  1. Jabez, I too am (used to be) a quintet owner. Over a year ago I made the leap into the real world with Reference 3's. Excellent choice, their here to stay! Now you made a remark about RS vs RB for surrounds. I would like to first say that I have 4 RS-3's. I only have two hooked up because of my current home dimensions. This is kind of sad considering I have had the second pair boxed up in the storage room waiting for our new home and they've been there for over a year. (hopefully we'll be in this summer) I would like to point out that the RS's are not dipolar but rather WDST (Wide Dispersion Surround Technology). I only bring this up because there is a distinct difference. For info on WDST go to the Klipsch home page and select Products, then Home Audio, then Home Audio FAQ, then go down to Surround Speakers. There is also an old post that is worth the reading that talks about rear channel selections. http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=13570&forumID=69&catID=19&search=1&searchstring=&sessionID={4D9063DD-84F3-416C-B232-382A71BFD2F0} Matthew
  2. Doug it is my limited understanding that it will not improve interlaced TV's. Most HDTV's have pirks that will improve images from a lesser source like a standard dvd player, vcr, ect. But I'm fairily confident that when using a interlaced television a progresive scan dvd player will be of absolutely no visually enhancement. In fact when using a progressive player you have to change a setting, allowing you to even use it as an interlaced source. Hope this helps Matthew P.S. here is some info, its long reading but good info. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_4/dvd-benchmark-part-5-progressive-10-2000.html
  3. Thanks DD. From looking at the track listings it appears to be just what I'm looking for. It's on its way. Much appreciated Matthew
  4. I've been looking into calibration/setup disks and was wondering if any one can give suggetions. What I am hoping to find is one that has audio frequency sweeps that are in chapters or something similar. I would like to test my frequency response and would like to be able to set the disk on a specific frequency and test its SPL. Unlike the frequency sweep contained in the THX setup section that comes on some DVD's like on X-men that just starts at 200 and goes down to 20 with no way of having a constant tone at a specific frequency. I would also like to know what frequency range the disks have. 25k-10hz? 20k-20hz? All of the product reviews I have read do not tell you any thing specific about the adio tests. Any info is appreciated. Matthew
  5. I'm in Washington State. But it still sounds like they ship immediately. I've been looking into SVS for a little over 2 years. When I was first investigating they didn't ship for a month or two. I'm glad to hear that they are going out quickly. I should have it the end of the week. I've waited two years and now I have to wait another week!!!
  6. I too was in somewhat of a similar situation. I have a Denon 3802 with 7 Klipsch Reference 3's. I have an old Optimus Dolby ProLogic reciever that I am using to push two Rockford Fosgate Series 1 speakers in a dual bandpass box. The speakers and box are car equipment. In case you haven't heard of Series 1 speakers they were the cheapest speakers Rockford Fosgate made back in 1993. I have had them since high school. Now although these were nothing compared to say.....an SVS PC+16-46, they did bring a low end into my system. I have had my Denon and Klipsch stuff for about 1 1/2 yrs and have been using my car equipment for that amount of time. I had considered purchasing a KLM sub from Costco for $100 on many ocations, but I just could not get myself to spend money on some thing I was going to get rid of. The more I saved the sooner I could get what I really wanted. An SVS! I also had that much more money to play with. My SVS is now been ordered and will soon be here . I am convinced it will be well worth the wait. My advise to you is use the car subs you have and save for the sub you want. After all with the $200 you have you are 1/3 on your way to an SVS PCi25-31
  7. I have just placed my order for the much awaited addition to my Home Theater Family. The SVS 16-46 PC-Plus. I was just wandering how long, from order to arrival, your's took. I could just ask them but that would not satisfy my bragging urges. I guess strutting around the house is not fullfilling enough.

    Eagles HFO?

