  1. Thanks TheEars! That is what I wanted to hear. I am fully expecting to be blown away by this new sub. I don't need as much bass as most - just solid clean bass all the way down to 20hz! I am not trying to raise the roof! I almost thought about getting two for that price, but I just don't think it will be necessary for what I am looking for. I heard the SPL1200 at the local dealer, and before I even knew which sub it was, I was asking which sub was pumping out that huge bass! Boy was I surprised when I noticed it was the SPL1200 - the one I had my eye on since I first saw it. I compared it to the HGS 12, and in this setup, the SPL1200 was louder. I don't know about cleaner, because it was U571, and we were testing the depth charge scenes. Hard to tell what a clean exlposion under water is supposed to sound like! However, it had that tight, punchy bass that my KSW lacked! I can't wait until this weekend! RWMIN - I will let you know how I like it! Bryan
  2. Thanks guys! I got authorization from the boss! I ordered it last night, and it should be here on Friday. For $750, I don't think I can go wrong. Of course an SVS would do favorably here, but in my setup, a large cylinder just won't work! I notice that the SPL1200 is close to the top of the TN list. That says a lot to me! I am anticipating a huge difference from the KSW 12 to the SPL 1200. The price difference alone indicates a big jump in class, so the performance should be exactly what I am looking for. I can't wait! Bryan
  3. I am looking at the Velodyne SPL1200 sub. I am wondering if anyone here can post any of their thoughts on this sub. Is there a huge difference between the SPL 1200 and HGS 12? (What about the FSR12?) Or is it more subtle? I have found the SPL 1200 online for $750 (B Stock Factory Refurbished) at onecall.com. Does this seem like a good deal? It does to me. It doesn't really bother me to buy a factory refurbished item, as long as it has the same warranty. I was going to call them and make sure everything is on the up and up, and find out what their definition of B-Stock is. I don't want scratch and dent! Can anyone comment on the sub itself, any experiences with onecall, and buying B-Stock items? All info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bryan P.S. I have been patiently waiting for the RSW12, but it is taking so long, and the price on this sub is about half! Plus, I just don't think an active rear firing driver will work in my set up. I have the sub in a media niche, and I want to keep it there! A front firing sealed sub will work better for me, and the SPL 1200 has documented tests to show it's a great performer! 4. I think I need to chime in here. I have the KSW 12, and while a great sub for the price, I am definitely going to upgrade it. Either to an SPL1200 or an RSW12. (But also looking at the Hsu VTF-2) The list is great, but you have to read everything on the list to get the whole picture. The list is ordered by average output, so the KSW 12 places in the middle of the pack (100 db average). You have to also look at the other numbers, though, namely the extension (lowest frequency) and its output at that frequency. The KSW 12 does 90 db at 25Hz, and 70db at 20Hz. But look up a little on the list and you see the CT120 (I know you are looking at the 10, but its not on the list). Its average output is only slightly more than the KSW 12 (1 db) but its 20 Hz output is 17db louder! That is a huge difference. You would need like 8 KSW 12's to match it at that frequency. What you can't see from the list (you have to read the review) is that the maximum output of the KSW 12 is at something like 62Hz - so the average is pulled up at the higher bass frequencies. So the 100 db average is not the same between different subs. I would say to try and listen to them both, doing a comparison, and seeing which one you like the sound of. It could be that the smaller woofer (the 10) has better bass quality and deeper extension, or maybe not. But it depends on what you like. Remember that the Hsu VTF-2 is like $500, and whips both of these subs with only a 10" woofer. It is closer to the top of the list, and plays with the big boys. My point - the list is great - but you have to look at the whole list, and secondly, use the list to narrow it down, but listen to the ones you want buy, and do the comparison there. 5. Tom - I have the 3802 - and I don't have to swap the leads to get mine to play at ear bleed levels. It could be any one of the following: 1) Your receiver is wired internally wrong. Maybe they had a new employee hook it up on the day yours left the manufacturer. Have you tried taking the receiver back and getting a new one? That's what dealers are for! Maybe there is some weird short in the receiver itself. 2) Your rear speakers are wired internally incorrectly. Have you tried hooking up your front speakers to the rears and seeing if it still shuts down? Have you tried it with only the surrounds in and see if it shuts down? Just try and figure out what combination it is that causes it. 3) Have you tried running a new set of cables to the surrounds - to make sure your current cables aren't shorted out somewhere? Maybe there is a short somewhere in the system, and wiring out of phase allows the Denon to handle it. I remember someone having a problem where it turned out they had nailed a nail into their in wall speaker cable - causing a short, and their receiver to shut off like yours. You shouldn't have to live with wiring your speakers out of phase - because now they are out of phase with your front speakers. DaveC, I bet you had a stray wire, and it was causing a short. My friend has a Denon 1801, and it was doing the same thing. I told him to check his connections, and sure enough, there was two wires crossing, causing a short that only had a problem at high volumes. Almost always it is a short that causes these things to happen. Bryan ------------------ "... 