  1. So it really is true. Stupid is as stupid does. Forest, if you can handle the truth feel free to e-mail me at boodybum@aol.com. I will be more than happy to enlighten you with facts. If not then I'm sure I'll see the cliche regurgitated ditto head rhetoric. Going into detailed discussions here will be way off topic for this board.
  2. quote: Originally posted by PhilH: Disco Stu: I must admit, I appreciate disco much more today than I did during its heyday...especially when you compare it to the Top40 wasteland that is out there today. PhilH Maturity can be a wonderful thing. Disco music is all about feeling good. For the beginners in this music, Rhino is a good place to start. Like so many things, we didn't appreciate the good we had until we begin to experience some real crap. As a President Clinton supporter, I think more people will realize how good things were during his term. When things are good why fight it. Good like, Khorns, HK amps, Disco and President Clinton.
  3. Fortunately for disco fans, we are free thinkers and dont live by the words of Travolta or any one else.
  4. I agree 100% with you Ray and then some. Back to the topic. Hey Ear, I know we went on about Krell amps but I thought it was interesting reading a test report on Boulder's preamp in this month's Stereophile. I sorta got the impression that Jonathon Scull might feel the same about Krell amps as I do. To quote him: You want it fast and furious? Mate the Boulder 1012 with a fast amp like the Linn Klimax. Want something a bit more sensual? Go for amps like the Krell. I guess being a disco guy I prefer something that can get me outta my seat. Since H/K amps are among other things, known their speed and transient virtue, I'm partial to them.

  6. Hi Ear. I really wasn't picking a fight with you but since we're debating this. Spec wise, Krells are fine as are many fine amplifiers out there. Like most will admit, listening is the deciding factor. In the late '70s their were many amps with outstanding specs but sounded bad for a variety of reasons. Anyway, back to the Krells. Several months ago I was shopping for speakers and was this close to getting my dream, a pair of Khorns. Well the wife shot down that $6000 idea. My second choice for a lot less money were a pair of Magnepan 1.6QR that I first heard on Mark Levisons. They sounded great. Well I went back to the audio salon and this time the 1.6's were being powered buy monoblock Krells. They sounded smooth but lifeless, as if the pace of the music was lagging. I was a little disappointed and was reconsidering the speaker purchase. By chance I went back to the store a few weeks later and this time the speakers were being powered a Rotel amp. While the Rotel sounded a little grainy compared to the Krell, the music was driving me to tap my feet. I ended up buying the Maggies. I heard the Krells a few more times at home and at the store and while I'll admit they don't sound bad, something just seems lacking to my ears.
  7. Ok. I am one of those guys who are less than enthusiastic about Krell amps. I wouldn't say prejudiced. It's not that they sound terrible, it's just that I didn't find the amps particularly musical, especially given the price for them. One dealer of Krell amps felt the same and said perhaps it's because their amps do so much processing that it robs some of it's musicallity. Who knows. I'm partial to HK amps and I'm sure some people think they suck. That's what makes this hobby entertaining to discuss.
  8. Hey Clint. I've been saying the same thing for the last few years. I had a ear labage several years ago and like you I couldn't believe how much my hearing improve all around. At least there's two of us now.
  9. quote: Originally posted by Olaf: Micro-Acoustics 2002 cartridge discorules Do they still make the 2002e cartridge? I've wanted one of those for about 20 years. They are great cartridges and they have a much warmer sound than my old AT14. I think the company went out of business 15 years ago. I was fortnate a few years ago to get a couple of replacement stylii for the cartridge. I think a few places bought up what the company had left of stylii and cartridges and made them available for sale. There was one place on the net that up until 3 months ago that still had the the 630 and 282e cartridges. I went to there site recently and noticed that they longer offer any of these or any of there higher quality cartridges. I purchased it 22 years ago because of its excellent transient response, low (1.2g) tracking force capability and it's clean sound.
  10. Well Mobile. I guess I can extend an invite to you as well to listen to my system. For HT I use SB3's and a RCA dolby surround system. Not too great but good enough for movies. For my serious stereo listening I have Magneplanar 1.6qr speakers, an HK 3370 receiver, a kenwood cd 406 changer, a 1978 kenwood manual direct drive turntable and a Micro-Acoustics 2002 cartridge. Oops, almost forgot those dreaded Home Depot 12 gauge zip cords.
  11. Hey Mobile. Try a HK Signature 2.1 or 1.5 power amp. I haven't heard their newest PA series amps but I suspect they offer similar performance.
