  1. Thanks Omodo for your kind comments, Be careful with the exposed horns. I spent many hours & layers & layers of paint to achieve the finish you see in the photos. Also I had them supplied from ALK in a completely raw finish so I was able to get the desired finish I wanted. Talk to Greg & see if he can help you with this, John
  2. ....& a final one. The light isn't the best to show these to their best, but I'm really pleased with how they turned out. And the sound? Bass is tighter & more defined than before....definitely no more resonances. Greater seperation between the mids & the bass & easier to pick out the bass line.
  3. Horn cab is shallower than before & not as high.....helps take away from some of the bulky look.
  4. Front edges are mitred joints.
  5. ....& then over the top of the W Bin
  6. ...and here's the finished article. Grain follows from bass reflex cab to W Bin.
  7. Just letting you all know I have a set of Beyma 21F's for sale in the "Garage Sale" section, Thanks, John
  8. Those bass horns look like some type of an Altec horn? A 210? I'm not sure.
  9. []Nice work.....what are your plans for the seperate top? Are you looking for a different sound or just a different look? John
  10. ...another shot of the front of the W Bin.....next step is to final sand everything & 3 coats of clear lacquer.
  11. ....and with the new motor board for the Trachorn
  12. I've built new cabinets for the horns from the old ones......I've made them smaller & re veneered them all in Victorian Ash
  13. I've had to veneer the inside of the side panels also......it was too difficult to do this in one piece as you have to go around the brace & the grill stops, so I did it in 2 seperate pieces & had to put a small piece in the middle of the front edge......you can just see it but i'm pretty pleased with how it turned out....it's a lot better than that horrible black staining.
  14. Got all the veneering done over the weekend....I've gone with Victorian Ash this time.....the external panels have yet to be lacquered, but the dog house is done.
  15. At the moment I prefer the light coloured oaks, only because most of my previous speakers were in darker colours....so time for a change. Whatever the colour....they all sound great![]
  16. Rudy, Laminex is a brand name for a generic laminate product that is generally used for kitchen bench tops here in Australia...... (Not sure what you call it in the States - something totally different & obscure, I'm sure!!) It's usually 1mm thick & comes in thousands of colours & textures. Extremely durable....almost waterproof....& easy to apply & trim. Looking good.....John
  17. Arash, The La Scala is one of the classic speakers & it's sound is probably an acquired taste, however I think you'll find it will serve you well. It may need a bit of reinforcement in the bottom end, so a good sub would be handy. If this is your first venture into quality sound speaker systems I think you'll love them. Good luck.
  18. Hey Rudy, FWIW....On my latest rebuild I decided to dispense with the grill cloth as it's a pain to apply....you end up with all those staples on the back & it attracts all that dust. I'm going to apply some textured Laminex to the front & sides (but still leave the horn exposed - pics soon).....gives a very neat finish & is a lot more permanent. Great to see these babies coming alive!!!
  19. The idea you have for the grille should work well.....I like to see the Heritage look of the LS though. (These cabs will have grilles....sort of like the Belle). Gee, if only you'd sent me you're single cab before I finished all the hard work!! []
  20. I thought they would be too cumbersome & heavy also, but because the cabs are split into 3 sections it's not as bad as you would imagine. (Bass reflex cab - W Bin - Mid cab). Plus the ply is reasonably light. I've done the knuckle test & have to say that I'm not overwhelmed by the result. The side panels are completely dead towards the rear of the cabinet, but there still appears to be some ringing towards the front edge........hopefully the resonance will have shifted to an inaudible frequency!!! [:^)]
  21. Rudy, You could try some insulation & see how that sounds.....for sure you are going to need something in the cabinet to dampen things down. I've tried white polyester insulation & also fibreglass insulation in my LS bass reflex enclosures & I preferred the sound with the fibreglass insulation. Your cabinets look awesome .....you've done a great job!!
  22. Here's a shot showing the new thicker front edges.....need to take a break for now & will start on the veneering next week.
  23. I've emptied a whole carton of 500 screws & then a couple more!!
