  1. twu, A few years back.. I was so determined to get a pair of Lascalas that bought a book, off ebay, on how to build your own clones of Klipschorns, Belles, LaScalas, and Heresys. Infact it contained plans for Altec Voice of the Theaters, Jensen Imperials (Wall, Corner and Freestanding) and EV Patricians. It was very clear about what was needed and had 95% solution to what each speaker needed in Raw materials.. For a novice woodworker like me Heresys were the only one I could atempt on my own to create. BUT if you found plans and a good cabinet maker/ woodworker/ or home builder they should be able to reproduce a fairly good copy of the cabinets for a lot less than retail of a authentic new pair. Also, there is a great thread about Heresys here and shows you everything that you need to make your own... and I am willing to venture that there is a Lascala resource too..That may shorten your wait. There some on eBay as we type.. they are ugly.. but you can make them better. do a search. Lastly, if you want something, buy it. You'll never be happy until you get what you want. Find all the Heritage dealers, spend some time with them over phone or in the showroom.. you may end up with a better deal the $6000 a pair. This is your Music we're talking about. -Bill
  2. Bottom line upfront, I change my recommendataion to most affordable A/V Reciever. It will offer more flexiblity in the future, should you decide to upgrade. http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=567576&CTID=5000300 WHY? At risk of making this more complicated BUT for the benifit of fidelity and technology, even though you stated your desire just to have stereo, most basic of the surround sound recievers offer more that what the "stereo" receivers offer. Not just in the way of more surround sound channels.. It that they offer Digital inputs, for CD players, Apple Airport Express, etc, that offer better sound quality that going the analog or non -digital route (two RCA cables for left and right, opposed to one fiber optic or coaxial cable) Most stereo recievers don't have a subwoofer output and you may want that in the future.. Some even optimize the speakers for the room that they play in.. Since I am a big fan of Best Buy, go there with your favorite CDs and listen to some speakers hooked up to the reciever of your choosing. I highly recommend you go EARLY in the morning, on a week day if you can. They normally have all the popular models in stock and on display. Now if you don't see the RF-5 or 7 then find a Set of towers, from Klipsch, that you can listen to so you can get a Idea what you in for. The airport express uses "Airtunes" and it a feature built in to iTunes only when you install an Airport Express in your home, which is also sold at Best Buy. Now if you detest Besy Buy, do a dealer search on this site for those who carry Klipsch speakers. Who knows you may find a dealer who carries the coveted Heresy and you might walk away with a pair of those.. http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/heresy-iii-overview/ Keep us posted.. -Bill
  3. Klipsch Speakers will not fail you in any respect for Metal! The limiting factors are this in (no particular order) -Size -Budget and everthing else is related to those to factors. If you weigh size as a limiting factor, you will run out of Klipsch models before money (budget). If you weigh budget, some form of Sub + Speaker setup will get you "in" recommendation based on size. Heresy III + 2 RT-12d Cornwall III + 2 RT-12d Klipschorn + 4 RT-12ds Jublee + 2 KPT-684 MCM + 4 KPT-684 back to reality and budget based..In this case my recommendation for $500, $1000, $2000, $4000, $8000 2 x Pro Media 2.1 RB-51 + RW-10d F-1 + 2 RW-10d Cornwall III Klipschorn -Bill
  4. twu, LaScalas are big. Look at my profile to see how they compare in size. They are, beyond a reasonable doubt, one of the finest availbe loudspeakers for the home at any price. That being said, Sonically, I have never reached their upper limit to how loud they play. For music they have everything covered. They won't let you down in movies either. It's just that modern movies contain extreme low frequency information- which warrants a dedicated subwoofer to take advantage of what the media presents. ( I got a little crazy with the whole horn loaded and sub idea.. Hindsight, I'd get a pair of some top level subs from JL Audio, SVS, Seaton Sound, Danley, Epik, Element Designs, Velodyne, or Paradigm) Depending on your patience, you can look for used ones. I am sure someone here will alert the others should a pair come up for sale. Now, buying used, you find a pair that are not in good shape, you can test your patience and refurbish them (pay some one or do it yourself). Buying new, well, that is a treat! Egads, $6000! Might aswell order some custom veneer while your at it, you won't be dissappointed. _Bill