  12. Ouch. Instead of cough syrup Mobile, how about a switch to decaf. I've listened to and have had Krell, HK and Scott amps in my system. I have also listened for extended periods to Adcom, Onkyo, Rotel, NAD, McIntosh, Cary, SimAudio and Arcam amps and or receivers just to name some. All of them sounded good. Their differences were minor and a few are over rated at normal listening levels. I even listened to various speaker cables and I don't think that I can say in a double blind test I can reliably distinguish between God's Holy cable at $10000/ft versus Home Depot's 12 gauge. Perhaps you can. I personally prefer HK amps and Home Depot 12 gauge cables. Like Khorn's, they don't resonate with the audiophile crowd but I let my ears make decisions.
  13. With all do respect Mobile, as one of the troglodytes, surprise, surpise, I have listened to many amps, tubes included. I think Adcom makes a nice amp and I don't think their amps get blown away by other makers. If you don't like Adcom's, I can respect that. Don't assume that the rest of us have to draw the same conclusions you have.
  14. If you look carefully at the article he performs the measurements using cables 100 meters long and I think some of these meassurements occurred at very high frequencies or very short pulse reponses. The key thing is the unrealistic cable lengths which makes this article somewhat dubious. These lengths are longer than a football field. In addition, I saw no comparison between regular and exotic high dollar cables. In that same issue, the magazine reviewed high dollar cables. I suspect the cable test gives the impression that the cables reviewed has merit. I'm not buying it.
  15. And I thought my political discussions were heated. While I am inclined to support what James has to say, I have heard some tubes or toobs like Cary that sounded magical. It doesn't have to be a either or proposition. I'm inclined to go less with tubes because I wonder if some of that magic is the relatively high measured distortion. Also, I am most concerned about replacing tubes and possibly have an entirely different circuit. Having said that, I've heard some SS I didn't like, like some of the Krell amps. It's all just taste though and I really can't say I've heard a hi fi amp, tube or SS, that sounded awful.
  16. Hey Colin. You seemed to be sold on the performance of electret transducers. I have a Micro-Acoustics 2002 cartridge that over 20 years old though the stylus is fairly new. You would love this cartridge. The accolades(sp) you've heaped on your electret headphones applies equally to this wonderful cartridge.
  17. James and Spider. Check the HK website. They've been going on about this for decades. In fact I think James is recalling HK ads from the seventies. While HK was spec'ing and leading the way on this, brands like Pioneer, Marantz and several others were poo pooing wideband, low feedback designs in favor of 200 wpc, high damping factor(thus high negative feedback) amps. So to get back to your statement about specs for TIM and IM, HK specs it and explains it.
  18. My choice regardless of price is Harman Kardon. Simply the most neutral amp to my ears. Not to mention they pioneered much of the amplifier principles eons ago that are used by many compettitors today. I also like NAD and Rotel. All 3 can be had at reasonable prices.
  19. Ok. What I hear as a tube advantage is in the midrange. Tubes to my ears and many of those who favor tubes have a liquid, more natural ease in midrange presentation. This is most noticeable when levels get high. This is in part due to the clipping characteristics of tubes. When tubes begin to clip or max out in power, they generally distort with even order harmonics which is more tolerable to the ear. Bipolar transistors distort with high orders of odd harmonics, 3rd, 5th, etc. This is much less pleasing to the ear. Some also say the highs are less glaring with tubes. I suspect that there is some high frequency roll off with some amplifiers however. Personally, I believe solid state still has an overall advantage tubes. Both have strengths and weaknesses but for me the weaknesses of solid state are minor compared to those of tube amps.
  20. I can still hear past 15kHz and I'm 41. I hope that Klipsch addresses this tweeter issue in this interim where they are getting their Heritage s@#t together.
  21. I subsribe and will be looking for it. I get the feeling they're biased against Klipsch, esp the Heritage line.
  22. Hey Ray. You da man. Do I have permission to reproduce or retransmit your eloquent explanation or are you gonna me charging keashhh?
  23. Thanks ShapeShifter and Jobman. Keep 'em coming if you find more.
  24. I'll check out that Sade cd. Is the music any good?
  25. Has anyone here purchased any cds with cd text info. My kenwood cd changer, cd 406, has the ability to read this info. I haven't seen any cds with this however. Perhaps you guys know of some. My preference is Jazz, R&B or Classical.