6. belial - thanks! I haven't had a chance to really tweak it yet, since I have a 9 month old son, and I have to wait until him and mom are gone to play, so I don't know how the sub will sound in there. But so far, it sounds better than where it was before. There is about 15 inches behind the sub port to the back wall - so it has plenty of room to breathe behind it. Also, the niche has a large 4 inch hole in the back top (behind the compononents) to let the sub vent, and where I can put a fan to vent out the compononent area. Above the components are two 4 inch holes (behind the right speakers) that allow all of the heat to rise out. The same for the TV, it has two of these 4 inch holes to let heat rise out. We used some PVC pipe, cut to fit, and they are finished perfectly. It was a well done job. I actually want to upgrade my sub to either a Velodyne SPL1200 (which would fit perfectly there) or an RSW 12 - but I am concerned about the rear firing driver in that niche - it may not be enough room to let it breathe. Or it could really enhance the bass - it is more than corner loaded! The other option is to get an SVS and put it in the back corner behind the couch (where the tree is right now). My wife isn't thrilled about that though, as she likes her tree there! Colin - the speakers put plenty of sound into the kitchen! No need for any more! A few things need to be done - hanging the pictures back on the walls after painting, adding shelves and a smoked glass door to the components area, and some little trim work, backlighting in the top 3 niches, and some uplighting on top of the media niche. You can actually see the exposed wires waiting for the fixtures on the top. Adding some dimmer switches and I should be all set! Bryan
  7. Here are my home theater pics. Let me know what you think. We just had the custom media niche built. I designed it, and my father-in-law's construction company built it. The kitchen is to the left of the seating position (I am standing in the kitchen taking the shot of the seating position). It's hard to tell, but the ceilings are 11 feet tall, and my TV is a 60" TV. The pics make it all look smaller than it really is. Enjoy! Bryan ------------------ "... 8. Thanks Doug - I can't make it today anyway - gotta work ya know! So I can buy more stuff! RossV - yeah - I hate that "other" place - I have gone in there a few times when I was "desperate" to look at something, only to not be able to find a sales person to help me, or to be grilled to death on buying an extended warranty on anything I purchased there. I say no thank you, and they say - why not? When I tell them my answer - they just shut up. I say, "all this extended warranty is, is more money for you guys, it doesn't help me at all. If they say anything after that I say, then I guess I shouldn't buy this piece of crap because apparantly it is going to break, necessitating the need for an additional warranty on top of the manufacturers warranty. Is that what you are trying to tell me?" They usually shut up. Bryan
  9. RossV - yes - Showcase. That is where I bought all of my stuff from. I go to the Chandler store. They have one down the street from where I work in Scottsdale, and they just opened one up at Arrowhead mall - closer to your side of town. They have some killer stuff at Showcase! I love that store. The service is excellent (although you pay for it) - I got to trade in my 3801 for the 3802 after six months - no charges - because my 3801 was having issues with the S-Video out - you can't beat that kind of service! DD - where in Scottsdale? Which resort - I work in Scottsdale - maybe I could stop by! Bryan
  10. Count me as another one who has their satellite going the the HT system. My HT system gets most of its use watching TV. I would say 80% of it is watching TV during the week. We rent a movie or two on the weekend, and listen to a little music in between. It add's a lot to some TV shows, more so than you would think. And since my receiver has DPLII, it is even better! 11. Update: I went to Home Depot and got one of their spray cans - you attach a small glass jar (that comes with it) to the bottom, with your paint in it. You can then spray the paint. I then used floss and tooth picks to hold the grills up in mid-air while I "dusted" them with the paint. They turned out perfectly. Thought I would share this as a tip for anyone else needing to paint their in-wall speakers. I will post some pics here in a few days. Bryan
  12. Thanks - I actually fixed them today. I soaked the one grill in water, and the latex paint basically came right off. The frame wasn't bad, so I didn't have to do anything with that. All I did for the grills was use a small roller, and rolled the paint on in thin layers until I got the color I wanted. It worked really well. Thanks for the info though, BobG! Bryan