While I was in the store looking at purchasing this disk, I read the back and noticed that it said Seven Bridges Road was in DTS. It didn't say anything about the rest of the DVD being in DTS or even DD. I was hoping those of you who own it could enlighten me about this. I would really like to det it if it has some sort of 5.1 encoding. 9. "Klipsch produces a unique surround speaker that utilizes a technology called Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST). Each WDST enabled speaker contains two Tractrix® Horn drivers and a woofer. Each horn covers a 90-degree arc and the combination of the two covers a full 180 degrees. This coverage gives excellent ambiance without having to use the walls to reflect sound. The controlled pattern of each horn (what we call "controlled directivity") leads to excellent localization of sounds because there is sound directed at the listening position, regardless of where in the room you are seated. And because the WDST surround speaker does not rely on wall reflections, it can be mounted in many different places in a room, leading to greater flexibility with placement. It is rare to have perfect side-wall positions available due to the placement of doors, drapes, furniture and such. WDST design delivers enveloping ambience WITH localization for the ideal surround sound result AND gives you the flexibility of placement to solve room design problems." Thanks for the tip on where to find this info Keith. I think in my position I will benefit the most by keeping my RS-3's. Besides, if I ever reconfigure to use monopolar speakers in the rear I would have to buy a new set of mains and center for the lonely set of RS-3's ) Matthew ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6)
  10. The dealer is willing to work with me, but that is if I pay retail. I was able to talk them down a bit on this seven speaker package I purchased. They will let me trade in the RS's if I pay retail for the RB's. Unfortunatly this will give them back the money I was able to talk them out of. The basement room is not framed yet and will not be for a little while still, so four side surrounds could be possible. (A longer room, this could allow for more seating) Matthew ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6)
  11. My room has 3 1/2 walls. The right wall is the half wall. By this I mean that the wall goes from the back of the room only half way toward the front. Mounting side and rear surrounds will not be a problem. I will be able to mount them per manual recommendations. I'm getting the feeling that the general concensous is that the RS-3's will work, but do they provide the optimal sound for movies. Are they really a dieing technology? The system will eventually be in the basement in a rectangular room. I guess I'm feeling a little presure do to the fact that my time line for returns ends 4/2. matthew ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6)
  12. I too have a Denon reciever and a Reference 3 setup. The speakers are a new addition. I went with the RS-3's for side and rear effects. I have four of them. In the Denon manual it says "For the greatest sense of surround envelopment, diffuse radiation speakers such as bipolar types, or dipolar types, provide a wider dispersion than is possible to obtain from a direct radiating speaker (monopolar)." (This is accompanied with a picture showing four diffuse speakers.) Is not the point of suround systems envelopment? The manual also shows an illustration showing the A/B surround options, "A" with diffuse speakers for both side and rear effects, and "b" with monopolar speakers for music. This implies that a person who wants an optimum system would use diffuse for movies and monopolar for music. My purchase is only one week old. Did I make a mistake? I have not opened the second set of RS-3's. Should I take them back and get a set of RB-3's, before it's too late. ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6)
  13. Thanks for the input. I appreciate the insight and experience that all of you bring to this forum. I will definetly try both settings and see what I prefer. I do have a sub, but it's kind of a laughing matter. I have a dual bandpass enclosure with two Rockford Fosgate 12" series one speakers that I bought eight years ago in high school for my car. They happen to be 8ohm speakers. I run them with ports firing down, propt up by Tupperware containers, being pushed by my old Optimus Prologic reciever in stereo mode. Needless to say its all boom and no punch. As much as I am lusting after a SVS sub, this round of purchases went to the References and I haven't been able to think straight since! Again, thanks for the suggestions MattG ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6)
  14. I picked myself up a set of reference speakers this weekend and I'm curious what you guys with Reference-3's have your recievers set at. I am using a Denon 3802 which has 110W/7. The RF-3's obviously handle the large setting but I'm wondering if any one has ran the RC-3 and the RS-3 at large for a long time. I currently have them all set to large and it sounds great I just don't what to blow the lesser rated surrounds and center. I just upgraded from 6 Quintets so in my eye there is not a dang one of these that is small! ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6) This message has been edited by MattG on 03-25-2002 at 03:46 AM
  15. Hey arf, I used six quintet sats in a 6.1 setup and found it to work just fine. Now, I have never owned a quintet center to be able to compare the sat to center sound, but for a starter with a budget a sat would probably be the best way to go. At least it worked for me. ------------------ Denon 3802 RC-3 center RF-3 mains RS-3 rear & surrounds(4) Panasonic DVD-RV26 Denon DCM3700 CD changer Fisher 27" TV Klipsch Quintets (6) This message has been edited by MattG on 03-25-2002 at 03:22 AM
  16. Matched impedence gives you the most effecient power transfer. If you used an unbalanced system it probably require you to turn the source power up increasing your chance for distorsion. I don't know how much this will effect the sound. MattG ------------------ Denon 3802 Klipsch Quintets (6) Both in route to my house!
