  1. Thanks for the graphs - I reckon it's pretty similar to what I'm hearing. I've sent an email to djk to ask him to chime in with some info on the passive EQ & low frequency cut off filter. No reply as yet.
  2. "Btw, the mod looks real nice. Does the port bin just get sealed by the weight of the cabinet, or do you have a way of fastening the two together?" Dr Who, I just have the bass & horn section sitting on top of the bass reflex cabinet. The sealing tape I ended up using seems to be soft enough to compress & create a seal, but not too soft that it completely compresses down to nothing. I can't detect any air leaks around the perimeter & there's plenty of air coming out of the ports.
  3. I've found the crossovers pretty amazing & can't wait to get the horns up & running. I don't have any plans as such, but the bass reflex cabs are built the same width & depth as the LS. The height is 10 inches internal height & the ports are 4 inch diameter & 7 inches long.
  4. Here's the thread showing the measurement details....Al you should be able to apply this to the Belle in a similar fashion. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/65908.aspx?PageIndex=4
  5. And here's the whole system...should look good once I get them veneered. Still the Trachorns to go...Al says still a couple of weeks away.
  6. So..... sealed aroung the perimeter of the dog house opening....& used off cuts to double seal any potential gaps. Then put another seal around the external sides. I cut all pieces slightly oversize so they would butt up tightly.
  7. And the build details...this is what I used to seal between the BR cab & the main Cabs...thay just sit on top.
  8. And now I have the bass reflex cabinets finished. Wanted to hear the results first before I went to the trouble of veneering them to match the main cabinets...I shouldn't have worried. They sound just great! I have no reason to doubt the claim that they extend the response down to the 30HZ area. I remember reading a thread on here somewhere that published the frequency response curve after this mod, but I can't seem to find it again...maybe someone can help with this as I have no way to perform any measurements. All I can say is I now have the bottom end that I have been looking for & could not go back to listening to them stock. Bottom end is now much more extended in the bass guitar with far greater resolution...I'm hearing things that I didn't realise were on the disc. The LS still have the punch that they are famous for...so this mod just seems to extend the response without affecting the upper bass. I'm really pleased with the combination of the ALK Universals & the bass reflex cabinets..so much so that if I hadn't already ordered the Trachorns I would live very happily with them as they are. To my ears they are as good as a KHorn but with the punch of a LS.
  9. Ray,Going to start with the new crossovers (ALK Universals)...then the bass reflex mod...then the Trachorns ( as they are still a couple of weeks away from delivery). Installed the new crossovers after making them up from the kit & really impressed. They have changed the whole sound of the speaker in terms of the listenability. The difference in resolution is quite amazing. Right through the whole frequency range the resolution is far superior...the bass, the mids & the top end. A more coherent sound...less congestion...gone is the glare & this is replaced by a smoothness & quality that is addictive. It's like I have a new pair of speakers!
  10. Rudy, Can you describe to us whether you feel that these new settings actually sound better to you or not. Sometimes I feel that we strive for a flat frequency response at the expense of musicality. Sometimes flat frequency response is not always the best sound or the sound that our ears appreciate.
  11. Rudy, Yes the jigsaw is the way to go...set up some guides so you get a nice straight cut rather than trying to do it by freehand. Even if you're a little bit out your grill cloth will cover any slight mistakes. It'll be a while before I get mine installed in the top cabs as I have to build my ALK universals, finish the bass reflex cabs, etc, etc....there's always some change going on....but yes, will post pics when all complete. And of course I'll be setting them up first just sitting on top of the cabs to hear the sound first...after all that's the most important thing...then we'll get them looking OK. Priorities.
  12. Rudy,My tops are in a seperate cabinet assembly as per my avator. I plan to remove the grill cloth...enlarge the size of the hole for the horn to fit in with a jigsaw & then refit the grill cloth back on. I'll be doing something different here though as I want to see the wooden horn, so I'll make the new cutout....mount the horn flush with the motor board & fit the grill cloth on the motor board only, so that the horn is left exposed. I'm getting my Trachorns unfinished so will be clear lacquering the front of the horn that will be visible & black lacquer on the rear. As I have my tweeters mounted on top of the mid horn cabinet I have enough room to fit the Trachorn in the original horn cabinet.
  13. You're right, Araldite is a brand name & it's a two part epoxy adhesive. Great for bonding all sorts of surfaces & sets like a rock with great holding strength....you will never get it undone again!
  14. And the bottom brace. Have used 3/4 inch ply for this job...100mm PVC pipe for the ports glued in with Araldite & sealed with silicone. All edges of the cabinet sealed with silicone to ensure an airtight seal.