  13. Are you sure it isn't something buzzing in your room? Maybe a picture on the wall? Try walking around the room (if you haven't) and see if the buzz is definitely coming from the sub. Just a thought. Bryan
  14. I called my local dealer last week. They said they should have them in a week to a couple of weeks. We'll see. It sounded like they had already been shipped and they were just waiting for them to come in. Bryan
  15. Hi all, been doing some painting this weekend. Very fun! Not! Ok, anyway, I have painted the wall where my RCW3 in-wall speakers are. I tried painting one of the speaker grills and the plastic frame, and let's just say I am not happy with the results! I am going to have someone airbrush the paint on (I think), but I have already ruined one set of the speaker mounts. The speaker itself is fine. My question is two-fold - what is the best way to paint these, so that the grill doesn't get the holes clogged up with paint, and there are no brush marks on the plastic mounting frame? Second, to the Klipsch mods - can I order just the grill and frame, and what is the cost (including shipping) and how long will it take to get here? Should I just go to my local dealer and see if they have any in stock? Thanks for any info. Bryan
  16. Oogins - what do yo mean by a lack of an A/B switch? It looks to me like the 3802 has one - it is a second zone. You can use the two extra channels and play a second set of speakers at a different volume on a different (or the same) source. I don't think the 3802 would kill your speakers. It may be overkill for now, but what if you decide to upgrade your speakers? The 3802 could be your receiver for a while. Just some thoughts. Bryan
  17. OK guys - I just want to ask a question about placing a sub in the back of the room. Here is my layout: I have a big sectional couch, that has one part along the side wall (to my right while sitting and facing the TV). The couch then curves around along the back wall, and when I am sitting watching TV, I am right against the back wall. Now where I was thinking about putting an SVS sub is in the corner of the right and back wall, behind the curved part of the sectional couch. This would place the sub directly to the right of me (when seated in the viewing location), about 6 feet away, corner loaded, but also surrounded by the couch. Couple of questions about this. First, how will the sub sound at the back of the room? The back wall is about 12 feet from the front of the front speakers. The surround speakers are in wall speakers, mounted on the back wall. In fact, the right surround would be pretty much directly above the sub. I would run the sub with a XOver at 80Hz. Am I going to be able to localize the sub in the back of the room? Also, am I gonna have to play with the phase control to get the sub in phase with the front speakers? I had heard that placing a sub in the back of the room can cause timing issues that cause confusion in the brain which can result in fatigue? That is my main concern with putting a sub at the back corner of the room. Also, if I set it in phase with the front speakers - will it be out of phase with the rear speakers? Second, how will the sub sound being surrounded on all sides? The port on the SVS would be above the back of the couch, and there would be several inches (probably 6" or more) between the SVS and the couch, but I am wondering if the couch will make it boomy, have no effect, or muffle the sound in any way. Also, one last question. My room is actually large, but I don't care about half of it. What I mean by this is, I know that if the entire room were the theater, and I wanted to fill it ALL with bass, I would need several subs. But all I care about is the part I am sitting in having bass. The other part is basically the kitchen and breakfast nook. It is a large "great" room where the family room, kitchen, and breakfast nook are one large room. If I am close enough to the sub (so I guess this is called nearfield listening) (about 6 feet away) is this size of a room going to kill the bass where I am sitting, or actually help get rid of nulls and peaks? The size of the room is probably something like 36 feet wide, by about 14 feet deep and 11 feet tall (flat celing - not cathedral - so it is 11 feet tall from edge to edge in the entire room). The part I sit in and want the bass in is about 18 feet wide, 14 feet deep and 11 feet tall. I have a KSW 12 now, and it is about 7 feet away (on the right wall, but at the end of the couch) and it provides some good bass in my listening position. I am considering a single PC (or CS) 20-39 SVS. I am assuming if I almost like the bass from one KSW 12, then one 20-39 should make me a very happy man. I am looking for quick, tight, deep bass that is musical. I don't like the boominess of the KSW 12. The other options I have are to get an SPL1200, or an RSW12 (if it lives up to the hype) and place it where the KSW 12 is. Thanks guys! Bryan ------------------ "... 18. Thanks - that's what I needed to see. I can use it to show my wife! "What a bargain - I only have to buy one of these new subs, otherwise I will have to buy about 7 more of the KSW 12 subs to get the same performance!" I am interested to see how the RSW12 stacks up, especially against the SPL1200 and 20-39PC. I would love to keep my system all Klipsch, but it is performance that matters. Bryan