  17. the only problem with that whole two room stuff is that is uses the same amplifiers to power the second room as it uses for your rear surrounds. (I think?) So you could not be using the 6.1 or 7.1 formats and power two speakers in another room. I don't know about you but I plan on using those rear channels in the living room. You see, really this is an option that is never used, just one thrown in to be able to convince my wife that it is such a wonderful receiver and that we NEED to get one . 18. I'm not sure how much interference you will actually hear for what ever length you are running next to your house wires, but what I do know is that any interference you get is going to be caused by the magnetic field that is rising and colapsing around the power wires as a result of AC current. The amount of insulation is irelevant. It is the shielding of a wire that protects against inductive interference. As mentioned before twisted pair wire also protects from interference. This is because both wires are equally affected by the interference thus canceling each other. Again, I do not know if any of this interference will actually be heard in your system but if you are concerned then just keep your speaker wires a little ways away from your house wires. I mean don't set your speaker wires on top of the house wires so that they are touching. 6-12 inches will be fine. Also run them perpendicular to the house wires when you need to cross them.
  19. Hey Farrow, What stage is your order in? Mine is "In Process". I hope this is not the eternal line. MattG
  20. Oogins, I'm hoping the 3802 will solve all my Quintet w/sub concerns. I'll set all the speakers to small and the adjustable sub crossover to 120dB. I am going with an SVS sub. I have decided on the 16-46CS with the Samson amp. This will allow room for a second sub later. Although I not sure why most people who have posted about their purchase of a SVS have bought the 25-31. I guess for me extension takes a little more priority. The second sub will provide the higher frequency output when needed. This, of course will be purchased after I replace my Quintets with R?-3's.
  21. Oogins, Crutchfield.com has the Denon 3802 priced at $999.95 and Goodguys.com has it listed for $999.99 with no tax and free shipping! I'm not sure how things work shipping to Canada. I guess I just used the 1+1=2 theory; authorized dealers advertise suggested retail price and two authorized Denon web dealers have lowered their prices. 22. Wow. Hey did you see that Denon dropped the price on the 3802 down two hundred dollars? This message has been edited by MattG on 11-02-2001 at 11:22 PM
  23. Hey oogins, I am faced with a similar problem in that I have Quintets (6 with no center) and am looking for a good sub. I e-mailed SVS with the question about the higher frequency output of the SVS subs. I quote their response "I'm not sure where the Quintets peter out but the 25-31CS will easily extend to 100-120Hz. The problem is that your Denon (I think?) has a fixed crossover at 80Hz when your speakers are set to small. You could well have a small gap inbetween but it won't be due to any limitation of the SVS." I told them that I was going to be using the Denon 3802. TheEars made reference to the cutoff point in his post when using the 5800. If this is the case, it would not matter what sub you use to try to get to high bass frequencies if the reciever is going to cutoff any thing above 80ish. BTW, what are you using to push your Quintets, and how do they sound for you? Hey, could you try hooking up one of your satellites as the center channel and let me know if there is much sound difference? As I said above I don't have a center and would like to know from a person with one, if it is going to be worth the hastle of obtaining one. MattG

    Quintets??

It was a cool autumn morning, family all asleep. A peacefull calm over the house, there I was reading the most recent posts. Taking a look at the U-bid site mentioned on one post I saw a good deal on some Quintet satellites. I placed a moderate bid, then went to work. While at work I was realizing that these are not the RF-3's, RC-3, RS-3's I had been dreaming of buying and hoped I would lose the bid. SURPRISE!!! I won. So now I am wondering "What the hell am I going do with six quintet satellites?!" Now my questions. Is a Quintet satellite going to make a good center channel speaker? Are these speakers going to do well as a primarily HT set-up? My plans are to upgrade my reciever to a Denon 3802 (this was the plan before the Quintets) and use a SVS sub which I have not picked a model yet. My wife does not like the TV or radio turned up very loud so I know I would never have the listening level that alot of you have. But even so will I out grow these speakers fast? They are new speakers unopened. Should I consider selling the off to people at work, or something? I am sure I could get what I paid for them. Thanks MattG This message has been edited by MattG on 10-29-2001 at 10:20 PM