  5. Ooh ooh That Kings of Leon looks like it has great potential.. What a great band, would have never thought they would be good. One of the BEST Concert DVD is definatley Fantasia 2000. BUT You've got to watch ICE CUBE, EMINEM, DR. DRE and SNOOP DOGG's "Up in Smoke Tour" The mastering on the DVD is amazing, and you must hear the Flame FX Blasts and the GIANT Laughing skull move to all 5.1 Channels.. Did anyone say Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms"?? Anyways, Amazon's got the these lists.. Here and Here _Bill
  6. Yes, a long december! Just so you can feed my virus can you please take pictures of the unboxing!? Photos capturing the several moments from your doorstep to there new position, and include close ups on the details ( Walnut Veneer, Riser, Speaker Connectors, Grill w/ Logo ) I am gonna get some when I move into a new house next fall.. -Bill
  7. David, I know! Even David Fremer and some other peeps at Stereophile rave about the Airport Express as an Audio Component. Even if you don't get a T-amp and you get something like a stereo reciever from best buy.. because my only arguments againts what I previously stated is More than one source, remote and radio. Example Reciever http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200028 I have both. Mac and PC. I prefer the Mac. -Bill aside from being a huge Klipsch fan I am a Apple Fan, Corvette Fan, Land Rover Fan, (VW aircooled and MKI Rabbit), Red Sox Fan, and Patriots Fan
  8. Go for it. Wait for a local pair, if you don't like it you can always use them elsewhere or resell them. I know I like mine for surrounds. I think at least once a week one is able to find a pair Heresies for sale, between Ebay, Craigstlist, Audiogon, and other for sale sites. To go even further, I have my google reader run searches as RSS feeds in all of these areas. Every day some is selling something Klipsch and it's great to see what comes up. I'll add that I am using crazedlist, a national craigsist search engine in conjunction with my RSS feed reader. If you are not sure what I am talking about, sign up for Google Reader, Search Craigstlist for "Klipsch" -scroll to the bottom and copy the RSS feed code, and paste it in Google Reader as a new feed. Next in Google Reader there is a browse for stuff link, then in that link there is a search feature, select and use the pull down menu for ebay and enter "Klipsch" in the search field ... GoogleReader-ebay feed link for Klipsch Heresy. With all the Heresy speakers for sale and the resource of this thread and this thread the possibilities are unlimited! What we all have to decide is buy a Heresy, of any vintage, and leave it be, upgrade components, refinish/reveneer the exterior, buy brand new, or buy brand new w/ custom veneer.. Personally, I debate to buy brand new and custom veneer or go stock.. -Bill
  9. Given the fact that many of us are huge fans of Klipsch's products, Why not publicly sell Cinema Speakers to the consumer? We are already make our own version of the Jubilees! There is a market. I figure from a company stand-point Klipsch's strategy these days is Best Buy and online retailers, since really that is where we all shop and if you don't, why don't you!? Kidding. What I would like to see is Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices next to the Cinema Lines. Why buy the home version when you can get the real deal? I know that at LEAST one (of us) will buy a set of MCMs with Cherry or Walnut finish.. Or at least exploit customers request and installation showing them that anything is possible. back tracking, sub question.. MCM Grand vs Palladium.. what do you think sounds better? Yeah I thought so. So the financial risk for a big company like Klipsch to produce custom or pro -level products to the consumer, especially in the insanity of the audio world, is one worth taking. Take a cue from the Muscle Car boom. What speakers did those hot rodders listen to in there garages and at their parties back in the day? Re-enforce carrying the product loyalism to another generation. When I look at the blog that some of the Klipsch employee's publish they pull up several years of advertising and products that promoted a true speaker company. My perception is the Heritage series, and the like, are really great examples of true High Fidelity. Klipsch continues to make great speakers that adapt with changing styles and tastes. Do Palladium's that are made today best the Klipschorn made MANY years ago? True statement, loudspeakers have not changed during those times. All still have a cone, voice coil, magnet, surround supported by a frame.. YA.. new materials, but same concept, compare to internal combustion (vehicle) engines- same concept new materials. This could go off on a tangent because it certainly debatable, but I'm talking about the testosterone of massive Cinema Speakers in our homes! Your thoughts?