  19. I don't think your stupid or wasting your money. If I could do it for only $50 - I would do it. There may not be any audible differences, but it would make you feel a lot better knowing they are all identically designed and built. I know for me that it would make a difference whether audible or not. Bryan
  20. TV, Would a single 20-39 PC be considered a night and day improvement over a KSW 12? Just wondering how big the difference is on this one as well. I am also looking into the RSW12 and the Velodyne SPL1200. Wondering if the difference is night and day there, too, vs the KSW 12. Thanks, Bryan
  21. OK - as promised an update. I got the cables in today. I hooked them up - and no thump when I turn the ceiling fan off. So it appears that it was just a defective cable! Thanks for all the input, as it was educational! Bryan
  22. Myram, It is very interesting to hear that story! Over at HTF, there is a whole bunch of hoopla over this. People claiming their Marantz kicks ***. But almost all of them have a different receiver than the 7200! Their recievers could very well kick ***. I wonder if either the 7200 is really just a POS, or has a manufacturing defect that they will have to recall and fix. Or maybe it is just a really bad QC issue, and several make it out the door like this. I have heard several people say the same thing as your friend, which leads me to believe the S&V article is pretty accurate. Maybe some people just haven't heard the clean sound of a Denon, and like that "warm" (aka distorted, under-powered, noisy sound) of the Marantz. Just kidding! Whatever happened with that Onkyo 696 issue in S&V? Was it a lemon - or is it really that under powered? Bryan
  23. I would wait and see what the response is from Marantz and S&V. It is very possible that the receiver was a lemon, and isn't representative of the actual receiver. It sounds very unlike Marantz. What is also weird is that it had a lot of power in two channel mode. It almost sounds like one of the amps was bad in the other channels. As far as the noise, that could also just be something bad causing it. I know there is a lot of hoopla over this at the forum (heck I have posted about it over there). What irks me is the poeple mad at S&V for posting their findings, and these are the same people who complain about the magazines being soft on manufacturers. But if it is their beloved brand they go crazy! I myself am a Denon man, and would recommend Denon highly. However, I would urge you to see if you could afford the 3802. I have it, and it is one superb receiver for the price. The 2802 isn't bad, but the 3802 shares a lot more in common with the 4802 and 5800 (DDSC and 7 channels of power built in). 24. Well, I have a very similar setup, so I wil chime in here. I currently have a Denon 3802, RB5 mains, RC3 center and RCW3 for the surrounds. The surrounds are in wall reference series speakers with a 6" woofer and a smaller horn tweeter that can be aimed left and right. These aren't the round in-ceiling speakers, but the normal rectangular ones where the woofer is on the bottom and the horn is on the top. I have it all paired with a KSW 12 sub. First, I have no concerns about the RC3 as a center channel speaker. Sure the RB5 would be the "perfect" match, but it still would sound slightly different because it is placed higher and in a different spot. As far as the bass is concerned, I set all of my speakers to small, crossed over at 80Hz, so the extra bass doesn't really matter from the RB5 vs the RC3. Also, the RC3 is designed specifically to be a center channel and placed up high on a TV. It even includes a handy nut and bolt to angle it down toward the listening area. The RB5 would have to be shimmed to angle the horn down, and may look funny sitting on top of the TV. As for the surrounds - I wanted direct radiating - I prefer them for music, and actually like them for movies, too. The way I look at it is this, do I really want my speakers "changing" the sound to be more diffuse? It may sound cool, but IMO it is not accurate. If they want it to come from the left rear, then I want it to come from there, not just somewhere in that direction. I know a lot of people like the diffuse sound, so it is really a matter of personal taste (and the room). I went with in-walls for the look, and the sound is pretty good! On pink noise pans, they pan around the room and you can't hear the hand off between the speakers - they seamlessly blend together. The receiver - all I can say is wow! I have heard that the Outlaw is pretty good, but it still isn't a Denon! IMO, Denon knows receivers, and they make them very well. It has basically all decoding formats, plenty of inputs, and incredible sound and power. So I would suggest looking very hard at the 3802, get the RB5's for the mains, an RC3 for the center, and whatever you feel comfortable with for the surrounds. RS3, RB5 (or even RB3), RCW5, RCW3 - it's up to you. You won't be dissapointed with whichever you choose, as long as it is right for you. I just can't see spending the extra money for a center speaker that isn't designed to be a center speaker and is basically only sold in pairs. Now if you were to get 3 pairs of RB5 (L+R, C, SL+SR, SB), you would have a perfectly matched system, but for about $2400 MSRP. Also, I have read that the rear center should actually be two back speakers (7.1) instead of just 1 (6.1). This is to spread the mono rear center signal out across the back of the room. Hope this helps. Bryan ------------------ "...
