  1. If you have KG5.5s mains like me, then you should really consider making a custom center. If you don't want to build one from scratch (like I did) then consider modifying a KG4.x or 5.x -- or even a KG3.x if you cannot find/fit either of the other two.
  2. Yes, there is a difference (but it's one that could easily be fixed if you're trying to match the KGx.5 series). The KGx.2 series uses a phenolic dome for the tweeters while the KGx.5 series uses a poly dome. While the two sound pretty similiar, there is indeed a difference. Klipsch no longer makes/sells the phenolic dome, but they do still sell replacement poly ones. So if you wanted to match a KGx.5, you could still buy a KGx.2 then call 1-800-KLIPSCH and order a replacement dome for the tweeter (which will be poly) to make it sound like your other speakers. Although not directly related to the topic, I wanted to bring up other differences. Both the 3.2 and 3.5 used passive radiators while the 3.5 and 4.5 used ports, but both are froms of venting and the small differences would be transparent to 99% of people. Also the differences between the 5.2 (with one 10" woofer) and 5.5 (that uses two 10" woofers) are substaintial, whereas on all the other models they're minor.
  3. The timbre match should be good between the KG3.5 and KG4.5, but it's keep in mind that the optimum setup is if you exactly the same speakers for all three front speakers. I couldn't quite do that, but I came very close since all three of my front speakers use the same K-85-K horn. I would suggest checking closed auction prices on eBay to see what KG3.5s and 4.5s are going for to really get an idea if that's a good price, but being that you wouldn't have to pay to ship them I suspect it is. You still might see if he would come down $50. Unless you have a really large (and/or wide) room then I wouldn't bother with 7.1 or 6.1. For most HT setups in homes it is truly worthless overkill.
  4. The KLF-C7 would be great if one had KLF-10, 20, or 30s. I've heard of people trying it with large KG speakers (like my 5.5s) but from what I understand it isn't really timbre matched (but it does do a better job of "keeping up" with the large KGs than the KV-3 or KG-2.x).
  5. That's right. Hmmm, well it's not a from a KG, KLF, or CF series. I'm wondering if the driver is from an early Klipsch (dedicated) subwoofer like this one:http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/sw-12.aspx NOTE: I totally missed the fact you mentioned this in your earlier post. I guess I shouldn't have stopped reading...
  6. It appears the speakers have rubber surrounds (not foam ones like you mentioned). And it appears the rubber surround is in good shape on the one you pictured, so I'm not sure the speakers need any services unless you're hearing some voicecoil rub. Have you hooked the up to see how they sound? About the magnet, just because it isn't centered doesn't mean the voicecoil isn't center on the magnet's gap. I've seen off-center magnet a lot so don't sweat that at all. It's hard to say what model they might be from, but it's pretty safe assumption to say their likely from a Heritage line (or may the Professional line). Typically there is a number on the back of the magnet that might shed more light on what they're from. Also, you might want to delete the other thread you started in the Tech section since this seems to be the more active one.
  7. I'm using KG5.5s mains up front with KG3.25s* for rears, and I think the work very well together. I used to have a KV3 for the center, but found it couldn't really keep up with my KG5.5s. So I made a custom center that uses a K-85-K horn tweeter and four 6.5" Klipsch woofers. * Note there really is no such thing as a KG3.25, but I call them that because they are KG3.2s with the passive radiators replaced with ports; they are also in new custom enclosures that fit perfectly in my built-in bookshelves. I may have swapped the textile domes for poly ones, but I'm not sure if I ever actually did that.

  9. I did just noticed that although the KG2.2 and KG2.5 use the same K-86-K tweeter, the dome material is different. I had forgotten that the x.5 models use a poly dome while the x.2 models use a phenolic dome. That said, since you can get the KG2.2 locally (and avoid shipping charges and possible shipping damage) then I still suggest getting it. Then if you really want the tweeter to match the best it can, order a replacement poly dome from Klipsch for $25 (call 1-800-KLIPSCH). Swapping the tweeter dome is a very easy thing that literally 2 minutes to do, and it take no special tools or know-how. And since the phenolic domes are no longer available from Klipsch, you can probably find someone around here who would buy it from you.