  10. I'd ask Klipsch if they would be willing to give you the price sheet for the cinema series, and if you get it please share. -Bill
  11. depstein, I'm a speaker guy. 80% or higher will be spent on speakers if I had your wallet. Now, I am going straight to the point, name dropping and all. Get Klipsch RF-5s in dark cherry, Sonic Impact T-amp, Apple Airport Express. The justification is this: You have a computer (Source) and a wireless link from your source to your stereo is very convienent, has high sound quality (can feed to a Digital Reciver or any digital (optical in) equiped device) and integrates with one of the better Music Playing programs out there.. The T-Amp has been praised by the stalwarts of Hi-Fi and quite the bargan, it's an modestly powered integrated amp that will certainly power the RF-5 to loud levels. Finally the RF-5 is simply a classic in the making. Read the reviews, I think it sounds great! and It looks great! Super subjective, but you must give it a shot. -Bill
  12. I nominated this to be the Official Klipsch Heresey Thread! With so many versions of the Heresy into consumers hands, past down from owner to owner, and consistantly praised, its worth the effort to sustain the knowledge of these fine speakers. The concept is basic. Find a Heresy Cabinet and either pay some one to refurbish or hit up Bob Crites or Klipsch and roll your own. Less we forget the option to buy brand new as save the effort if you just want the quickest results. This thread needs part numbers and business to resource... -Bill
  13. small request, can you post pictures of your set-up and the DTS-10? For consumers size is always the issue, and as big as they are, K-horns slide into corners and really are out of the way. There is a need, and a place in today's market for them, and I am in awe that the design carries so well XX many years later. I spent a good deal of time reading about Tweak City Audio's and Seaton Sound's offerings.. Moreover, I think I have gone "the back nine" with all Top performing subwoofers, as far as research, reviews, user and anecdotal opinons. To complete my game or journey, I need pictures and most of all to listen to these. The solution is to track down users and "invite" myself over or find a get together where subs are being auditioned, to that extent its simply generating the ideas and searching the interweb and all it's many audio forums. -Bill
  14. Hi, I have the same AMP and since It started buzzing I top shelved it, just like a broken "Woody" w/ a torn arm. Since then I have yet to find a repair service or educate myself to take on the role of EEE. Are there recommended business that refurb/refreshes tube amps? I'd ship but the Northeast is the area I live in.. Thanks -Bill
  15. Whoa! That's a system with TEETH! The only thing that gets me is the sideways tower.. That would drive me nutz. That alone would justify buying a projector with an acoustically transparent screen, just so I could put it in the "stand up" position. -Bill
  16. HAHA! Yeah, I went right to the cinema section after I posted. I also admittinley own a pro-sound sub, it's a Cerwin Vega, AB-36C "Earthquake" Horn Loaded sub.. look it up @ www.cerwinvega.com. For music and for the most part.. movies, it will pressurize the room fairly well. It just doesn't get deep. It's also the size of a mini fridge and I just don't like it in my living room, and I'd really want a pair, it's just that I'm running out of space. -Bill
  17. I have looked at eD and I am just amazed at their products. They are even clever enough to Blog about all there gear. To top all that off they sell one MASSIVE subwoofer that has got the top spot on CraigsSub list. I am not sure of the link, but hit up avsforum or google it. (hey found it, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768150) I do believe the DTS-10, 20 or TH SPUD would be awesome, and that is great that they are starting to build commercial series.. It helps out with "consumers" like me who are either working or spending time with the family.. hehe that's stab at the rat race.. anyways back on topic. I'd like to make this thread more about choices, since there is never an absolute. I think to start it would be fair enough to start with Klipsch's own RT-12d and work all they way to A7-900 http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=606 The short list so far eD A7S-450 all the way to A7-900 JL Audio, F112, F113, F212, and G 213 Paradigm Signature Sub 25, Paradigm Servo 15 SVS PC/PB 13 Ultra Velodyne DD-15. DD-18, DD1812 Seaton Sound Submersive Epik Conquest, Dragon, Dynasty What else? -Bill