  15. Started construction of the bass reflex mod that will fit underneath the La Scala cabinet. 1 box almost complete...still to construct the other one. I'll try the bass reflex cabinets in position first & if all is well will then veneer them to match the existing cabinets. I've added a brace on the bottom of the enclosure & also one from front to back across the top as I figured there will be a fair weight sitting on top of these. Will post my listening impressions when all is done....other mods coming up shortly are ALK Trachorns & ALK Universal crossovers. Have also just changed over the Crites stamped frame woofers for the cast frame models. Listening impressions are of a huge difference between the two.... not only more extended, but also a lot cleaner from the lower bass to the upper bass. This cleanness has somehow also improved the top end, with that being easier to hear & pick out different instruments. Any one else have a similar experience? Can't wait for the Trachorns to arrive....Al says they've been on holidays at Martinelli...you think they would have built my horns before they went on holidays!!
  16. The VOTT was supplied in various configurations, however the most popular for home use was the 16 inch 416 series bass speaker coupled with either an 811 or 511 horn with the 802 series driver (tangerine phase plug). Some other combos were with the 16 inch 515 series bass driver (more power handling) with the 1005B horn & 288 HF driver, Crossover frequencies varied from 500 to 800 to 1200 Hz. Most models had no trouble getting frequency response down to at least 50 Hz, although even Altec recommended their bass reflex designs for more effective low end response. I have had A7's & still own a pair of model 19's. I thought the A7's were tremendous...lots of impact, very realistic sounding, but I couldn't live with the limited low end...pretty much the same as I'm now experiencing with my LS. (Bass reflex mod now in progress with them). I much prefer the sound of the Model 19's....very warm & detailed with that big huge realistic sound. I haven't heard another speaker sound as real as these to my ears.
  17. So now you have the plans...here's something I found that details the build procedure. If you're going to build them from scratch I'd recommend building the top & bottom section seperately (a la LS 2's). You will be able to experiment with turning the bass bins into the corners & they are also a lot easier to transport around if you have to move them. Build%20Plans.txt
  18. Just wondering....woudn't that be more like an original LaScala and not a LaScala II? The II's were 1" MDF (or so I thought) and the tweek for the originals was the brace as you installed (and I'd like to do to mine) Either way, looks mighty da** fine!! I call my clones LS 2's. You're right....the originals were 3/4 ply & then you added the brace to tame the resonance. As far as I'm aware the factory LS2's use 1"" MDF for the sides & the doghouse to achieve the same result. I think they figured the extra thickness of the material to tame the resonance was a better look than the brace. The other reason I call mine LS2's is because I have the split cabs. The photo I posted previously showing the ported bottom is not mine. My cabs are as per my avatar with split bass & top end cabs.
  19. I have LS2 clones made from 3/4 inch ply with braces. Crites cast frame woofers, K55 mids, Crites Ct125 tweeters, Crites A4500 crossovers. The most challenging part has been to try to get the bass response I'm looking for. Have tried subs but they never really sound the same. At the moment I haver a pair of ALK tractrix horns & Universal crossovers on order & am anxious to hear them. My thoughts are that the Traxtrix should open up the mid range & with the universals I will be able to attenuate the mids to the level I want. Depending on the results here I may go to the extended bass reflex cabinet underneath the LS to extend the bottom end. Will post results when finished.
  20. Yes, good idea.I'm actually doing some more mods on my LS. I have a pair of Tractrix horns & Universal crossovers coming from ALK. Will listen to this first & then decide if I will proceed with the bass reflex cabinet underneath the LS to extend the bottom end. Pic attached.
  21. Anyone have experience with an Ashly XR1001 & a DBX 223XL? Would just like some opinions before I hand out the hard earned. Application is to run 2 dedicated stereo subs from approx 50 or 60 Hz down. Thanks, John
  22. Thanks from all of us who care for preserving this piece of history....what a magnificent cabinet!
  23. Larry,Yes, tried them in that location & the result was identical.....still greatly reduced bass at the listening position. The best result I've had so far is with Chris's idea of a partial wall behind the listening position to effectively split the room up. Thanks to all for your helpful comments & the interesting info on the bass traps....much appreciated.
  24. Thanks Chris,Already have the false corner idea on the drawing board...should have had that done when the house was built...it was one of those many details that got overlooked. Will be able to get this up fairly soon. Love the idea of the backdrop & it would be up tomorrow if it wasn't for the WAF. Will work away at that, as I think you have come up with a top idea here & I think it would look good too. Thanks, John Tried the backdrop idea today....got my better half to hold a piece of 2400 x 1200 board on top of a cabinet behind the seating couch. It improved the sound of the bottom end by at least 80%. So now to get the WAF we are throwing around the idea of a storage cabinet approx. 2.4m wide X 2.2m high which will effectively achieve the result I am looking for & satisfy my better halfs storage needs, Win Win.