  10. Frzninvt, So if the KG2.2 isn't timbre matched to the KG3.5 then just what is it timbre matched to? I suspect you'll claim the KG3.2s. Are you aware the KG3.2 and KG3.5 use the exact same woofer and tweeter? So that would make the KG2.2 just as compatible with the KG3.5 and th KG3.2. Just because the KG2.2 and KG2.5 have different woofers, it doesn't mean they don't have the same timbre. The change in driver model could have been made for reasons other than changing the timbre (like they switched suppliers). So I stand by my claim that the KG2.2 center would be equally as good of a match for his KG3.5s (as KG2.5 center).
  11. Since they use the same K-86-K tweeter, then I'd say they would be very similar. If you really want a perfect match, then you need center that uses the K-84-K tweeter in your KG3.5s -- of course that'll require building/modifying a speaker. So if you're not up to that, then I would go for the KG2.2.
  12. You should be able to sell your SFs and pick up some SBs on eBay. Or you might try selling on Craigslist if you'd prefer to not ship them.
  13. You do not want the SS-1s are front main speakers. Keep them for rear speakers, and find a pair of SB-2s or SB-3s on eBay to use as from speakers. I assume the floor standing models you can no longer use are SF models, right? Are you using the SC-1 for a center? Check out the Related Products on the following link to see speakers that will mate well with your SS-1s: http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/ss-1.aspx
  14. Dude, you've got a pair of Cerwin Vega HED H-15s too!?!? I plan to replace the stock horns in mine with the parts from Klipsch's Heritage line. I already have a pair of K-57-K midrange horns, K-79-K tweeter horns, and a two sets of crossovers -- I just need the time to do it. What year are you H-15s? I found an old sticker in mine that had a inspection date of Oct 1977 I believe. I bought the pair cheap from my high school (because the woofer's foam had rotted so they sounded bad). I had the woofers reconed (by Cerwin Vega) in the early 90s and the crossovers have been reworked, but other than that they're still stock.

  16. I think a much easier way to fix this is to use $2 box of rope caulk from your local hardware store. The stuff is super easy to apply and can easily be removed if you change your mind. I tried it first on one of the K-85-K horns in my KG5.5s. After some lengthly A-B testing, I decided to do the other horn as well.
  17. If you feel the tweeter has issues try swapping the tweeters between the two speakers. If the problem follows the horn tweeter then you know it is the issue, but if it doesn't then it could be the crossover. You can also make sure all three bolts holding the horn to the magnet are reasonably tight. Let us know what you find...
  18. The pic in this post is of a K-85-K horn that came with a KG4.2 that I briefly owned. So with the addition of your "new" type of K-85-K horn, we now know that Klipsch has made at least three different version of this horn.
  19. This pic is of a K-85-K that originally came with my KG5.5s, but I ordered a replacement horn a few years ago and it's the exact same style.
  20. I believe replacement diaphragms are about $30 each, but you might consider replacing the ones in both tweeters because I don't believe Kilpsch sells the textile diaphragms (like your speakers likely have) anymore so you have to get the poly ones. I suggest swapping the tweeters in the speakers and if the problem follows the tweeter then you know its the problem, else if the problem stays with the same speaker then it's likely the crossover. My money is on the tweeter, though. You can call 1-800-KLIPSCH and get the parts you need.
  21. You might want to let Steve know that the tap info on that "corrected" schematic appears to still be wrong. According to specs, the T7A only has 3 taps labeled 2, 1, and 0. Checkout the following thread for the specs on the autoformer as well as some good speculation on how the schematic may have ended up wrong: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/972119/ShowThread.aspx#972119
  22. Hit reply then when you're typing your message look above where you're typing and you should see four tabs labeled: Compose, Options, Related, Preview. The Compose one will be the one selected (by default) but if you select the Options one next to it you'll be allowed to attach a file (via the Add/Update button on that tab).
  23. My pair of KG5.5s don't have any fine mesh screens, and neither did the replacement K-85-K horn I ordered a couple years ago. Is this screen in place (or in addition to) the phase plug? Could you take a picture and post it here (using the Option tab you can attach pics)?
  24. Thanks for the data sheets of those other autoformers! Did you miss my comments above about this Heresy II schematic's autoformer connections not agreeing with the other schematics that show the T7A? Just thought I'd mentioned it again in case is got lost in my request...