  18. I have read several posts on all the forums about Submersive. Unless Seaton Sound is at the level of SVS, HSU, and Outlaw Audio in terms of customer support and quality refinement then I won't take the risk. There is a reason that Paradigm and JL Audio go thru such great lenths to create what they've got. They use engineers, test facilities, and stratigic risk in their product development. They all have built in room correction and all the work is handled by the electronics that they worked so hard to produce. Honestly, do you think getting a Radioshack SPL meter, a BFD, Room EQ wizard, and all the associated interconnects will get you the same or better results than what most Subwoofer Companies produce? The Klipsch RT-12d, a compact, and good as it is, subwoofer, it's still bested by the JL Audio F112. Idealy, I want Klipsch to do one of two things build a massive horn-loaded subwoofer, like their Cinema Subs.. hey wait.. :-D or make an answer to JL, Velodyne, SVS, and Paradigm and slot the sub between the the P-312w and the RT-12d. Other comments: Tweak the Klipsch room EQ software so it looks better, Make a series design to support the Heritage Theme, and use sealed 15-18" Large Displacement (Xmax) woofers... -Bill
  19. As much as I followed the LAB horn project, the Danley Sub is what it is, a kit. If you have the time then, yes, get it and build it. I am the guy who wants the company to do all the hard work of testing and evaluation, knowing that there hard earned profits depend on producing results. Should Danely produce an internet direct sales with full support, and postive feedback follows, then it would be a worthy contender for all of us "consumers". so to not sound like a total nay-sayer.. Other than the Danley DTS and other "Do it yourself" ideas.. What else is out there? I unintentionally posted this thread, not realizing this sub forum was here. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/p/127347/1288287.aspx#1288287 but in that thread I feel that these are some of the top contenders in Internet Direct and Brick and Mortar Sales.. Your thoughts? -Bill
  20. Okay I will have a look. Also, I just realized that there is a subwoofer sub forum, could a moderator please move this thread, my fault. _Bill
  21. Okay, this should be fun. First I elected NOT to include Klipsch's own Subwoofers on the gounds that nothing BUT the P-312W ($4,000) is truly the the competition to those below. RT-12d and 10d just are not as powerful, still rock, just not top tier. AND as of now I did not find any reviews of it, therefore I have nothing but the product page to go by. Nor have I heard one. Look at the pictures, skip to Part II if you don't have the time.. and then come back and read all.. Today's audio market is full of excellent compitition as now technology is allowing the end user to calibrate the sound to reproduce the most accurate signal through all the gee-wizz tech of DSP (digital signal proccessing) and calibrated microphones. One simply buys the the sub, un packs it, wrestles it into position, plug it in, hits calibrate with the supplied mic, and you are ready for Bluy, PS3, music, etc.. With out messing around with an EQ (equalizer) or worrying that you put it the wrong spot, because stuff vibrates or booms at random frequencies.. ( I'll add you can really do much about sympathic resonace, i.e. picture fram rattle, other than dampen it) What I am saying is, the modern sub truely integrates itself into any home audio/theater system. I never knew what "brick and mortar" shops where untill I read abit about today's Audio market. There are two types, internet direct (ID) and Store/boutique bought (..Brick and Mortar..) The contention is that ID can sell you less expensive gear because they cut out the middle man of B&M shops. The draw-back is that you cannot hear these subwoofers and have to rely and trust in the mryaid of audio/hometheater forums, "gorrilla advertising" and end-user feedback.. add in that you never really can trust the internet. and what do you do for warranty claims? Turns out some of them are reputable and will rush replacements to your doorstep and solve all your worries.. What is even better is the stalwart audio magazines are reviewing them and giving them the thumbs up. Still, the lack of acually hearing them really is the main point.. side note: I never would have wanted a corvette untill I actually drove one, and holy cow that car is really amazing, and now I am telling myself I will own one some day .. That being said, here is my list of contenders. JL Audio F113 http://home.