played in music stores have heavy gauge strings as well. That hurts the playability. I also noticed that Ovations was mentioned. Some of their better models are very playable, especially with light strings. BUT, they really need to be plugged into an amp. Without out an amp, they lack a full sound. They lack a good bottom end to the music. But with an amp... they can sound sweet and very full. When it comes down to it. It really depends on how the guitar feels to you. That may be difficult if you are an inexperienced guitarist. But, it is something that you may realize 2 or 3 years down the road after purchasing a guitar now. Everyone has a preference when it comes to guitars. You just need to figure yours out. Good luck on your search! Daniel
  6. I found an old forum posting on google that talks about a Gollehon 400 SRL. I am wondering if this is possibly a type and this is the same speakers. I'll have to call the owner and find out. Here is the posting: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/archive/index.php/t-410257.html. It mentions that it is indeed a three way speaker. Interesting. Daniel
  7. In my never ending search for a pair of cheap La Scalas. I stumbled accross a pair of Gollehon 400 SEL Speakers. http://denver.craigslist.org/msg/940908943.html Anyone ever heard of these? They look alot like La Scalas. I'm mostly wondering if the bass bin is similar to the La Scala bass bin. But, I can find no information on the speakerr. Apparently the company went out of business about 15-20 years ago. Can anyone confirm this? Daniel
  8. The cornwall vault would be best. But, make sure you pack around them thoroughly and strap them in good. I would suggest alot of foam around the speakers then cover than in carboard. Then strap them in on top of that. Maybe some towels in between the foam and the speakers as well. You'll love those Cornwalls. It'll make your workout 50% more effective [8-|]
  9. 100 wpc is more than enough. "I'm sure most people have experienced what it is like in a club when the music is so loud you have to yell to have a conversation and even then you don't understand half the time what is being said..." At about 75 watts, I can YELL as loud as I possibly can and my wife cannot hear a single word I say. The same goes if she screams at me. My room is smaller than yours, but I must warn you that in my room this 75 watts is so loud it is terribly uncomfortable. Just my little tidbit for ya. Daniel
  10. Indeed. The networks are already updated. The only internal upgrade left in the future will be one of Bob Crites CT125 tweeters.
  11. I know what you are talking about. The old veneer was that way. I've already considered that. I think i will just veneer the top of the back piece seperately from the top piece.
  12. Thanks for the document. There is alot of great information in it. However, I was hoping for something more specific to Klipsch.
  13. I just stripped the veneer off the second speaker. Now I have some more sanding and prep work then its time to veneer. I have a quick question. Does anyone know what the exotic veneers were used around 1972? I'm thinking that I would like to use one of them for the sake of some legitimacy. Thanks in advance. Daniel
  14. Last weekend, i finished up removing the veneer on one speaker. Here is a pic of the speaker. Additionally, I think I proved that these speakers are in fact decorators and originally came with no grill. The front is stained identically to the back of the speaker. I believe that they were indeed purchased in raw. They were then stained by the first owner. The second owner then veneers the sides and top and put a grill on them. I can't wait to start on speaker number 2 this weekend. Daniel
  15. Well, I suppose I will get to negotiating on the cr-1020 then. It is actually my fathers old amp that he originally bought with his '75 Cornwalls. Unfortunately, the static on the nob actually popped his tweeters at one point in time. I will hopefully be able to get it from him towards the end of September. It is in physically great condition. I'll be sure to upload some pics if it works out in my favor.
  16. I have another quick question. I may be able to get a CR-1020 that needs the Volume knob cleaned up (it has alot of static in it). This CR-1020 would be free or close to it. How much of a difference is there between the 2020 and the 1020? Would it be worth spending the $250 in this case?
  17. I will be using the receiver with a pair of '72 Vertical Cornwalls. I may splurge and get the receiver then. I have heard the CR-1020 on a set of '75 Cornwalls. That was an awesome match. My understanding is that the CR-2020 is even better than the 1020. My main concern was that the price of them. Thanks for the input guys. I always value the opinions I read on here. Daniel
  18. I have found a Yamaha CR-2020 Receiver for $250. Its about a 4 hour drive to check it out. I was wondering what you guys thought about the receiver and the price. The seller claims that it has been completely gone through and claims everything works as though it was new. Thanks in advance.
  19. I got the caps swapped out on the other speaker. I must say after a nice long session of listening, there is defintitely a noticeable difference. Interestingly, the largest difference is that before the new caps it sounded as though one speaker was marginally louder than the other. After the swap, the two are levelled out nicely. I guess the one speakers caps had become more resistive than the other. Additionally, the highs have a better presence over all. They are more crisp and pronounced. Now, its back to working on the cabinets.
  20. I got a set of replacement caps from Bob Crites today. It was pretty easy to get them installed. Right now, I am comparing one speaker to the other. One with the replacement and one without. So far, I am not noticing a huge difference. I have noticed that the extreme highs on the new caps do sound a little more pronounced and crisp. I'll give some more input as I listen to them more and get the 2nd speaker freshened up with the caps.
  21. I must say, those Heresies are beautiful!! I would go with a veneer. I'm just nervous after seeing the condition of the veneer on these cornwalls. They would look absolutely beautiful with a veneer job like that! What do you think about my ideas for finishing? Do you think a stain + oil would do them justice?
  22. I'm referring to the damage the glue causes. It is reversible. It just requires a considerable amount of labor. If u ever want to remove the veneer, you will have to deal with it. In this case, the veneer cracked severely over the whole speaker box. The veneer was chipped in a places along the corners. Removing the veneer itself was easy. However, as I just stated--the glue is not so easy to remove. Just my two cents.
  23. Here is one more pic for now. This shows that side after I completed the stripping/sanding. It took about 4 to 5 hours of work total on just this side. Even after that much time, I'm not calling it finished. I will need to go back over it with a finer sand paper before I put a finish on it. As much work as it is, seeing that one side after I stripped/sanded it gave me all the motivation I needed to finish the job. I know these will look beautiful when I am done. I think I'm going to just stain them and then oil them up with Tung or Linseed oil. Any input would be appreciated. The only thing I refuse to do is veneer them--because I now see the damage that veneer can do to a speaker box. But mostly, how much work it is to repair that damage. P.S. Did i mention that I paid $450 for these?
  24. This shows the one side I started. This was after the veneer was removed with an iron and putty knife. I had also sanded about half of the side.
  25. Does anyone have a picture of a decorator model? I would like to be certain that they are. I just need to see exactly how the boards line up on the front to be sure. I didn't realize the vertical decorators were so rare. I purchased the xover rebuild kit from Bob Crites--payment should clear today. Hopefully, I will be soldering those caps in Saturday if I'm lucky. I've got a couple of pics to upload. This picture shows the condition of the veneer that I am stripping. There are also several chips of he veneer near the base. Though, I have no pics of chips.