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?prod_id=371 Reviews: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/subwoofers-products-menu-column1-41/387-a-secrets-subwoofer-review.html http://www.stereophile.com/subwoofers/907jl/ http://www.ultimateavmag.com/subwoofers/807jlsub/ $3,700 Velodyne DD-18 http://www.velodyne.com/products/product.aspx?ID=4&sid=236e267x Reviews http://www.stereophile.com/subwoofers/604velodyne/index.html http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_10_4/velodyne-dd-18-subwoofer-12-2003-part-1.html $5,000 (MSRP) can be found for MUCH less or USED Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 25 http://www.paradigm.com/en/reference/subwoofer-signature-signaturesub25-model-5-17-4-20.paradigm Reviews: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/subwoofers-products-menu-column1-41/659-paradigm-reference-sub-25-powered-subwoofer-and-perfect-bass-kit-pbk-1-.html http://www.paradigm.com/en/pdf/reviews/subwoofers/signaturesub25_review_292.pdf MSRP: $3,999 USA Perfect Bass Kit (PBK-1) Room EQ Software MSRP: $299 USA $4,300 SVS-PC13 Ultra http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pcultra_new.cfm Reviews: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/subwoofers-products-menu-column1-41/215-a-secrets-subwoofer-review.html http://www.svsound.com/news-reviews-schwartz.cfm $1399 (I'd get two, so $2799) and Velodyne SMS-1 room correcting EQ ($399) $3200.. Okay so you saw the prices and you aready think I am more insane that I was before you started reading this email. Well, that's MSRP. You see the B&M retailers always cut you a deal. Even just looking on Ebay and Audiogon.com I found all of these subs for under $2500.. which is still outrageous. Put price aside, because I have learned that I'll pay anything if I know that I really want it. Look at the values of what each one has... or don't and I will tell you what they are.. Part II JL F113 smallest sub, plenty of bass. Velodyne, suposed the king of the hill since 2004, not huge but still big, super hi-tech, plenty of bass. Paradigm Sub 25 is Paradigms andswer to the JL Audio F113 and Velodyne DD-18, has the most power, best looks, and claims 9hz (really low) response, and plenty of bass. SVS PC-13ultra is the ID answer to all of these longstanding leaders in sub tech, not very high tech, largest of the group, however extremely (relatively) afordable, and has plenty of bass. These all have plenty of bass, and the ability to have room corrected values applied to the signal. What needs to be done now is find dealers to audition. but go ahead search the forums and the interweb and see if you can come up with anything.. Thanks, Bill
  22. Okay, so I am still on the fence. and this rendering (below) is where this thread has left me. But I speculate about this (below) set-up I do realize that my LaScalas really sound great! I keep them on LARGE under the Base Management, even though they don't play deep bass, AND my AV Receiver has a variable Bass Crossover. even though it's 2 channel, now, I have been using a sub (to which I am not so sure about). The limiting factor is that the Yamaha RV-X1900 cannot set a different Cross Over frequency for each channel. oh well. Anyways, 5 Heresies would be nice. look nice, sound great. Still after I "walked the dog" with this idea, turns out that going with 2 LaScalas (that already own) as L and R stereo, Heresy Center, and Heresy surround might be something to consider. I'm gonna start a new thread about subwoofers. _Bill
  23. Yeah, that's in my Hall of Fame home theaters. Just from reading around many users speculate $136k or more has been spent on this. When you have a passion and the resources there are no limits. :-) Back to reality of "what's in my wallet" From what I am observing on this forum, many are going with a smaller, 5 Heresy III setup. as an owner of LaScalas I will admit that though wonderful sounding their sheer size is something that we all have had to over-come. In today's market & technology, the Bass Managment of anything below 80hz would make anything larger than a Heresy, overkill. It's too easy to get a few Subwoofers to managae all the Low Frequency Effects, and tuck them away. Then have the flexibility to place the Heresies anywhere you want ( wall, floor, cabinet integrated, etc..) Your thoughts?
  24. Yes, thos subs sure do! I think that is a well balanced set up. Matching fronts, pair of subs, and a decent screen. Really is about the music and the movies and that set-up is of a true lover of both.. as opposed to a someone with a bottomless wallet i.e. B&W 800 series all around, and JL Audio Gotham Subs, Krell/Classe gear, Runco projectors w/ the scope lens and every accessory is sweated over.. http://www.blu-ray.com/community/gallery.php?member=Brain%20Sturgeon&folderid=282
